Make sure you look for yooperlite stones in Lake Superior, you'll need a black light and when you get to the lower peninsula make sure you hunt for Michigan's state stone; the Petoskey stone. Can find just about on any shore. And get the pasties at Roy's Pasties in Houghton. Order the day before, get the turkey and of course the original.
@AdventuresofAplusK3 жыл бұрын
We really wanted to hunt for the stones! And we did eat pasties (somewhere else though), which will be in a couple videos.

Hi, folks. I was born in Michigan. I have hiked much of it. Taquamenon Falls is farther east. It is like a mini Niagara. If the summer is a wet one the falls will be spectacular, from the run-off above the Upper Falls. I live in Fla. now; but plan to move back for good, soon. Dennis Pine.

I have been enjoying your videos. I live in Michigan's lower peninsula, but have done a lot of hiking in the UP over the years, including the Porkies. I hope that firewood was local. The DNR doesn't want anyone to bring firewood from somewhere else; it puts the trees at risk, because you can bring bugs or tree viruses in with the wood. The Porkies boast one of the largest stands of virgin forest this side of the Mississippi. If you ever get a chance to go back, I highly recommend getting into the park's interior. The trees are absolutely amazing!

From your video it looks like you took the West trail on the presque Isle River Walk. The East trail is rougher but the views of the falls are much better. My wife and I were there about a week or two before you and we walked the east side first to the South boundary Road, crossed over the bridge and came back the West side which is a much easier walk. We also did the escarpment trail but only about half of it. Great views! Enjoyed the video.

@AdventuresofAplusK3 жыл бұрын
Thankfully we didn’t get too attacked by mosquitoes! What were your favorite spots on the Keweenaw Peninsula growing up?
@blahblah14u3 жыл бұрын
I didn't grow up there but my moms parents were there so we would go every year. I would check out the Michigan Tech's rock museum. All the mines my parents would let me visit. I thought the Quincy was so cool because it still had its hoist building overlooking the portage lake. There is a mom and pop bakery/restaurant in Laurium that just makes some great pastries cause growing up in the south we really didn't have those so i would grab a fresh cinnamon roll. I would tramp though the mine tailings of the Cliff Mines with a rock hammer and would get a few pieces of native copper. We would play on the dark Stamp sand at Gay. Go to copper harbor and see Brockway Mt Drive and have a lunch or dinner at the Kewaanaw Mountian Lodge that was build by the CCC back during the depression. They would rent a cabin. Think of Dirty Dancing they had tennis courts and golf and activities for family's back when it was the style. Just the beautify and collecting thimbleberries that was fun. So much history with all the ghost towns that were once busy mines. I could write so much it probably is to much to post here. But if you ever got to the Cliff mines that was the first profitable copper mine there.

Wonderful start to your series on my state! All of your videos come with one of two good feelings: 1) the joy of learning about a new place and taking notes, or 2) that "Oh yeah, I've been there! Yup, I've done that!" feeling. Probably for the first time since your Zion videos, I got to enjoy the second feeling. I went the reverse direction on Escarpment, so I did the Government Peak parking lot turnaround, but there were two cool things from that: having the Lake of the Clouds Overlook to myself at 8:20 AM (breathtaking) and coming back in an eerie late morning fog. There are a lot of rocks on the trail. On the Presque Isle River, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who got confused between Manido and Nawadaha Falls! There isn't an AllTrails option that really nails it in that area. Good job by Adam noting the influence of the eddies! The order of my photos in my backup app got jumbled thanks to crossing the time zones. :) On my way to Bond Falls afterwards, I saw the "Now entering Eastern Time Zone" sign (I was an animal that day - 11 miles wasn't enough!). Once again, awesome start, and I'm really looking forward to the Keweenaw video! One thing I'll say about Keweenaw: it's impossible to go there one time and feel like you've seen everything. Between hiking and history, there's so much there!
@AdventuresofAplusK3 жыл бұрын
It was super confusing at the falls! The boardwalks just end and we were convinced that the rooty way wasn’t right haha. Glad we tried to figure it out because we enjoyed Nawadaha falls! We excited to share the Keweenaw peninsula. It was full of history and we tried to learn as much as we could!
@jameswaldecker12363 жыл бұрын
Ah, I should have told you that in the Pleasant Peninsulas, the rooty way is the right way! We apparently like having tree roots in our trails (yes, Tahquamenon and Bare Bluff, I'm looking at you). Glad you went all in on the recreation passport; for us residents that annual pass is only $12 with vehicle registration, which is a total steal. Back in May, we discussed the copper mines of the Keweenaw Peninsula, and I've been looking forward to what you'll do there ever since, especially now that I've had my own adventures there!

