Does a V8 really need a throttle controller? Yes, but not for why you think.
We recently installed a Hike It XS throttle controller on our Y62 Nissan Patrol and it is unreal. The change in drivability is the main reason I like it. It has 5 main modes that have a 1-10 adjustability and 3 quick launch modes for different situations. Also a lock out security feature.
What does a throttle controller do? Essentially it just changes the throttle input curve of your accelerator pedal to either sharpen or dull it depending on what mode you are using.

The Hike It XS is quite a large unit when it comes to throttle controllers. This is because of the quick and easy twist knob for mode selection. You’ll either love or hate it. For me I love the knob and can live with the size.
The main modes -
4x4 / Eco - this dulls the throttle sensitivity and is great for off road where you need more control through obstacles. Adjustable 1 - 10.
Auto - this is my favourite mode, it learns how you drive and sharpens the throttle curve based on how you’re driving and the inputs through the accelerator. I find it does a good job of knowing what I want it to do.
Cruise - this is not as aggressive as sport but still sharpens response, perfect for when an automatic is on cruise control and changing gears. Adjustable 1 - 10.
Sport - this is a good middle ground starting to lean towards the performance side of the throttle curve. I find it is a friendlier aggressive mode. Adjustable 1 - 10.
Hike It - this is the mode you use if you want flat out or nothing. It sharpens the curve to the most aggressive it can be. It is something else to use, especially in a V8 that already has plenty of get up and go. Adjustable 1 - 10.
The quick access modes -
These can all be activated and deactivated at a quick press of a button.
Valet - when you find the mode you always drive in the valet feature will dumb down the throttle response for when you’re parking, this is great in tight areas where you don’t want a super responsive throttle.
Launch - this takes you strait to Hike It 10, perfect for when you just want to smash the accelerator and go
Anti-slip - this drops down below the lowest 4x4 setting for when you have no traction and essentially need crawl control to help out.
Lockout - this mode locks your throttle to a maximum of 1500 rpm. It’s a security feature for when you are parked essentially.
The Hike IT XS has an easy to see and read blue backlit LCD screen that has auto adjust brightness. I find it works extremely well and is always easy to read.
Overall I think the Hike It Throttle controller is a great unit. Very easy to install, use and read. With seemingly infinite amount of adjustability you can’t go wrong. Check them out at hikeit.com.au and don’t forget HGT10 discount code for 10% off.
