Garmin inReach devices offer robust communication and location-sharing features for outdoor enthusiasts. With an inReach consumer plan, users can see other inReach users on a map and send group messages, similar to using walkie-talkies. To utilize these features, users need their inReach device address, which can be found on the Explore website under "My Info" and "Contacts." This address looks like an email and allows for direct communication between devices.
For direct messaging, users can send a message from their inReach device to another by selecting the inReach address icon. This enables seamless communication wherever the recipients are. Additionally, inReach addresses can be used for preset or check-in messages, allowing users to send updates to multiple recipients, although replies will be individual.
For true group messaging, users must use the Garmin Messenger app on their phones, selecting phone numbers rather than inReach addresses. This setup allows up to five people to engage in a group chat, with all replies visible to everyone, mimicking typical text messaging apps. Location sharing is another powerful tool; users can share their locations, enabling others to navigate to them using devices with routable maps or the Garmin Explore app for route plotting. This feature is particularly useful for group coordination in remote areas.
