@@Chapadaria Like Britain, Portugal has lost its colonies, and today it is nothing compared to India. Even India's GDP is about close to $3 trillion and will increase, than a pathetic $237 billion GDP of Portugal, and expected to go lower in the coming years. Basically, today you will have to deal with shitholes in your neighborhoods from Islamic nations close to your borders from the south. You even lost Macau to China. While India produces a variety of products in innumerable fields, the best Portugal could produce was Ronaldo (good man, I am sure, but that is all). Nothing more. In the next 50 years. Portugal will be a limited in its influence, while India now and then, will be making and gaining influence with some big players. I understand it is very hard for you to comprehend these short facts, but its the sad truth. Portugal is finished.

@bat wayne There have been 9 mass migrations of Kashmiri Pandits from Kashmir since the dawn of Indian civilization. One of these mass migrations in the 1600's played a significant role in the eventual militarization of a community founded by Guru Nanak and profoundly affected the development of a major world religion and its ethos. Kashmir is a valley that was originally an alpine lake with the name of Satisar. Many central asians and so called Kashmiris of Persian and Turkic origin have no knowledge of Kashmir's history prior to 1000 AD, the start to their ugly invasions and profoundly vile occupation. Names like Gillani, Hamdani, Bukhari, Jeelani and Zargar are non-Kashmiri names, and these names are themselves a testament to their place of origin (outside of Kashmir). Many of those claiming 'India' as the occupier are themselves occupiers and non-Kashmiris. The memory and the bond created between Kashmir and Bharat is ancient, civilizational, irrevocable, and ultimately, unbreakable.

Remember Sri Lanka and the USSR supported India at the United Nations General Assembly while other countries, including Portugal, the US and the UK were against India. My great granduncle Prof. Gunapala Malalasekera was the ambassador to the United Nations representing the Dominion of Ceylon(now Sri Lanka) then. *[EDIT]* 16.11.2023- I noticed that I've typed it as "Sri Lanka and Russia". @@FalconAviationChannel that’s funny. Europeans lived in the Stone Age longer than any other group of people on Earth. The Chinese, Indians and Middle Easterners all independently discovered agriculture and independently created the first civilizations while Europeans were still living as Hunter Gatherers in caves and jungles, a Stone Age existence. What’s more, India and China were the richest economies in the world for thousands of years, when Portugal was a mere backwater of Europe, which was a backwater itself at the time, full of poverty and starving, illiterate peasants without adequate food and clean water. It was only the colonial loot of Asia and the New World that, combined with the imperialism of the British and French and their subsequent developments of the Industrial revolution (thanks largely to Science and technology from China, India, the Middle East and elsewhere) that Portugal and the rest of Europe even became relevant and richer than they used to be. You are only relatively prosperous because of loot and thievery, don’t be so proud of something so shameful. Your ignorance and prose speak volumes about your intelligence and character.

As an American, I am amused at why are Indians and Portuguese fighting on KZbin? This happened 50 years go, right? It was all very simple. India picked up its sword, Portuguese troops in Goa cried and begged not to die, India agreed and shipped most of them back to Portugal unharmed. Then the Portuguese fascist government under the dictator Salazar was discredited and severely weakened only to completely collapse a decade later. So, Portuguese you should be grateful to India. They helped you defeat your own corrupt brutal dictator Salazar who came to realize that India is one country he cannot bully.

My father knew this intellectual giant. Few like him in our planet. Even if one ignores his excellent English and focuses on what he mentions one is totally amazed. Today India is surely the third strongest military power after Russia and the USA mainly due to the founding fathers of modern India. They were extremely intelligent, highly educated, absolutely honest and had no materialistic greed in them, and were also great nationalists. People such as them and Mr. Kaul were feared by our enemies. Sadly most of the establishment in India today is led by uneducated people thus they are loved by our enemies. Our enemies can do no harm to India since we are militarily very powerful and even these uneducated leaders fortunately are nationalists.

