One of the great things about these shows is that Mark is always portraying Citizen Joe Blow with all his/our hangups and misgivings and biases and prejudices, making the stories more realistic. His humanness is a good balance against Jonathan's mild manners and easy acceptance of things that we all try to dodge. Great show and study. We all need to learn from these.

I have stayed in a mental hospital for a week before. People can be there for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes it's because of depression, sometimes because of the loss of a spouse or a child, sometimes it's because of a significant trauma. Not everyone who is there has schizophrenia or multiple personalities or something like that. There shouldn't be this much stigma behind having a mental health diagnosis.

Do they even call it a "mental hospital" today? I know by even the 90s, terms like "mental hostipal", "nuthouse", "loony bin", "funny farm", were really frowned on and not used as much as say in 1983, 1985.

I noticed that also. Need a wheelchair, here is your independence and all the understanding and support and help you need. But have PTSD or some other mental issue and your just a useless nothing that wastes peoples time. I felt that when I asked for help too :( I was naive and assumed people WANTED to support and understand, but not true. People just wanted to judge and criticize and make fun of me. These people were "professionals". They reiterated what my family has taught me. I'm alone.

You wouldn't believe how people treated me. Sometimes as if I somehow 'made it all up' that I cold barely see 2 yards in front of me, had anxiety issues because I couldn't recognize faces anymore. People treated me like defective crap and my years of service counted for absolutely nothing. I know where you're coming from and I wish you all the best my friend.

Here in the UK, the government encourages people to be alone, so much so that they actively split married couples up. They "encourage" (for that read: force) people to split up, to divorce, they idealize separation. I know that because each time I tried to talk to someone about wanting to find a husband, I got told "stay single", "worry about your career", "enjoy being single", "just think, if you are single you can do what you want" and even "stay single so you can have it off with anyone"! On the rare occasions I liked someone, I got told "he's abusive/a scammer/a bad guy" (even when the people saying so couldn't possibly know because they had never met the men in question), "don't trust anyone", and by the men that I met I got told "you are not good enough", "who wants someone like you", "you are the wrong nationality/skin color/religion/your job isn't good enough", "my ex was better than you", and I even got chased away and threatened to stay away. The government also doesn't recognize marriage any more, married couples get recorded as "living with partner" as if they were of low morals and living in sin. The words "husband" and "wife" are illegal, spouses only ever get referred to as "partners". Single motherhood is heavily encouraged with attractive welfare benefits payments for single mothers - but married couples get penalized to such an extend that many unemployed couples cannot afford to live together on welfare and see no other option than to split up. The government also idealizes adultery, I have heard from numerous married people that they get told "your partner will cheat on you" by their doctors, and they themselves get assumed to be having it off all over the place by their doctors. And I have experienced it numerous times that I got berated by nurses for not being promiscuous, told that I'm "not normal" because I'm not promiscuous, I have been told by lawyers that I am "gullible, trusting and naive" because I still live in hope that one day I will find someone and get married and because I have no intention of cheating on whoever my husband will be, I have been laughed at for believing that true love exists and everywhere the message is now "loving someone is a mental illness called co-dependency". I continuously get mocked, scammed and abused by men who pretend to be romantically interested in me, only to wait until I develop feelings for them and to then throw me away whilst laughing at me, mocking me and chasing me away, all the while making it very clear that in their opinion I am so "gullible" for having believed that they were who they said they were (even though I didn't necessarily believe that they had feelings for me). Here in the UK, living alone and being single is considered ideal, it's encouraged and promoted.

Theres nothing wrong with those people that acceptance and friendliness wont heal. They just had some bad times that they couldnt cope with and now theyre getting ready to go back to a normal life. It wont hurt to give them a hand and speed up the process. That guy with the attitude is the one that should move. Another great story from Michael. Mmmm, hamburgers and potato salad ! Sounds real good. Reminds me of those Sunday picnics they used to have in Little House.

37:42 Now THIS is an example of why you shouldn't play with fire or with any type of fire-producing items (matches, lighters, wicks, etc.). It is extremely dangerous. It takes just one spark and, poof, your home is gone forever. Everything in it, up in flames. It can even cost you your life.

These people didn't suffer from mental issues as much as PTSD. Emotional/psychological trauma (the woman's daughter dying) causes a different type of "mental problem" than the ones people commonly think about. Most of the mental issues have genetic causes, but if something traumatizing happens in your life, and you develop depression or other "mental issues" it's different. Learning how to cope with the trauma in that person life, will help ease the symptoms. Coping through counseling, social groups, support groups etc, is more effective for those people than medication. Because an emotional extreme is the cause, not a chemical imbalance so emotional treatments have more success. It just makes sense. Although chemical imbalance caused mental issue people can benefit from the same thing as PTSD mental issue people.... PTSD people rarely benefit from meds long term.

IT'S OBVIOUS YOUR NOT A STATE LICENSED PSYCHOLOGIST AND YOU DON'T HAVE NO RIGHT TO JUDGE OTHERS ONLY GOD JUST REMEMBER THIS THAT IT'S PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT SPREAD YOUR POISONOUS GOSSIP ON-LINE THAT WILL DESTROY YOUR VICTIM MENTALLY OR EVEN WORSE CAN LEAD TO SUICIDE EVEN THOUGH YOUR OPINION MAY GIVE YOURSELF A VERY FALSE SENSE OF AUTHORITY BUT YOUR OPINION RUINS YOUR CREDITABILITY AND IT RUINS YOUR REPUTATION AND YOUR VICTIM MENTALLY OR WORSE BACK-OFF AND LEAVE OTHERS ALONE

It's cool this is a second episode that they showcased He Man toys . Brings back lots of memories. By the way that other kid playing with the pyromaniac is a young Brian Austin Green from Beverly hills 90210...

It's ironic how we abuse them so badlyv and then we treat them like they are dangerous most are actually the most harmless people in the world and if they do become dangerous it's probably because of the way we treat them would you blame a slave for beating up on their master

I have asked for help but have not gotten what I need to help me heal. I need unending encouragment & love. People have made promises to help but they broke that promise. I don't believe or trust anymore because of the broken promises. When you give your word to do something you should do it. If you are really to busy to help don't tell me you will help & then never give me that help. The let downs have made me very afraid of everything including life.

Hi Star Meadows! I don't understand your situation, but I do care. There's someone else who not only cares but understands your situation perfectly and that is God. He sent his son Jesus Christ to die on a cross for the sins of humanity (yes, that includes you too) and rose three days later. Pray to God, ask him to help you and be patient. God's timing isn't like ours, but it's always perfect. God may not always give you want you want but he always gives you want you need. Don't give up. God loves you like crazy.
