This was a great video! We do many hoist rescues a year here on this very trail. Usually it is at the 7,600-7,800' level, which looks from your video the mile 10 area, the rock scramble. Many folks get disoriented by the rocks, no prominate trail. Also, in the winter that snow and ice ledges people out. No fail at all, that is a humbler!

You made it to the tram so that's good. I was the Coachella Valley Hiking Club leader who started this hike 30 years ago. It's extreme for sure. We trained hard for it. Long weekend hikes with significant elevation gain.

Hi Ray, I'm looking to do this hike (at least the Skyline to the tram! hope the whole thing) in the first week of October while I'm nearby for a conference. Going to train hard and prepare. Where can I find a hiking buddy potentially?

@TheYmmij777 maybe check with Coachella Valley Hiking Club. We used to do it annually in the 90s but I moved away over 20 years ago.

Looks real hard....what did you do to prepare for hike? Don't know if I will try this one....

So I failed because of hubris and sloth. I had a month prior to this hike done Whitney and before that San Gorgonio, San Bernardino, etc. BUT - for a month plus I sat on my ass and then attempted this hike. Two other factors contributed to failure, I ate poorly (big burrito) the night before, and I didn't get enough sleep. My ass was kicked by Rescue Box 1. I have since moved back East but this hike is still on my mind to complete. I think that as long as you train for it and properly prepare before the hike, you'll be fine. I'd recommend San Gorgonio first, and then the other routes up San Jacinto - I found Marion Mountain to be challenging. This hike is beautiful, the sunrise over Palm Springs is amazing. I highly recommend training and then giving it a try. Make sure you are comfortable with the snow levels this year, I am sure some of the trail is ice and snow right now.

I love the comments at 3:03. I read a prior commentary where somewhere along this trail you will sit down and wonder why the Fk am I doing this, well at this point I am sure this was his thought too! LOL. Mine was about an hour above flat rock in the mesquite staircase. It took us about 9 hours and change. Practice practice practice is all I can say. I still have emergency 5 gallon buckets hidden at 2500/3500/4300. My only sadness is we all pushed to get to the top, and didnt smell the roses...

How many hours did it take to get to the tram?

Enjoyed the video. Just to make to the tram station is an accomplishment. Most people shouldn't even attempt this hike.

Getting to the tram isn't anything to be ashamed about! About a mile and a half of gain ain't shabby!

Thanks Brian, yeah it is a heck of a climb. Hoping to conquer it this fall before the snows.
