Let me try to enlighten you on these tunnels and why they are closed as I have understood it. So these galleries and tunnels are privately owned, and there are over 1400 such galleries on the island. There was an incident back in 2007 where a big group of hikers had mistaken a mine for a tunnel, and thus walked many kilometers into nowhere, thinking they were doing a shortcut, leading to the death of quite the number of them. I cant remember how many at the moment, but there was a very dangerous rescue operation and after that they passed a law to oblige the owners to close these openings. As far as I have heard, not being particularly familiar myself yet in that area, it is very random which of them are and which of them are not open. There is a variety of more and less gnarly routes around there as I understand it. Anyway I share and understand your frustration with all the red tape. Yes, security is important and some of these openings on the island is best left unexplored, and yes people have certainly died from carbon dioxide poisoning, from but I think it was a bit heavy handed to decide to just close them all.

Thanks for the clarificaton. It makes sense to me more now. Closing a branching and obviously dangerous mine would be perfectly understandable. Doing the same for a straight tunnel is another matter. It seems an obvious overreaction and actually harmful because people learn that official bans can be seemingly safely ignored. I saw numerous signs at hiking trails which also prohibited hiking there. Usually there was nothing too dangerous. It just seems that the local authorities want to absolve themselves from any resposibility. Another weird example of Spanish bans are dogs on beaches. I saw numerous signs that dogs are not allowed and right next to these signs people are walking their dogs in great numbers and the authorities that should enforce these bans do absolutely nothing. It pissed me off that children are playing on the beach and dogs are allowed to take crap right next to them but what can I do?

@@SUPHiker I 100% agree with everything you say. They have put up so much red tape that not even the police knows what to enforce anymore and with INSANE fines. Flying a drone the wrong place in Spain can cost you literally millions of euros, which is utter madness. This dogs on beaches thing is also weird. Would maybe make sense on some beaches, but certainly not all. There are lots of beaches here with zero people on them right there are hundreds of beaches to choose from.

Yes, the tunnels would be a very convenient way to transport drugs, a body or people.

Water is quite clean, but a pro tip is to bring a filter bag. Really nice and super informative video. Learned a lot.

Yea, I use filter regularly. Not always necessary but I generally don't trust water from nature enough to directly consume it.
