The explanation of 90% of these moves is very simple: The players just don't analyse the whole position. Most 500 players look for a move they think is okay, and just play that move without considering other options. When checking if a move is "okay", they often just look to see if their opponent can capture the piece they moved. If they didn't see a good move or a threat the first time, they won't even look for it on subsequent moves until something brings their attention back to that idea. To be fair, analysing all the available moves is pretty difficult and even much higher rated players will often miss key ideas for the same reason. It's just most common at this lower ELO. Also I suspect that black genuinely thought the white pawn on h4 guarded the knight on g3 (as if it moved like a black pawn). Probably just forgot that white has the opposite perspective so their pawns guard the other way.

BRO the "if you were born yesterday..." comment made me CACKLE out loud. The ridiculous on-the-fly joke of talking to a 1-day old AND them somehow understanding just SENT me. Props Gotham.

I want someone to animate one of these. All the colorful metaphors like driving the knight off the cliff. I want the high res version of this story.

Gotta love how black opened the squares needed for the fool’s mate, which requires 2 very poor moves to get a move 2 checkmate. Granted, the second diagonal makes this not quite a fool’s mate setup, but it’s close.
