@@WanderwithXander Probably this August, if the weather looks good and my wife is ok with trying the riskier sections. How many parts of the trail stand out in your memory as being very sketchy? From your video it looked like there were only 2-3 very steep/narrow sections where you had to be extra careful.
@WanderwithXander
@WanderwithXander 2 жыл бұрын
I would say that there is only one stretch which is legitimately sketchy/scary and thats the climb to the tannhorn. Other parts you have to be careful but is not really scary in my opinion. If you can to the Tannhorn part, you can do all the parts!

Great Job! actually tried to do this hike yesterday but the weather was getting worse and it was raining couple times so changed back at Augstmatthorn. However in your video it is not Augstmatthorn - you need to move further to the Brienz direction and there will be Augstmatthorn. If you check the table on you video - you will see that it was not this mountain. But a lot of people believed that it was this when i did it yesterday))

Do not underestimate swiss hiking trails. Swiss people are seriuos about hiking. The times indicated on the signs are for fit people with little baggage and few pauses. As soon as the marking is in red and white, there is often a real possibility to fall to death. Blue and white is for experienced alpinists only. Mind the weather. Congrats on successfully completing the trail, I am sure you slept well that night.

Thanks for this! Awesome job & an insanely beautiful hike! Was planning to do this hike this summer but I tore my ACL/MCL/meniscus skiing in March. @WanderwithXander
@WanderwithXander 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! Aah thats a shame, hope you recover fully soon. Sounds like a nice goal to work towards! I think both have their benefits. I would suggest to start near Brienz because the highest point is there as well, so you decline a bit more once you're all the way up. But a downside, I found the Tannhorn climb way more scary from the Brienz-side. I did that one in 2020, if you want to check it out. So both have their arguments haha

@@WanderwithXander I do A LOT of alpine hiking - at least one tour a week on average. I just did a tough tour today that is considered fairly challenging - Hengst near Sörenberg - VERY different from any other tour I've ever done (you might want to look it up and consider it for a tour yourself). Depending on your chosen route, it can take up to 8 hours or more, but that's just a warm up for you guys! The tour is T3+, buts it's not just for a few minutes, like most tours. This one is T3+ for quite a long time, so concentration has to stay high all the time. I'm fairly certain you'd want those heavy boots. Mine were a life saver today. But you guys are on a whole different level - I would never be able to do such a long tour like you did. I also wouldn't enjoy it. My joints and other bio-modules start giving out after 7 - 8 hours max. Probably that's why I don't do ultra anything these days... :-)

@@WanderwithXander My MO is based on NOT living in the mountains: I drive in from the flatlands by evening, stay overnight in a low-rent hostel or Berghaus, ALWAYS start walking at between 6.30 and 7 am, so I usually have the moutain to myself and meet the first people on my way down. I'm usually back by around 2 pm and back home before the evening rush hour. Then a few days (much needed) recovery - repeat. @@WanderwithXander Thank you for the response. I thought that the Forerunner was not appropriate for hiking but it seem that it is. Good to know. So to explain the heart rate I will make a "copy and paste" that I took on the web site of Polar (I have a Polar watch)it will be easier to understand. WHY SHOULD YOU CALCULATE YOUR MAXIMUM HEART RATE? Heart rate-based training enables you to run at the right intensity in order to reach your training goals. In other words, training smart is better than always training hard. Training intensity is divided into five heart rate zones - from very light to maximum intensity. The heart rate zones are calculated as percentages of your maximum heart rate. To determine your personal heart rate zones, you first need to know or estimate your maximum heart rate. For example, within heart rate zone 4, you’ll be training at 81-90% of your HR max and increasing your maximum performance capacity. Alternatively, at heart rate zone 3 (which is usually your average heart rate running), you’ll be training at the slightly reduced level of 71-80% of your HR but you will still be improving the efficiency of blood circulation. To determine your personal heart rate zones, you first need to know or estimate your maximum heart rate. So basically, you take: 220 - your age. If you are let say 30 years old, it is 220 - 30 = 190. So 190 pulsation per minute is your 100%. Then you calculate your heartbeat with the rule of 3 to have the result of your heartbeat in %. Exemple, if your heartbeat is 160 pulsation per minute. You say: 190 = 100% 160 = x. And x = 84,21% This method permit to follow intervalle. So if I am near 100%, I know that my heart beat is really high for my âge. I am used to visualizing my heart rate in %. And that why I was wondering if Garmin propose the lecture of the heartbeat also in % . Polar does it but and think that Apple and Garmin don't do it. Anyway, you advise the Forerunner for Hiking ? Because I want to change my watch. And to respond to your question, no, I could NEVER to this trail because I would DIE for sure on the trail especially on the ridge sections ! I don't understand how you and other people can to these sections. It is INCREDIBLE. I would DIE for sure. You have all my admiration !!! So tell me if you advise me this watch or not after having experience with it. Thank you again for your response 🙂

No worries! Happy to reply! Aah I see, yes I would totally recommend this watch. It shows the heart rate zones and exact heartrate, but not in percentage. Maybe this will take a little to get used to but its very easy to adjust I think. I used the watch on the tour du mont blanc, my ultra marathon and a lot more hikes and liked it a lot. Good battery, excellent GPS, nice statistics. Very happy with the performance!

@@WanderwithXander I have done it several times. Including two times in winter with crampons. The dangerous hikes are in the high alps. The harder grat counts as the foothills to the alps. But its great nevertheless, beautiful video 👌
