I drove down from Hillsboro to Salem for the eclipse. It took over 3 hours to get back to Hillsboro! I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

The eclipse was cool. I watched it from work. We all took our office chairs outside for an hour and watched.

Awesome info. You're one of the few sources I've found on healthy hiker food. It's so crazy how much "crap" people eat when taxing their bodies so hard during a hike. I don't eat grains, so I would eat a more paleo breakfast (bacon and eggs), but I'll be incorporating more of what you listed here. Also, AWESOME job meal planning! I always take to much as well and I LOVE lists. OCD at its finest. Thanks for sharing and God bless!

I try my best to fuel my body with good things when I’m expecting so much from it. It’s insane how many thru hikers just eat gummy candy, snickers and plain ramen. I understand being on a budget and having to eat ramen, but you can make that semi healthy too by adding dehydrated meat and veggies to the soup. Lists are definitely your friend when going backpacking and planning a trip :) thanks for watching!

Neat bag... for lunch I sometimes take an old style salami stick , and a loaf of bread... which I cut as I go. I also have nalgene containers with vegemite, peanut butter... tabasco sauce can add spice to evening meals.

I stick my meals in a quart freezer tip lock bag. But keep a mountain house bag to stick your meal in to help it cook. It will stay clean and is reusable for all your cooked meals.

Great video again. Very interesting. I like your logic behind your food choices. Great idea dumping the heavy packaging and putting the contents (with directions) in ziplocks, and taking the roll out of t.p.! Looking forward to your next video. (BTW...Your eyes photograph beautifully.)

You are so organized. I just throw a lil more than 4 days of food (if im doin 4 days) in a bag and go williy nilly, eat whatever im in the mood for trying to kill heavy items first. Never had an issue

May I also suggest emergency C as a drink mix, it helps keep your immune system strong. I like the raspberry. I also carry small packets of mustard, I mix with my supper meal. Mustard helps prevent muscle cramps. I’ve learned most of these tricks while in the military during long hikes or road marches carrying large loads.

I would take some hot smoked, cooked meat in delicious sauce. It may weigh slightly more than freeze dried beetles and sawdust, but it sure does taste better and would easily last til the 4th day. Meat in sauce also has masses of protein, and, if you choose the right cut (i.e. belly, neck or skirt), masses of fat too for energy. Good luck with your hike, and also for the PCT you intend to hike. Thank you for posting.

Hi! I’m not sure if you answered this in another video, so I apologize if this is a redundant question. I’m new to backpacking and also in Oregon. I wanted to know if you used a bear bag in addition to this bag and if not how you store your food? Thank you!

In areas where bears are prevalent I use a bear canister. For all other trips I just use this bag and I can tie it up in a tree if I need to. In the high elevations where I usually backpack our main concern is rodents.

Toothpaste is also a consumable. It should be kept with you food bag when in bear country. I just leave my personal hygiene bag in my food bag.

I do something similar to you as far as planning out my meals, but I never follow a specific menu plan. I'll figure how many breakfasts, lunches, and dinners I need and how many days of snacks that I need. While on the trail, I'll end up mixing and matching the lunches, dinners, and snacks anyway. I also total the calories and protein for the foods that I'm taking and will make adjustments to take between 2,800 and 3,000 calories per day because I know that's all the appetite that I have even on a two week trip. I will make further adjustments to hit at least 100 g of protein per day based on my weight and both military and private studies on weight loss/maintenance, it is very important to get sufficient protein in order to maintain strength and stamina. The fact that I enjoy protein powders with Nido whole milk powder really helps me bump up the protein content when needed. This planning helps me end up with little or no extra food at the end of a hike. To me the perfect hike is the one where I run out of food the last morning on trail. I totally agree that Mt House and the like are poor choices for nutrition, way high in salt, and not really that tasty for me, though I know lots of hikers really like them. 5 lbs for 4 days of food is super light. The rule of thumb is 1.5 to 2 lbs per day. With good calorie dense food, say 120 calories per ounce, that works out to 2,800 to 3,800 calories per day. Most people can't believe that I can cram a weeks worth of food into a Bear Vault 450. Of course that's really a calorie to volume issue. But I end up taking foods that I can add oil to and improve the flavor along with tortillas, peanut butter, and trail mix. Also, I need my Snickers bar every day. ;-)

Yes I try to look at calorie dense food too. But I don't honestly have a huge appetite when I'm hiking in the summer time, until I've hiked for over a week...then the hiker hunger kicks in.

I unfortunately haven't seen a similar sack in a smaller version. That one I have is a 20L and they also make a 30L. For day hikes I would suggest just taking a stuff sack with one compartment since you won't be carrying that much food anyway and you could separate snacks and stuff just with ziplock bags.

No need to worry too much of sodium. In normal life and hiking is totally not the same. Whatever you take in will be burn out.

I rarely use salt when making meals so I am insanely sensitive to sodium and I get all kinds of swollen and puffy if I then eat a ton of it out while backpacking. I also suffer from high blood pressure so I do need to watch my sodium intake.

So glad I found your channel. One alternative for oatmeal. I make mine with raisins and walnuts.(The raisins get nice and plump when they get in the hot water) If you are looking for a change. :) I didn't think of coconut!

I actually HATE raisins! But yes, coconut adds lots of calories. You can also put dried apples and some cinnamon in your oatmeal along with the coconut and some walnuts. It tastes like an apple crisp!

Love the idea of removing the Mountain house from those bags, but how do you re hydrate then> Do you add boiling water to the ziplock or cook the food in a pot? Packitgourmet has bags that you can put boilinb water in - are you using those?

the bags make clean up better though.. i only use my pot to boil as it keeps my pot clean. the weight of the bag is nothing.