>the reason Portugal did not invoke Article 5 of the NATO Treaty (the article about collective defense) is because it could not, per Article 6 Just to add some detail, because this makes it sound like a very clear cut legal point. The real situation was murkier. India opened its diplomatic mission in Portugal in 1948, the year after independence, and since that time had been negotiating with Portugal to end their colonial rule of Goa. Portugal absolutely refused to discuss the issue, claiming that Goa/Daman/Dadra/Nagar Haveli were integral parts of Portugal. In July 1950, the Portuguese Government sent a formal notice to India, saying that the question of independence "could not be discussed," and any Indian proposals for independence or autonomy were not negotiable. India persisted, and sent several more petitions to the Portuguese government asking to open negotiations on the subject of Portugal's colonies on the Indian subcontinent. In 1953, they sent a detailed *aide memoire* assuring the Portuguese that if they gave up their colony, India would maintain the rights, culture, language and customs of the Goan people and make absolutely no changes, except through their consent. The Portuguese government did not respond, and from that point on began ignoring all Indian diplomatic communications. The Indian mission chief tried several times to get appointments to speak with his counterparts in Lisbon, but he was refused. Eventually, India decided that its Portuguese mission was doing no good, since they weren't allowed to talk to any Portuguese officials, and closed down the mission in June 1953. Diplomatic relations did not resume until 20 years later. When diplomatic communications with Portugal failed, India began raising the Goan issue at the UN, which was more or less in favor of decolonization. This raised concern in Portugal, which began to lobby its own allies (mainly NATO) for support. While what you say about Goa not being under the purview of Article 5 is correct, this did not stop Portugal from raising the issue at NATO. In 1951, they explicitly amended their constitution to name their Indian colonies as integral overseas parts of Portugal. They continued to lobby the US, UK and France to support their position. It was actually the UK that put its foot down on the NATO issue, when their Foreign Secretary Douglas-Home explicitly told the Portuguese government that the Indian colonies were not a NATO issue, and they should not expect any help from the UK. The US was more ambiguous. While their stated policy was in favor of decolonization, **not once did the US ever suggest independence or self-determination for Goa**. In practice, their policy was "decolonization, but not for Goa". Not because they cared about Goa, but because that would put Portugal's two big colonies (Angola and Mozambique) at risk of demanding independence too, and that would hurt US-Portuguese relations, and therefore NATO. Since they couldn't afford to antagonize Portugal, the US put diplomatic pressure on India to "settle the matter peacefully and through consensus", and not resort to fighting. The Indian government responded by saying that they had been looking for a peaceful solution ever since they opened diplomatic relations with Portugal in 1948, but Portugal was unwilling to even discuss the issue. How can you negotiate with someone who ignores all written communications, refuses to talk to your diplomatic personnel? Nehru told US ambassador John Galbraith that if the US was really serious about a "peaceful solution", could they at least ask Portugal to talk to India. The reason this became urgent was because of what happened to Dadra and Nagar Haveli, two (much smaller) Portuguese colonies in India. These were tiny enclaves, where local *satyagrahis* launched a violent protest and drove Portuguese officers out. India promptly banned visas for Portuguese travel between their colonies, so Portugal was unable to reinforce them with troops from Goa. This incident told other countries that India was serious about removing the Portuguese presence, and more importantly, it gave new heart to the Goan independence movements. Mass protests against the Portuguese (which had diminished in the early 50's) were reinvigorated, and there were many protests in Goa in which thousands of people marched for independence. This made the Portuguese even more nervous, which caused them to react violently. There were a few cases where Portuguese troops opened fire on the protestors, killing dozens. One particular incident was witnessed by international journalists, which also swayed international opinion against Portugal. Meanwhile, India had built its own lobby at the UN, mostly with other former colonies, insisting that Portugal leave Goa. In the aftermath, there was a lot of recrimination, mostly from the US, which demanded that Indian troops should immediately leave Goa unconditionally. As you say, they tried to get military support to enforce this at the UN Security Council, but that was vetoed by the USSR.

Great to see India has maintained a firm stance ever since Independece. I have heard, even Mountbatten tried to intervene in many issues regarding India during 1971 war , but our leaders and diplomats didnt fall for it. Such strong diplomatic foundation, can be seen to this day when our external minister makes bold statement to european journalists . God bless our nation and may we keep striving and achieve greater heights. Jai Hind.

It were two different times, besides Goa is inside the Indian Union and East Timor is an island that had a guerrilla movement for self determination. Most of the goans that wanted portuguese rule went to Mozambique and Portugal, the majority, I believe, wanted to be part of the Indian Union

The English language spoken in an elegant and eloquent way by Mr Kaul The reporter had nothing to say and was fumbling because of the hard hitting realisation of facts
@tk-6967 Жыл бұрын
Because British reporters are supposed to be impartial and only ask the pertinent questions. The BBC continues to be impartial by today's standards, but in the past British reporting was even more impartial, with impartiality only broken by the US government influencing Britain and telling them what to say.

