1) the rule in itself is ambiguous (what is a double violation? Per day? Event?) 2) it's not enforced equally. @Viewer1312824 күн бұрын
Note though that Magnus didn't create it. In fact Magnus was even about to say the only way he'd return is "if..." before he stopped and decided not to "demand" stuff from FIDE. Basically FIDE went all out against their reigning champ for jeans that affects no other players and is near irrelevant once seated. Magnus apologized and said he would change his jeans the next day, but FIDE's failed discretion went all out and banned Magnus from a game, basically forcing him out of the tournament at that point cause how can you even compete anymore. I think Magnus was going to say "if they give me back the game" but he decided it was a bad idea to say it. He obvious didn't expect conspiracy theorists like Hans Nieman to say that he planned the whole thing. If he knew, he probably would've finished his sentence and said give him his game back. FIDE really went all out on jeans that barely matters once seated. I get it if it was bypassing security checks, or some other unfair advantage. But FIDE went all out on jeans... Even repeat customers at restaurants get special treatment, but for Magnus, they basically ruined his tournament over jeans, so if they go all out against their reigning champ for jeans, why should he stay at that point when he can't even compete for 1st place anymore? Discretion would not have been abused at all for waiting a day in regard to jeans. This was not Magnus wearing a ripped t-shirt, but jeans that was hardly noticeable. FIDE showed NO DISCRETION and went way beyond a fine. They went all out against Magnus, the opposite of discretion in fact.
@SmartWatches-xu6ri24 күн бұрын
@Viewer13128 not saying the way he would return is not not making drama It could be he just didn't want to be confronted with Fide actually doing what he said and then him having to come back Also I don't really have time to read the rest but I doubt that this wasn't planned
@SnacksInB424 күн бұрын
People keep saying "Magnus' ventures"... It's *chess*, as a whole. 5 years ago chess was publically miniscule compared to today. Of Course, *EVERYONE* in the chess community would want to be vocal when there is drama. The situation is bigger than Magnus. FIDE's vestigial rules that ultimately have nothing to do with chess for instance definitely push away a lot of newcomers. Imagine being disqualified in an online game of chess because you're wearing shorts at home.

Even a regular customer gets VIP treatment for going to a restaurant often, and FIDE decides to go all out against their reigning champ for jeans? Their champ said sorry and he'd wear the proper attire the next day. FIDE failed to use any discretion (on an issue that gives no advantage in chess) and went all out on Magnus, basically removing any chance to Magnus to compete by taking away a game. FIDE basically forced Magnus to quit. Anyway, Magnus clearly said he was already at the last straw with FIDE's previous attempted threats, and this was the final trigger. You show discretion if it's something like jeans that affects nothing and when sitting is not even obvious (not like Magnus is wearing a ripped t-shirt). We're not talking about letting Magnus skip security checks, giving Magnus bonus time, etc. that affects other players. We're talking about stupid jeans that means nothing when you're seated and FIDE failed to use discretion and basically went all out on Magnus even after Magnus said he'd fix it tomorrow. They wanted it today and if not they would go all out for "jeans" against their reigning champ... Not just a fine, but basically banning a game over jeans for a game where players are seated... It's in fact the opposite of discretion. I'd even say FIDE wanted to give Magnus a "lesson" (and yet Hans conspiracy theorists think Magnus planned it).

Obviously has beef with FIDE already, obviously has self interests that this will now benefit from. What could FIDE even do right in this situation? FIDE is not at fault, they enforced their tournament rules after an appropriate warning, period. FIDE secured Google for the WCC without Carlsen, so sponsorship was no issue. Even when Kasparov broke away with the PCA he also had issues securing sponsors for the PCA WCC and the whole cycle revolved around Kasparovs ego, so naturally it became chaotic and eventually fell apart. Hikaru is again calling for the same thing with his "players union" and as he has no stake in classical chess anymore, he is free to fan this sort of discussion for his own benefit (again add ego) without any repercussions for himself.

This isn’t just about a dress code - it seems like FIDE is punishing Magnus for pushing new ideas like Freestyle Chess. The timing feels intentional. Top players need to come together to challenge FIDE’s outdated rules and approach. Without the best players, FIDE is nothing. Chess needs to evolve, and sticking to rigid, old-fashioned systems will only hold the game back. It’s time for players and fans to unite and demand a fairer, modernized chess world.