I love that this place is nicknamed the porkies 🐖🐷 Awesome shot of the toad/frog, wasn't sure which it was! 🐸 The time zone borders can confuse the heck out of me. Am I right in thinking Page is similar because some businesses are in AZ whilst others are in UT. If I've got that wrong, it's somewhere else I've travelled to. The waterfalls at Presque Isle were lovely, but I have to say all of this is giving me serious Adirondack vibes so I really hope you're not bored of this type of landscape by the time you make it over the NY! Good work with locating that campsite - and scaring off the other 2 parties? 🤔🤣
@AdventuresofAplusK3 жыл бұрын
Isn’t that the cutest and funniest nickname? 😂 and you’re right! Arizona doesn’t do daylight savings, so when you cross into UT from AZ (or vice versa) it changes certain months of the year! And we are SO pumped for the Adirondacks! I think it’ll be a bit more mountainous, which we are so excited for. We cannot wait to be in the mountains again! Although, bad news…I was going to tell you that the ice cream place you recommended closed for the season already and we are so sad because we had planned to go there 😭😫 Unfortunately both parties arrived minutes after I said that lol! Another great one! We literally did this exact thing last August 2020. We stayed the Union River 'Big Bear' Campground just north of the Porcupines (highly recommended for anyone reading this for a great spot...it's across the street from Lake Superior and is in a little bay so it tends to be calm. You can walk out a LONG way on the lake which is so cool.) I LOVED Presque Isle as well...our kids too. So fun playing in the water where you can walk out between the waterfalls there. Also, on your waterfall walk, did you make it to Lake Superior there? After that suspension bridge you can head down to the lake and it's a really cool spot seeing the river dump into the lake.

You drive down the road and it's just short hikes to a series of waterfalls that are really gorgeous. By the way this area gets massive amounts of snow in the Winter they average like 300". It's the snowiest area in the United States outside of the high elevations of the West.

We read about the snow while on the Keweenaw peninsula. So wild!

Very nice. Remote enough that there weren't a lot of other visitors?

We went on a Sunday so it was decently busy with families since summer break was still happening, but not too bad if you go onto trails vs just the easier overlooks!

How many miles or hours total did it take you to hike from the government trail head to lake of the clouds and back?
@AdventuresofAplusK3 жыл бұрын
It ended up being 8.6 miles and 4 hours for us

I would recommend long pants and long sleeve shirts, hat with a brim and mosquito netting. Lots of mosquito spray with high DEET percentages. Hiking boots and heavy socks. Inland away from the Lakes you will be eaten alive by Mosquitoes. In the winter the "no see-ems" will pester you. Just warning you what they don't tell you! My wife and I went hiking in the UP in August went 75ft on wooden trail then escaped back to our truck. Horrible insects

That’s a good tip for folks. We didn’t experience anything like this on our trip, but we have no doubt they’re there at certain times of the year. We didn’t cover it in this video because we didn’t experience it and hadn’t read anything about it beforehand. We share our experience. Thanks for watching!

How comfortable and sturdy are those chairs you guys were using at the end of the video? Is it a chair you would recommend?

We love them and have used them for years without issues. We have a link to our gear in our pinned comment if you’d like to see the brand.

My husband and I also have these chairs and we love them! Way comfier and sturdier than you would think! And they were affordable and pack up small!

Was that pass $ 34.00 per person or for both of you together? Kona had fun on the hike.

It was for the whole vehicle! I’m not sure if they have rules on how many people can be in the vehicle for that cost though.
