California Through My Lens

Journey with us through the towering redwoods and lush landscapes of Big Basin State Park, California's first state park. We weave through the ancient, majestic redwood forests and see what the park is like after the devastating fire in 2020. While many of the trails are still closed, we were able to hike the Redwood Loop and the Meteor Trail in this video. Hopefully, this video encourages you to revisit the park. Let me know what your favorite trail is in the comments.

I live about 30 miles south of here. The fire in 2020 was devastating--we had ash falling on our house for days. I haven't been back to BB since, but my folks recently went for a special walk with the State Parks (my dad is a docent). More trails are opening gradually. Love to see the new growth!

I was very lucky to have hiked there 2018/2019. Big basin is why I love hiking the forests. Nothing will beat my first time hiking a day after the rain and was amazed how many waterfalls/creeks there were. Glad the forest is reviving so fast.

I live about 45 mins from here and I always think about trying to take advantage of all these parks the state has to offer. You really never know if a big fire might wash through some of these places. It’s awesome to see it rebounding.

Nice video. Nice to see you in Northern California again at last. I didn't realize that BB Park was so ravaged in 2020. Nice to see the resurgence and sustainability still intact. Unfortunately every time I see video of the redwoods that live in the forests today, I'm reminded that pre-19th century, all the old growth trees, which were completely razed by US logging industry, were all giants with some having trunks 20-30 feet in diameter. It will take another 1000 years before any human will possibly see a tree of those ❤ proportions. Thanks for the nice video. Peace from east of the Gabilans.

I’ve been to pretty much every redwood grove in CA but I’ve never been to big basin. I def want to see it. I’m just bummed that I didn’t get to see it before the fires. But the redwoods are so resilient when it comes to fire damage. Thanks for posting about this

Thanks for the video. I worked there for 4 years, I was living in Jay Camp and was the last worker to be evacuated in the 2020 fire, about 8 in the evening. That place was/is amazing.

Great editing and shots - the blackened redwood trunks with the little tufts of green leaves is a bit otherworldly looking, isn't it? Thanks for taking us along on your hikes!

We visited on a weekday in April. I was fascinated to see the regrowth of the trees. Especially fascinated by those "fuzzy" trees that looked like pipe cleaners! The ranger explained that the trees sent the leaves out to get the food from the leaves so that is can continue to grow branches. Only the Redwood Loop was open when we were there, but it was very interesting.

Thanks for the nice walk, haven't been there in decades. For redwoods fire is a normal part of the life cycle, they evolved to tolerate it and take advantage of it, notice the many new trees sprouting.

So good to see you touring in my literal neck of the woods 😊. My family and I evacuated back during the CZU fire in 2020 and I have progressively hiked more of the park as trails and fire roads have been re-opened. In addition to your hikes, the Hihn-Hammond fire road up to Mt McAbee provides a great view down to Waddell Beach and beyond to the Pacific. If you are up for a really big hike, there are a few ways to hike out to Chalk Mountain and the view down to Ano Nuevo SP and the Pacific are wonderful. 👍👍

My favorite park when I lived in Palo Alto. We used to call the road to get there “throw up road”. Quite twisty but beautiful. Are they rebuilding the visitor center ?

It is very sad that the fire destroyed so much of the park. But it’s still very beautiful, and I want to go visit. Thank you, Josh. Question… do you know if the America the Beautiful pass would take care of the parking fee? Or that’s something that has to be purchased separately?
@cindytjeerdema5255
@cindytjeerdema5255 2 ай бұрын
I know you asked Josh, but I can tell you Big Basin requires a CA state park pass or pay the daily entrance fee. Best to make an online reservation as parking is very limited. They also charge an extra $2 to make an online reservation.

No, but the park is using the opportunity to reimagine facilities, and it takes a long time to restore trails. They have worked very hard to open the park back up.

How about this. Lots drugged out homeless people in California. We spent 25 billion on them. Why not make them work fixiing trails. It would be good health excercise for them. Probale help them kick theur drug addiction. King like WPA unde the new deal.
