After my Icelandic State Park hike, I drove up to Pembina Gorge, near Walhalla. I ended up stopping early thanks to rain, but found some other things.

Were those service berries that you showed in the beginning? That does look like sumac to me too! I love sumac, such a fun flavor profile. Gorgeous trail, nice to experience both the prairie and the forest. I enjoy exploring dirt roads so much. Thank you for sharing your adventure!

I believe they were service berries. We don't see them at my end of the state very much. And sumac does add a lot! Glad you enjoyed, even though I got rained out. Exploring dirt roads is a lot of fun, and I'm actually going to review a book on Monday that talks about that.

Nice and green in the summer. Out here in California the hills turn brown in the dry summertime. Ugly and desolate. Stay close to the ocean or go up in the mountains where there are more trees. I drove up from SF to Oregon and back last week. Worst wildfire damage I've ever seen. Or smelled. Up close. Yikes.

That part of the state is much more green than my part. Everything is brown here. I've been hearing about your fires, and I see the evidence in my sky: we're no longer getting clear blue skies in the summer and today I began noticing a smoke smell in the air. Scary! And, especially in the Northwest, they're not ready for this kind of weather.

Throw in some dry stone fences and at this time of year a bunch of ferns, the trail would look like it's in Cornwall or Wales (or like the area in southern Michigan that I grew up in.) I remember finding out that sumac was edible. We had a big stand of sumac at the edge of our front yard, and my mom was absolutely horrified. (She just wouldn't be convinced that it wasn't poison sumac. Red, not the white of poison sumac, but she was VERY allergic to anything poison ivy or the like, and VERY stubborn when she got something in her head.) Great video! There was a similar bridge near my grandparents' home. Sadly replaced by something modern, in the early 1990s. And in Branch County, Michigan, there's still a similar one (though that one looks like it's a single lane bridge, and the one over Hog Creek is 2 lane.) Love seeing the variety of videos you have! Great scenery! I have a real soft spot for dirt, backcountry roads (Lived on them, my entire childhood.) And the antique autos were a nice addition! Thanks for sharing this!

It's not wet enough here to have a lot of ferns... That sumac was edible was a surprise to me too, though I had tasted from the plant as a boy. But I see so much more potential now! I'm glad you enjoyed the bridge. There was one in my hometown. My parents tell me that its replacement resulted in a horrific disruption to traffic for almost a year: it was on a major highway. I'm glad you enjoyed the extras in this video!

Beautiful scenery…. Would be neat to see how it changes with the seasons, too.

I love tall trees and abundance of them, reminds me of a school I went in Oregon years ago. Your hiking transported me to these places and feels nice. Thank you 🐿🌿

None of these are very tall, but I'm glad that it was enough to transport you!

Hope we’ll get to see your hikes through ‘woods of ND’ next time without rain becoming spoilsport! I’ve done a few hikes in dry mountains of Southern California, not so dry mountains of Northern California, lush green mountains here in India.. I’ve spent good money on waterproof hiking gear from North face, Merrell, Keen etc.. From my experience, “Rain decides to play spoilsport when we don’t wear Rain gear and it decides to ignore us when we wear Rain gear”, so my waterproof hiking gear hasn’t seen much of water 😉

I did a hike the next day with no rain. Part of the trail has been flooded for the past few years, but this year the drought enabled me to enjoy it! Here in North Dakota, I don't normally need to worry about rain, so it was a bit of a surprise on this hike!

Nice video! It’so interesting to see what nature is like in your part of the world. Ice Age glaciers was a recurring thing at those latitudes as I understand it. Left a low land and random rocks and the rest was ground finely, even to clay in places. Obviously. Those berry bushes looks like the bushes we planted for a hedge where we used to live. The berries are mild and sweet, and coveted by birds. However, they also messes with their digestive system, unfortunately!

I'm a bit south of the glaciers...but not very far south. And you are right about the amazing legacy left here...

If you teach yourself to draw you could record all these places and things (those trucks!) in a journal - with fountain pens!

I used to draw. For some reason, I quit drawing, aside from occasional quick sketches. I have thought it would be fun to draw scenes in my traveler's notebook or even a larger sketchbook if I developed real talent.

I am going to surprise you: there are four in North Dakota. This state isn't as flat as people think! (OK, a lot of it is, but some parts aren't.) 1. Frost Fire Park near Walhalla 2. Huff Hills near Mandan 3. Bottineau Winter Park near Bottineau 4. Thrill Park in Fort Ransom

It's a beautiful area. I was slightly tempted when I saw that Walhalla has an opening for a science teacher....

Could you pick some of those berries and make them into an ink? Make up your own label! I have a little Subaru Cross Trail that looks like it should be able to fit down there. Grand Fall Rapids. ATVs does that include trail bikes or is that frowned upon?
@WaskiSquirrel
@WaskiSquirrel 3 жыл бұрын
I suppose I could try... I don't know if even a compact car could handle all of the trail. Parts of it, certainly. I just know I would never dare take my Toyota on it! ATVs in the US usually refers to small 4-wheel drive vehicles with no cab. They allow trail bikes and, according to the website, the maximum width is 150 cm.

If your camera is in a bag, what did you use to make the video? Or did you stick the lens through the opening? It didn’t say who David Lynch was. I had some trouble finding any information but I came across this. www.kvrr.com/2017/02/02/remembering-david-lynch-story-behind-school-badge/ Ha. The Mounties wouldn’t be involved in pulling you over if you accidentally crossed the border, unless you had a trunk full of automatic weapons-it would be the provincial police or even the local police. I did spend many years in an Ontario gulag, it was very nice and the health care was excellent.
@WaskiSquirrel
@WaskiSquirrel 3 жыл бұрын
A bit of both. I used my cellphone, and also the camera poking through the plastic bag. Your article about David Lynch was interesting. I don't know if it's the same person, but interesting.... Good to know that the Mounties wouldn't be arresting me. The contents of the Camry are pretty boring anyway... And, yes, the Ontario gulags are very gentle...
