The people who think, that a player, as active as Magnus, with a +2800 rating, is somehow under-performing, by loosing to an incredible player like Pragg, are just foolish. No reasonable person and almost certainly no one who competes against Magnus thinks he is anywhere near retirement.

so many chess games have been played and the theory around the best moves in the opening is largely set in stone, so most positions have been reached hundreds of times. when he says completely new game he means a position that has never been reached and cant be found in a database (hes only checking top level GM matches in legitimate events, not random online games). this usually happens around move 12 or 15, but if the players are feeling feisty they might deviate early to confuse the other player or maybe they found an improvement using engine prep
