Hiking Pet Peeves

Almost 250 miles of trail is on Bog Bridges. People tell you about their gear, especially light gear not to brag but to try to justify their purchase. When they don't find a lot of people carrying the same gear, they subconsciously think that they bought wrong. Pet peeve: people that complain about snoring. Non-snorers are no better than snorers. You should never change your trail name. It makes you look like you're hiding something. There are a lot of people who sleep with their food. I've had mixed feelings about this but I also have never seen anyone who sleeps with their food have a bear problem. People should NEVER do anything but get water at a water source........ever! Summer camps are a double edge sword. If they stay in the shelter, then there is no room for anyone else. If the leave the shelter open and camp, there are not many other camping sites left for anyone else. They do tend to be on the loud side. Also, when I thru hiked, 1990, 2002, and 2008 the hikers never went to bed until around 10:30 or 11pm. Most of the time we were also up and out of camp by 5:30 to 6 am. I don't know why today everybody is in bed at 8pm. On my thru hikes, there were NO shuttles. You either hitched or walked everywhere. I never thought about not having sidewalks. This is by NO MEANS A CONTRADICTION to our video, I am just pointing out how much things have changed over the years. Your video's are killer Bad Bat! I love watching them. THANK YOU!

Agree on the snoring - some don’t know they snore & others try not too but be prepared. Bring earplugs they are lightweight! Put in ear buds. If I ever thru hike & I know I snore badly…..I’ll try to stay away but if need a shelter I’ll have a bunch of earplugs to handout

I actually carry extra earplugs to hand out to other hikers because I know I snore! I don't usually stay in the shelters, for multiple reasons, but when I have to tent close to others, I warn them before they set up and if they set up close, offer earplugs. :D

I'm in canada. Ya come on up, it's nice here. This video is so fun and funny. Thanks for making me laugh. My pet peeve is when you've been hiking all day and haven't seen anyone in days and don't expect to see anyone and a hiker comes up behind you, doesn't say anything, and suddenly pushes past you on a narrow part of trail, touching your body. Idk how many times I've screamed because I thought a bear or moose was about to attack and bite me because something started pushing and shoving me over off the trail from behind! I mean common guys, if you're coming up behind someone don't sneek up on them all quietly. That's super creepy! Just say "Hey there, hiker behind you. Hello. Passing by on the left". I would say about 1/3 say something and the rest just creep behind you following you for a while then bust past pushing and shoving. It's freakin weird behaviour. And I have CPTSD so it really traumatizes me when you do this people. I've actually started carrying mace for saftey at home (I'm in a busy city and have been attacked before) and I'm probably going to bring it hiking now. So, I'm sorry but if you guys do this to me you're going to get maced first and questions after. Tbh Idk if you're a wild bear or human when you don't say anything and are creeping on up behind me like that and then start touching and shoving my body.

I also hate it when people try to interact with my service dog. Even though he has patches all over his bag, people are like "is he freindly, can i pet him" etc and start cooing and waving and making eye contact and bending down to him. All the things it says right there on his patches not to do! They never ask me "hey i see you're wearing a pack of 30lb and have broken disks in your back and a torn mcl and have hiked 20km today and hydrated. Can i get your dog excited and pull you over from his leash so that your back totally breaks and i bust your mcl in half again?" They never ask me if I am ok with them interacting with my service dog. They never ask if my dog can take a break from his duties. So you all know, if the dog has service patches visable or is around you in public, the dog is working. Leave him alone. Don't make eye contact. And deffinatly don't wave, don't coo at him, or talk to him, or take pictures and or start exciting the dog and distrscting him from his job. That's not cool. You're being a nusance and likely hurting the disabled person the dog is serving. The person doesn't have the energy to take care of you, plus themselves and their dog, just leave them alone.

Great vid, BadBat. 👏 I'm shocked to hear of the rude comments you overheard and received while on trail. Humans are so ignorant. To answer your question - My Hiking Pet Peeve is people who play their personal music out loud on device speakers while hiking. DON'T DO IT!!! Why? #1. It's the WILDERNESS and it has its own soundtrack. #2. It can be highly dangerous to wildlife if they are frightened or confused by sounds which interrupt their own auditory sensibilities (which can lead animals to an unprovoked attack on you and those around you out of fear or feelings of threat). #3. It is absolutely disrespectful to other hikers who seek a quiet wilderness experience (i.e., you are Disturbing the Peace). So, if you MUST listen to music, put on earbuds or headphones but remember: You need to stay aware of your surroundings at all times and wearing ANY device that blocks that awareness is a "NO-NO!" 📻🙅🏼‍♀️🆘

People who have dogs off-leash, then their dog charges you and they say “don’t worry, he’s friendly.” If you insist on bringing your dog on a public trail, keep it on a leash please! And remember… LNT applies to yer doggy too!

Very insightful, I’ve seen a lot of hiking videos and yours stood out with genuinely new thoughts. I worked in education at a university for 35+ years your “I’m just a day hiker” quote hit home for me.I would always tell students don’t tell me you’re just a freshman, undergrad or whatever stage you’re “only” at. Look dude, maybe you’re early in your career but you’re not “only” anything. Don’t disparage your journey because soon enough you will be my boss!