Carbs/Protein/fat is dependent upon the hikers body mass index but you hit spot on for your needs from what I can see (not judging). PS I'm the heavy guy that needs more carbs and protein to keep me going... a lot more. LOL ;)

Yea once I hike for more than a week that hiker hunger kicks in for me and then I want ALL the carbs and sugars!!!!! But I honestly barely eat when I'm on day hikes in the summer. During the winter it's a different story.

I think it is very unlucky that the totality falls in some of the most beautiful parts of Oregon. They will get trashed by the millions of people coming this way. I am not looking forward to seeing the aftermath of this.

Ignore the advise about sodium when it comes to backpacking. While the VAST majority of American take in WAY too much sodium, while backpacking you are sweating so much that is hard to take in too much sodium. A classic thru hiker meal is a "ramen bomb" which is instant mash potato and ramen and has over 50% of your "daily sodium" in one meal. Unlike in "normal life" while doing a real hike, there is very little you can do to get "too many calorie" or "too much sodium". You are burning calories and sweating salt like you would be if you were at the gym, working hard for 10+ hour per day. The real reason to not get the backpacker meals much while thru hiking is that they cost WAY to damn much. I mean $7 per "meal" doesn't seem unreasonable for a weekend trip, but if you are out for 5 months and need 6000 calories per day it is insane.

I hear ya on the sodium and I totally agree. I just don't much care for the other chemicals and additives in the Mountain House meals, but like I said, for a weekend trip it's totally fine. When I do the Oregon section of the PCT next year, I will be taking exclusively Outdoor Herbivore :).

For me, they just seem too damn costly for any long trip. Spend $70 for 10 meals for a 4 day trip is reasonable, but if you are out for 3 weeks, that will run you nearly $400 and you can get most of the same stuff for under $100. I feel like 90+% of backpacking food is vegetarian, and the meat is just something added because people want it. Just make sure to bring an protein which is easy with nuts and legumes. Happy trails!

sounds like you no what you are talking about although I expect you might have a touch of OCD planning every meal. I found when I was carrying a pack every day for long periods of time you had watch your diet and try to make it as normal as possible. I also knocked off eating peanuts and cereal bars ect and started eating carrots , apples and oranges for snack food , bannana,s also but they dont transport very well. Whole foods have a slower burn and give you a more sustained energy. Keep the sugary stuff for emergency,s I always found that hiking and a full stomach never went that well together so just had light meals during the day and had a big nose bag in the evening. For hiking the evening meal is the most important and gives you the fuel for the next day. One criticism of you food is you what about emergency food. What happens if you get crook or pull a hammy or twist an ankle. You might have to wait out a storm or a swollen river. I would recommend a few more packs of oatmeal and 2 or three packs of boil in the bag rice. weighs nothing . If you spend long enough in the out doors you will face some sort of delay or emergency. I also keep freeze dry food just for emergencys in my humble opinion it tastes like bottom. I have a pack thats well over ten years old that I keep in my emergency pouch and hope I never have to eat.

Huntarama I totally agree! I got stuck in a ski trip in Vermont for 5 days in a lodge. Freak snow storm, the roads were not passable and the lodge could not receive deliveries. We ate everything that was in a vending machine. Ever since then I carry a mountain house meal and a couple of protein bars EVERYWHERE I go. Great channel. I'm using it to plan a trip to Oregon/Vancouver. Thanks

Planning every meal helps me not pack too much or too little food. On longer trips I do take an extra dinner meal just in case we don't make it to our resupply point in time, but on a meticulously planned loop that has MANY exit points like that one we're doing, extra meals just aren't necessary. I do take extra food in my day pack though, just in case I get lost. But this particular hike is super easy, you can't get lost, and if you get hurt, there are multiple exit points. I have packed PLENTY of food. Like I said in the video, I guarantee you I will have lots of this left over when I get home. I don't eat a lot when I'm out for less than 5 days.

Hiker Oregon Please don't say those words super easy and you can't get lost. You are inviting catastrophe. The closest I come to dying in the out doors was in a area that was super easy and impossible to get lost in.The list thing is really a great idea .I found when I started making lists it cut down time spent packing.without a list you tend to fill your pack up then find out you forgot something when its too late.

Everyone should do what is right for them but in my opinion and the opinion of very knowledgeable backpacking experts she's doing it right. The average person should aim for 125 cal/oz for backpacking food. And about 1.5 lbs/day. You won't be able to do that by packing fresh fruit or vegetables which are mostly water. The saying goes "people pack their fears". They pack too much water, food or clothes because they fear going thirsty, hungry or cold. A human can survive for 3 WEEKS without food!

Base weight is not what you are carrying. Base weight is only a guideline.

I’m not trying to be Dixie or anyone else but me on KZbin. Also, as a beginning KZbinr we are all still learning. This video is almost 2 years old, before I knew much about making videos. Everyone has to start somewhere, and it’s not easy putting yourself out there. If you watch any of my recent sit down videos you’ll find them better edited and filmed with a good quality camera as well.

besides the chocolate everything else is fruit sugar. I'd say compared to a lot of hikers, this is pretty healthy food.

ew pink salmon...lol mushy cat food.. we refuse to eat pink salmon in Alaska. i can't believe people at that stuff... sockeye(red) salmon is waaaaay better.

I don't think they sell sockeye salmon in packets like this. When I eat at home I make sure to get the good stuff.

+Mikey Biller wow that's harsh. If you've watched any of my other videos you can see that I'm in my yard when filming all of my informational videos. I go on one day hike a week. I work extremely hard to put these videos together because it is my hobby. I don't make an income off of my website or my videos, and I do all of this on top of working 40 hours a week and being a wife to a husband who also works hard. I would love to be able to travel but I actually won't even get a vacation this year. I have never collected unemployment and I own my home. Please watch a few more of my videos before making assumptions.
