It's funny because I've seen Magnus and other tournaments joke about time or trolling online. The same for Hikaru with other opponents, or playing on the street. It’s a good idea, however Magnus can move his pawn up with the rook still in front, and Hikaru walks like you said. Then Magnus checks Nakakamura’s king with his rook so his pawn cannot be taken. Hikaru will run the king to safety and Magnus will promote. Hikaru ends up taking the queen with his rook and Magnus takes back the rook. Basically it would leave Magnus up a rook because Hikaru would sac a rook for a pawn.

He needs the king to help cover, which opens up the opposite side. If he only uses the rook, the pawn can't promote safely. Hikaru can block it with his own rook if he's in front, or Magnus loses the pawn when he shifts his own rook out of the way for the promotion if Hikaru's rook is behind it. If Magnus commits his own king to the opposite side and gets a trade out of the promotion, Hikaru gets a free promotion and it still ends up even (Magnus' own king would be too far to stop it and a single rook can't challenge a pawn and king in tandem).

Not a pro chess player, but shouldn't the black player place the rook all the way to the king's position at 6:35 and it will checkmate? coz the king will only get 2 moves and there's a rook and pawn checking him. I'm genuinely curious.

If you placed the rook immediately adjacent to the king, the way you're suggesting, it puts the white king in check. The king can then take that rook, as that rook is not protected. This leaves white's rook and two pawns versus black's three pawns. The next move from white would be to take the black pawn (or queen if black's move was to promote) on the 'a' file.

I am not that good either, but in certain situations a trade is worth it. Say for instance the queen is protecting a rook and a bishop simultaneously, then knocking out the queen allows you to attack both pieces easily. So essentially you are correct.