I agree with MOST of these... I will agree to disagree though on the asking questions about your hike. Don't think that every question about your start time or your gear has anything to do with judgement sometimes (at least in my case) as a section hiker I just want to connect, socially as a section hiker to those I want to connect with. Thru hikers, section hikers, day hikers I want to talk all things trail so I can connect with "my people" while I am out there since I only have a limited time out there anyway. I hope that makes sense. I like to ask "how is your journey going?" and let the conversation go from there or "what has been your favorite section so far?". This is what I usually lead in with and then I just enjoy whatever it is they want to share. Thanks for the videos BadBat, pet peeves should be discussed as some of the ones you mention are pretty serious like the bear hang too close to camp issues. No bueno. Thanks again!

People who cannot control their dogs hiking without a leash. People who show up late to camp and make a lot noise for an extended period of time as though no one else was trying to sleep a few feet away. People who get all bent out of shape when you tell them you don’t have a trail name. People who rush to pass you, then walk slowly right in front of you.

I've learned in my life that if someone asks me something that's a "pet peeve" for me, I don't have to answer them, or I can straight up lie to them. You don't owe them anything, and it's a personal boundary thing. People ask leading questions - the person asking you when you started your hike, they ABSOLUTELY want you to ask them when they started their hike, so you could counter the question with a question - then they will answer first, you'll know, then you can tell the truth, or again, straight up lie. Obviously, you started the day after them - or was it the day before? And your weight, maybe you've lost ten pounds, or whatever it may be in kilograms, see if an American can figure that out - anyway, you catch my drift. My point - the people that are messy aren't going to be lifetime companions anyway, so just go with the flow and don't let them screw up your flow with the B.S.

Thanks for mentioning section and day hikers and giving them proper due. I am one of them‘just’ day hikers 😂 I don’t feel any less because of that but met some through hikers on Appalachian Trail and definitely have great respect for their effort. Yeah, it's just a different beast, likely that a day-hiker has done the same day-hike a few times, knows the rocks, knows the plants and trees, the surrounding area and history, seen it at different times of the year ...through-hikers have a longitudinal view of the AT, day-hikers have a cross-sectional view of an area.

Best thing for trail magic: cash. It's lightweight, and the hiker can use it for whatever they want/need when they want/ need. If you find yourself in a survival situation, you can use it for fire starting material. My peeve: finding trash left in the wilderness that should've been taken out.

As a trail maintainer, I hate it when people poop on the trail. ( literally on the trail. ) cleaned off so much human poop just sitting on the trail. My theory is a jerk gets mad at his tramily, goes ahead and then takes a dump. Gross. Second is people not taking out their trash. On my water runs, I would fill the bed of my truck! Post offices let me use their dumpsters. Ugh.

Hi!! I hike walk every day here in Naperville Illinois on a river walk. My pet peeve is when people walking take up the entire trail walking slow next to each other and I have to walk off the trail cause they won’t move over! 😢

Good stuff Bat! Everyone does their own hike used to be a common theme on the AT, sorry to hear people are bragging on their pace or ragging on others. Unfortunately common courtesy and common sense (several times you mentioned this one) seems missing all over the place. As for walking at night on roads a small piece of reflective tape on your pack weighs nothing and makes you visible. Enjoying your post trail videos. Hope all is going ok for you!

I'm new to hiking. I've been out exactly twice. first time I camped alone. Second time there were lots of people in camp including one thru hiker. I was the only one who hung his food away from camp. Ther rest either hung it next to their tent of kept it in their tents. And yes I did see a bear less than a quarter mile from camp so I knew they were in the area.

Thirty plus years ago I went with my camp to Shenandoah. That experience changed my life. I wound up joining Americorps, FS, and then becoming a teacher who takes kids outside. Now when I see them, I am so so happy the kids are on a trail and not a phone. Bare minimum, they are all future voters!

Food in camp/tents is by far my biggest concern. Just because you haven’t experienced animals tearing your camp apart doesn’t make it not real. I’m planning to walk the AT in 2 years and will avoid shelters like the plague because of the number of people not properly dealing with food.

Dogs off leash at camp sites and shelters in the early morning while you're trying to cook breakfast/pack up. Squatters and townies who sexually harass or intimidate a solo female hiker. People talking down about my speed on week one. I'm not trying to get hurt. I love the PA rocks, it's a great challenge, so it annoys me when people complain. What do they expect in the mountains? If you want an easy path, go to the town park. People judging food choices. Sometimes I'm too tired to cook and i absolutely crave the whole bag of walnuts. 😂 It's a beautiful walk though. I'm enjoying it anyway!! 😅

Hiking pet peeve: and disclaimer first - I love people, and if someone wants to hike with me for a bit and chat that is okay but just please be considerate ❤. 1. When you are in a big group and someone is hiking faster - just let them zip by. Puh-lease!!!! If you don’t I am just going to scream TRACK and freak everyone out (just kidding - but I do want to 😂). 2. If you are happily ambling along and then hear me coming - It’s not a race - I am not racing you. They need to be responsible for their issues. Snoring cuts through earplugs and is a nuisance and highly disruptive.
