Fiddle factor with a gathered end, constantly adjusting the quilt, and pressure on back of my heel was a big reason I switched to a ridgerunner setup. Sometimes too much adjustability can lead to a lot of second guessing.

Great video Mark. I've bought two 12' hammocks from Dutch (one being a Chameleon) and shoulder squeeze is no longer an issue for me. With them being so wide, my HG underquilt cinch cords are loosened all the way. Where our property is, gets some really high winds and would occasionally get that draft stealing heat from underneath. I bought an UQ protector and havent had an issue yet. The only problem with the 12' hammocks, is that i need to buy 13' tarps now 😮‍💨

Interesting design with the hammock with the ridgeline higher. I dig the snaps on the tarp. That sucks about your underquilt issues. I'd rather not have an adjustable ridgeline. That's a lot of cords and hardware in the way to snag on stuff I want to hang. Good to see you out there. Hope your health improves quickly.

Tarp closure etc.. I much prefer using a hex tarp in general. For wind I usually bring along an UQP which protects me. Nighttime 'duties' are easy. Out and back. No snaps on a tarp, no messing around.

Nice video. I've made a few hammocks for myself and like to have an adjustable ridgeline when I'm dialing it in. But yeah, once you know the length you like, replace it with a fixed one. No reason to screw with perfection. Happy trails, cheers!

My first true hammock camping tarp was a Kelly Noah 12. While it did its job, I learned some things using that tarp paired with an 11 ft. hammock in severe conditions. First, I would be better served with a 14 ft. tarp for better total coverage. Second, I am better served using a truly square tarp because it can be configured in more ways without any one way creating awkward coverage. Third, with a 14 ft. square tarp (3x3 meters in metric system) I can create true “tarp-tent configurations that amplify and compliment the benefits of underquilts and hammock socks. When camping in cold or substantially inclement weather I don’t see the benefits of using short tarps that leave huge gaps for air to flow underneath the hammock and possibly into the gaps on underquilts. The so-called weight savings of these 10 ft. Irregular-cut tarps aren’t worth it in inclement weather in my opinion.

With regard to air gaps between hammock and UQ, yeah, the struggle is real. I picked up a couple of the ridgeline quilt hooks from Dutchware and they work really well. the V part goes over the ridgeline and the primary suspension is fed through those pulling the quilt up a bit more snug. The downside is that they do kinda pull the ends of the quilt in to the center a bit more so they might make the shoulder squeeze issue a bit worse. I'm most likely going to get an underquilt protector to try and keep the wind out a bit. Also, since I'm still mainly using your old Superior Gear hammock I'm planning to get one of the SG comforters so I can just snap it onto the hammock and call it a day.

Yeah it’s something I had forgotten about since that just doesn’t happen on the bridges. I have used the V clips over the ridgeline in the past, what I like about the solution Bill came up with is that it’s able to be used in the area of the hammock/uq that you need it most as it can connect to the edge of the UQ and at any pull out tabs on the Uq

Nice review, I'm leaning towards a Superior Gear integrated hammock, because I don't like fussing with my under quilt. Going to pair it with a Dutchware Winter Tarp Wide and dual pole mods.

With the wind issue in colder months, Im migrating to trying Warbonnet hammock socks for the gathered end and a spindrift sock for the ridgerunner for cases where winds flow through the head/foot ends of the superfly tarp. Condensation is my only potential concern. Underquilt protectors may help a little with the UQ airgap issue.

Thanks for the initial review of that hammock. I also will be experimenting with a new gathered end hammock. After 5 years of comfortable sleeps, my 11' gathered end hammock started to give me sciatica. I opted to try a wide, 12' Trail Lair. Its sewn-in continuous loops option is supposed to reduce calf ridge.

Superior Gear hammocks seem like the way to go for colder weather. Zero cold spots and immediate warmth. The War Bonnet wookie is my current favorite. Thanks for the great video - all the best ✌🏼

This adjustable ridgeline is just an option for the Majestic. Can be a fixed as well.
