I visited Icelandic State Park, near Cavalier, ND. It's a beautiful place near a beautiful town. Cavalier: do you need a science/math/computer science teacher? You could tempt me! www.parkrec.nd...

Glad you enjoyed! This beautiful spot was not on the agenda, but it was suggested to me the day before, and turned out to be the highlight of the trip!

Beautiful scenery on that trail! And the historic buildings are charming. We went hiking on Friday in Castlewood Canyon State Park…. There’s just no substitute for getting out in nature. It’s nourishment for body AND soul!

I agree! I just spent the last hour and a half, until it got too hot, pulling weeds in the garden and I'm very chill now and ready to do other work.

It really is beautiful! If I get kicked out of SW North Dakota, NE North Dakota holds some very real charms.

@@WaskiSquirrel LOTS of drugs in that area now. Got my parents out of there in 2020. Exclusive Brethren cult is also a huge presence in that area. Thomas Wolfe was right: "You can't go home again."
@WaskiSquirrel28 күн бұрын
@@4gma59 I'm sorry to hear that. And I saw some religious presence there that I didn't like. And Thomas Wolfe was very much right. I barely recognize my own hometown.

If there'd been some sort of hills, would have looked like the area I grew up in, in Hillsdale County Michigan. Thanks for the bout of nostalgia!
@WaskiSquirrel3 жыл бұрын
You bet! The landscape to the north has more hills, but this landscape is definitely not a stereotypical North Dakota either!

Man what a great video reminds me of some of New Jersey.

So, so gorgeous. Definitely makes me miss the Puget Sound. A couple of summers ago, when we were able to go to Flathead Lake, I was so excited when we got into truly western Montana, and began seeing all of the ferns and green undergrowth. We just don’t get that in Helena. Like you, too dry! I’ll put Icelandic SP on my list for someday. So beautiful!

Impressive that this reminds you of Puget Sound! When we live in dry areas, we do miss so much incredible scenery.

Great video thanks for all the work. And for kickstarting my thoughts about doing some hiking in our own state parks. So, why is it called “Icelandic” State Park? Seems like Iceland is a bit of a “Far Piece” to the NE of ND. Loved that church with all its decoration on the outside.
@WaskiSquirrel3 жыл бұрын
A lot of the immigrants to this part of the state were from Iceland, most importantly including the family that donated the land that became the nature preserve. And, yes, that church is quite something compared to the country church I used to attend.

Very nice scenery. It does look like upstate NY rather than North Dakota, but I don’t know what ND is supposed to look like. I did finally get the answer to a decades old question of whether it’s PEM-bin-ah or pem-BEAN-ah.
@WaskiSquirrel3 жыл бұрын
You are right! And, to be fair, I am sharing the North Dakota pronunciation. Who knows how other people pronounce it!

That 'reedy' plant is called Snake grass or horsetail. From a time before dinosaurs. As kids, we used to pull them apart at the joints and put them back together.
@WaskiSquirrel3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm more used to the horsetail ferns I showed elsewhere which have a lot of frills.
