Immerse yourself in a late afternoon hike up Mount Doug in Saanich, B.C. The late afternoon turned to night and I had to rely on a headlamp and lantern to navigate my way down the mountainside.
At night, small rodents can be potential bears😁
It is a crisp day in mid-February when I tackled this hike.
I tried filming this using the 24 frames per second setting. It turns out that on my camera, it does not stabalise the video well on that setting so some of the front facing shots look jittery or shaky, which is unfortunate 🙁
Hopefully, you still enjoyed the experience and I’ll see you back for more!
The lights I used:
Night Scope Rechargeable LED Beanie amzn.to/47Eo0yA
LuminAID PackLite Max 2-in-1 Camping Lantern and Phone Charger amzn.to/493mS8U
Filmed on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

Oh my, I've had a hike like that...thankfully only one...thought Otis and I would never find our way out and had actually resigned myself to staying the night...until someone else was heard coming along in the distance and struck up a conversation and just kept him close! lol

It's great to see how similar your trails are to our coastal trails! Exposed rock in places, same shrubs and trees. Great views from Mount Doug, interesting name, hadn't heard of it before. I wouldn't want to hike back in the dark, but you had plenty of light. The lantern looked great- we have Luci lights that would work well too. 👌😃👍👍

It's not really a mountain. It's a big hill named after the first governor of British Columbia. Even with the light, I was a little nervous about hiking down in the dark. I made it though😁 The lantern is similar to the Luci lights.

There was some tough terrain on that hike. Awsome view of the city and moutain range. I don't know that I would be able to climb them steep rock faces. But the views oh my the views. Then boom city lights on the bay. Geez Louise, it just keeps getting prettier. Awesome lantern. Even with the lantern, I would be nervous on that terrain. What a great hike

It does have some tougher bits that you need to scramble up. I think you could make it though. The views are pretty awesome😁 I enjoy the city lights lighting up the evening down there. The lantern and my headlamp worked pretty well. I could have navigated with just the lantern. I was worried about bumping into something like a cougar up there. Even an upset deer would not be good. Even the rabbit made me nervous at first because I didn't know what it was, lol😂 I was climbing down slow and carefully because it was tougher without being able to see super far ahead.

Good adventure terrain. The most convenient way to get back home is to fly back with a hang glider. MacGyver made something like that once out of tent fabric and tent pipes. It has to work. In section 14.25 there was not a rabbit but a jackalope. I know because they are everywhere here too. 😄 It must have been pitch dark there, but the camera still gives a slightly brighter picture. Difficult to travel in the dark in such demanding terrain. Fortunately, nowadays there are good LED lights.
@agesadventures
@agesadventures 2 ай бұрын
I'll try the MacGyver hand glider next time. That's seems like a fun way down the mountain! A jackalope? Yikes😱 It was very dark! The camera on the Google Pixel 8 Pro cellphone is a pretty good one. I'm happy with the camera on it. It's a big improvement over my Google Pixel 5 phone I have. The LED lights we have nowadays are quite amazing! They do a great job of lighting the way!

Yeah, I was pretty quiet that day😃 The night view is pretty cool up there! I thought about circling the rabbit in the video. I barely saw it in real life, lol😁 I saw the shine of its eyes first. I didn't know what it was and it startled me. I just knew there was an animal there looking at me. I'm not a fan of hiking in the dark, especially when we have big animals that can get mean. I did make it though😊😊

@@agesadventures 24fps is awful. - it seems of to watch on a phone but the bigger the screen the worse the jitter gets. the hiking down the path scenes at 16 minutes work well, just the crop could be slower , it looks like you were testing out some gear on this one.
@agesadventures
@agesadventures 2 ай бұрын
@@lifesahobby yeah, the 24fps is not good at all! I won't be trying that again for something handheld. Maybe it would work if I had a gimbal. The crop happens because the camera was placed crookedly on the ground and when I accommodated for that by rotating the video I needed to crop in too much. I also was not able to see where I would be coming from when I placed the camera because it was dark😁 I got to test out the lights for getting down the dark😃 I won't be doing that again if I don't have to. This took a lot of work. It's scary enough to hike in the woods at night, but you took the time to set up the camera to get good b roll. It sounded like you almost lost the trail at least once. Glad you survived to make another one, Age!
@agesadventures
@agesadventures 2 ай бұрын
Thank you, Christian😁 It did take a lot of work. There is a lot of back and forth to get shots. I figured since I was already out there hiking down in the dark, I may as well get my money's worth and get some hiking shots of me walking to the camera and then away. The walking to the camera wasn't too much of a worry, but the walking away had me a little on edge. Everything would get dark and then the camera phone would disappear since it is already black to begin with and it is not giving off any light. I'll have to get something reflective to leave with it if I ever do another night shoot. Hiking down in the dark is not preferable. You cannot see as well, so I was taking it more slowly. I was also nervous about bumping into a predator. Even though this is close to the city, there are still cougars that will roam around there and there has been the odd bear up there. I did lose the trail and backtracked and then another time I took a wrong turn that got me on to the road leading down earlier than I wanted to. I was going to have to cross the road at one point. So instead of heading back into the bushed to correct my mistake, I walked down the road a little bit and crossed to the trail at the appropriate time. I don't think I'll be doing a lot more night hikes. It seems safer when there is sunlight😃 I was disappointed with the video framerate issue and some jitter in this one, but that was a lesson learned. You're right, I survived😊 I'll be planning more videos and trying to make some more engaging content.

So 24fps, do you usually shoot at 30? A very rugged looking hike, Age. Beautiful views from the tops as well. Well done. 👍
@agesadventures
@agesadventures 2 ай бұрын
I usually shoot at 60 fps. I've watched a lot of videos on how to film and a lot of them talk about 24 fps being awesome and cinematic. It is also supposed to do better in low light. Well, my new phone does 24 fps and I thought I'd give it a go. I found the 24 fps to give bit of a jitter, especially when the camera was not looking at my face. It didn't know what to focus on for the stabilisation function. 60 fps works much better to smooth it out. I'll try something shorter one more time. There is another option on my phone to increase the amount of stabalisation. Hopefully, the video wasn't too bad that it turned people off! It's a good little hike and yeah, the views from the top with the house lights all on is pretty neat😁 I think for these more silent hikes, I need to plan some voiceover. That or I need to do more to immerse people in the video.