And even if they expressed to be independent its only because they are in democracy under India. Also if they wanted same in 1961 Salazar would not have set even an armistice India had appealed several times to Portugal. So Cohen all your arguments are indeed a farce. If you know the freedom movement was itself started by a Goan Catholic also most of my friends don't even speak Portuguese from last generation all speak Eng or Konkani and call themselves as Goenkar not Portuguese you yourself seem to have undue into in slapping you unnecessary opinions.Also note that Pork Vindaloo is not the fav dish in Mumbai not more than 1 percent ppl in Mumbai eat pork

If it is so democratic, make a referêndum asking that. India doesn't do that because she knows the yes would win...More than that is just bla bla bla...
@akshayaptegastronomique10 жыл бұрын
Cohen Sommer Its not we you are asking about a referendem, I dont understand why? What is your role in Goa? Also Portugal offered dual citizenship for all born before 1961, so those who chose portugal had a choice to make, if they made a choice to stay in India, thats it why do anybody take a referendum, because some stupid in portugal wants it?? Any way who cares about that ?Secondly if that is the case the Goenkars will boycott indian elections and choose something else. However they continue to vote infact at a staggering 70 plus percentage and choose their own govt. Its better that some of the Goans who feel such should express it to their representatives than conveying it to some body to put it on youtube. Whatever you say is correct and others are blah blah.... How? Again that colonial ego ( now powerless) comes rather than rational mind. And talking about China and Macau, Macau was rented to Portugal by the Chinese empire as a trading port. The Portuguese administered the city under Chinese authority and sovereignty until 1887, when Macau became a colony of the Portuguese empire. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred back to China on 20 December 1999. The Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Macau stipulate that Macau operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer.[ There is a lot of difference between renting a province and Forcefully occupying and killing people and looting resources. Secondly if you people would have created filth , the chinese would have fried your assess and eaten you alive, like you did in Goa to convert people in the name of Inquisition, you will find several documents to aid the fact.( IT is not an accusation). Also if you read history further, Following the Opium War (1839-42), Portugal occupied Taipa and Coloane in 1851 and 1864 respectively. On 1 December 1887, the Qing and Portuguese governments signed the Sino-Portuguese Treaty of Amity and Commerce, under which China ceded the right of "perpetual occupation and government of Macau by Portugal" in compliance with the statements of the Protocol of Lisbon. In return, Macau Government would cooperate with Hong Kong's smuggle of Indian opium and China would be able to increase profits through customs taxes. Portugal was also obliged "never to alienate Macau without previous agreement with China", therefore ensuring that negotiation between Portugal and France (regarding a possible exchange of Macau and Portuguese Guinea with the French Congo) or with other countries would not go forward - so that the British commercial interests would be secured; Macau officially became a territory under Portuguese administration.[19] So there was a treaty, In India when the admin asked Portugese to vacate Goa like other powers, it blatantly refused, why didnt it talk about any such treaty then. Simply beacause none of the earlier powers in India never overwhelmed them. And they thought that India will never have power to fight portugese. They never realised times have changed and so does technology, the same thing hitler thought and napolean thought that they will create ruckus and nobody will give them back. But even every dog has its day so every Country will also have it. Regarding the Colonial war you said Russia, America, Cuba offered help to African colonies to defeat Portugese. Why will your so called good relationship with them not come in between. Or you mean that the Empire was just holding on too long in the tooth.Nobody likes being ruled by others that is it. With Goa freed, all the colonies got a glimmer of hope and thats why they got help. Macau is just an admin region and so is Hongkong. On that note Dubai has come up as a centre in just 30 years and most of the nation building in UAE and gulf is done by Indians and managed by Indians, and off course there are multitude of Goans there within the Indians. So it doesnt mean that only portugal admin will do great for the world. Was US ever ruled by Portugese? to that matter What crap you give Anyway the your argument is dead long ago RIP PIIGS

Finally, do not get mad lad, but Indian was burried untill the neck to shit and in less than a decade, when everyone thought that you would actually start to get better, you've just entered in the "Emerging Markets Crisis". You're bancruped before you're even rich. It's patethic, so don't bother to mention the PIIGS because as always even Greece will fare well better than your filthy poor country