He was warned multiple times before having action taken against him, so in that sense he was trying to provoke something himself... Blame rests with both Magnus and FIDE

I you called chess a sport, you can't imagine wearing jeans to football matches 😂😂😂.

lots of haters saying events would still be sponsored even if magnus is not on it. yeah maybe once, but when it's not more profitable coz chess god is not playing then there will be no next time sponsorship. it's like watching a laker game in 2010 knowing kobe getting kicked out and no chance of coming back. you'll see lots of vacant sits 🤣🤣

I don't care what they are wearing, I'm busy trying to understand the best players in the world and what they are doing in the moment. Let them wear jeans or a sweatshirt, I wanna watch the chess speak for itself!

They could have called a vote. The announcer gets on the PA and says, "All in favor of Mr Carlsen continuing, say Aye! --- All in favor of Mr Carlsen changing his pants, say Aye!"

How boring is the current state of chess that the drama involves dress codes. If it wasn't for these online influencers, chess would be dying a quiet death.

Nakamura compared with basketball but in basket ball when they are playing they have to follow dress code 🤷♂️

If they have a problem with this dress code, there should be no dress code in the new org.

The spirit of the game, conflict, naturally spills off and beyond the board. It's not about rules but about character, the dynamics inherent in the play of the game and in the lives of the players. And just as the game has players with different degrees of power, the ability to make different moves and take different positions, the same dynamic is manifested off the board. The players are not equal in strength or value within the chess community. You are not hearing interviews of the lesser valued players. They're not given a voice because they only perform a supporting role. We are seeing a tactical, strategic, and timely move for control by the powerful players (pieces) in the game. Why now? With greater amounts of money at stake, more than ever before in the history of chess, there will be increased conflict, greater risk taken, and greater losses suffered. No surprises here.

The only right answer here is solidarity! All remaining players in the tournament should come together and wear jeans to their next games. They can’t disqualify everyone!

FIDE should incorporate their own Fischer random and have open tournaments. Seems like that could smother the "freestyle" money making enterprise
@golendorfjules183824 күн бұрын
Yes but you see, fide has been doing absolutely nothing for chess in 50 years, all they do is take money from sponsors and put it in their pocket. They do not have a single penny to create any tournament. All the tournament they organize are sponsored and sponsors are there because of magnus. They are useless
@Orchard.McGrizzly24 күн бұрын
@@golendorfjules1838point taken about fide, but not having been involved in the discussions, yet knowing how corporate advertising works vis a vis sponsorship, I’m skeptical of claims that arrangements were dependent on the presence of a single individual. The goals of partnerships are complicated and can be completely unaligned with public expectations.

Rules need a purpose. Rules arent meant to sacrifice the quality of life but defend it. . Magnus was defending champion and being removed for a technicality like jeans that dont inhibit the performance or concentration of other players? Brings into question the quality of fide in general.

It's obvious Naka and Magnus are in this together. The last thing we need is Chesscom running every event in the world for chess. People need to stand up to these clowns.

Let the officials of FIDE have fun with themselves (according to their regulations) and head towards a new chess organization which is more rooted in today's reality

For us mortal chess is hard but fun because you need brain to play, and when Magnus the best who love the game put his heart out then you need make sure your body can handle it.. No jeans can protect you either

About sponsors and audience I think we want really good chess and personalities. The players can preferably be odd, strange or whatever, just not boring dolls.

Hikaru is wrong: NBA players do follow a dress code, they wear the team basket attire, they are not allowed to play in jeans or flip-flops. The NBA public does not have a dress code, as Hikaru says, and the public in this event didn't have any. Many professionals have a dress code, I do not see flight hostesses going to work in jeans and sweat pants. It is not a matter of modernity. It is to know what clothes are made for, and it is not for fashion. Magnus was wearing chinos some days ago in Singapore... this is not a problem about jeans.

With the history of this conflict going all the way back to Bobby Fischer over freestyle chess/fischer random - I think it's pretty clear who is at fault here. Magnus did what he had to do. FIDE is trying to monopolize chess and prevent positive change that would improve the players' pay and the popularity of the game. Bravo Hikaru for being real. Thank you Levy for not being a shill for FIDE.
