I love working with wood, there are some wonderful changes sometimes in the grain and colour. I think this video shows very well some of the lovely changes, thanks for sharing this with us. Congratulations on the commission for your local council, you should be very proud a fitting tribute to your work.

Hi,thanks for watching and supportive comment. I prefer natural colours without stains as it suits my style and as you say it makes the grain pop out. Andy.

I'm really looking forward to your bardic staff. I'm messing around with pyrography on Celtic knotwork and Viking runes, working out how to transfer the design to a stick is just another puzzle to enjoy solving.

Hi, I am no artist so I find pictures as a reference then adapt and add my styling. It may take a long time for me to get what I see and can translate to the stick with many rubbing outs and new starts. I wish I was gifted but useing wood burning as a method of decorating a stick also adds something different from any inspirational picture you may be useing as a basic tool to transform a picture to your style and adaption. All the best and happy crafting. Thanks for watching,Andy.

I believe ultra violet light and the the exposure to it, will darken the wood over a period of time. Hence the lighter or darker colouration. Your hiking sticks have a natural beauty (Just like yourself!). They too, have a clean shaven, recently hair cutted appearance. Yes, I take notice notice and devour every detail! Bugger! Time for my meds again. Goodnight and thanks for your time and effort!

That’s a really interesting video, I’ve just found your channel and will be definitely watching a lot more! I’m a total beginner but I love finding pieces that give you a whole range of colours and shade just through the natural wood. Do you use any waxes at all?

Hi, no, I don't use waxes as I get asked for oil finished sticks at the moment. In the past, customers have asked largely for varnish but that seems to have stopped. Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.

I’ve got a batch of thumbsticks in my garage rafters from the Lake District a few years ago, I just need time to get them out to finish.

With wood being a natural product natural variance is to be expected and valued. I try lots of different types of wood and bringing out the colour and grain is the whole reason I love doing it. Just finishing off a couple of short walking sticks and have used Pink Ivory Coming up almost red for the head of one and African Blackwood (rich black with a hint of tawny grain)for the other. I use teak oil or clear gloss yacht varnish. Can't understand why people would dye stuff, I love the individuality of each stick but then I'm not selling stuff (yet) mine are given to friends/family.

When it comes to sticks I'll try almost anything and love learning and working through problems. I'd never call myself a craftsman though.🙂 @@hiddenvalleyfootpaths2561

Wonderful work. I wonder if termites or other types of pests are an issue at all? Or is that something that you would notice straight away and not keep the stick ?

Hi, It's a basic check all over for insect damage and I reject any suspicious looking wood. Because steam straightening heats the wood up to hot temperatures that also would kill insects. Out of interest I did a hike to a witch's grave and over to the museum of witchcraft a few videos back. It might be of interest to yourself. Thanks for watching and commenting. Andy.
