is that really the mentality to have when you only really have one world class center back in Stones and maybe two world class full backs in Trent and Walker. We don't have the defenders to play so direct. Our center backs are either hugely inexperienced at that level or just not on par with the other top 4-6 nations.

He's spot on, Southgate is absolutely winging it and has been for years. Proved in the Euros final at Wembley that he hasn't got a clue tactically, and deployed the same dross against Serbia. Just sit back and soak up pressure for most of the game. Complete waste of the talented individuals we have, because the manager doesn't know how to form them into a team that plays to its strengths.

Graeme - "No ones blaming the manager"...Speak for yourself, does he not recognise that after we got the goal we reverted to a low block handed possession to Serbia and played 60 minutes hoping for breakaways to try and make something happen..That's the coaches tactics Graeme just like they were in the final of Euro 2020 against the Italians and that's why we lost and we will lose again in the knockout phase because our manager is a safety first pragmatic defend the lead dinosaur.

I was watching this game from Germany and they had of course the pre-match discussion. The main point that all 4 agreed on was just that. England has brilliant individual players (they have the most expensive squad)..but as soon as they put that white shirt on, they always seem to play ultra-conservative.They are too predictable...they don't play with heart and soul and are not able to take risks.---(like I say "get in there"), Kane? joke, Foden?Trent ? joke I put this down to the manager because it's his job to "fix" this. The best teams in the Premier League all have had non-English managers, Guardiola, Arteta, Hürzeler, ten Hagen, Klopp etc, The last top manager from England was Ferguson...no wait, he was a Scot.

I’ve said it for years all England’s problems derive from Southgate’s fundamental flawed approach. He plays not to lose, rather than plays to win. He is far too pre-occupied first and foremost with worrying about the opposition. From the outset your primary objective is to take a game of football to the opposition and concentrate on winning the football match, once this approach has been achieved, only then do you consider where your opposition may cause you a problem and tweak your game-plan. Southgate has it all back to front.

For half an hour, England looked as good as any team in the tournament. Then they get a bit tired and realise they have a lead to protect so they resort to just booting the ball away any time it gets near their penalty area. Once this default modus-operandi sets in, they cannot click out of it. Tournament after tournament this happens. No other nations do this (outside the home nations). The great teams manage the game properly when tired. England don't and never did.

For me, have Jude and Rice sitting, Foden ahead of them and Palmer on instead of Trent. That solves our balance issue and makes use of Foden in his preferred position without nullifying the effectiveness of Bellingham. Bowen and Gallagher are excellent subs for 2nd half shoring up, energy and getting us out when under it. We have the players, it's just the balance. We'll get there.

Oue best player sitting, three no10's and no width? Gordon for Foden would make sense and Wharton for TAA would sort out balance but biggest issue we have novice centre Half's, no left backs, too many 10's and one proven midfielder. Southgate is afraid to make changes, so whatever talent he has on the bench is irrelevant. He picked the predicted team because he’s scared to do otherwise. Calling up Shaw is an example. He’s injured, Trippier is injury prone, and he plays Trent in a midfield role instead of starting Gallagher. Kane didn’t touch the ball for 45 minutes, off day, should have subbed him 60 mins. Southgate hasn’t the balls to do that. Bellingham played his heart out but was knackered earlier in the game. Should have been subbed earlier to keep him fresh. Lots of games coming, 5 subs per game, could have brought Palmer in. Foden off day also. Gordon should have been subbed on when the game needed more energy. Foden out wide doesn’t work very well.

For me watching another tournament with Southgate as HC is like watching that film Groundhog Day - the quality of our squad gets better and better yet this boring hard to watch hang on approach and fixation on trying to hold on to one goal leads against teams we should be totally dominating is a very very hard watch and in every competition when we find out that we can’t hang on to the lead when we play the better teams we lose to them - he has been incredibly lucky because the draw for each competition has meant we have not faced a top four side until very late on which has given Southgate a record that I think paints a false picture of his true ability - he was an average player and a failed club manager and given the quality of the players he has to choose from I don’t think he has done anything to shout about in terms of his record with England - we need a change and the sooner the better

Last caller,. Alex, seems to be missing the point. Of course the media hipes up thier team. But what we saw yesterday was England starting well and then sitting back after scoring. While it worked for this game, if you try to do that for the whole tournament you will be found wanting in the latter stages. We want to see England press on after scoring and try to get a 2nd and 3rd before sitting back and relaxing with the job done. We have so many talented young players who will be begging to express themselves on this stage. I think the feeling is the manager is not getting the best out of what he has. He is getting the job done, but seems to be wasting the wealth of talent available.

England sitting back is only a natural reaction to starting on a high note so it’s recovery. The biggest issue is Southgate doesn’t or leaves it too late to react to the flow of the game wrt to subs or tactical issues on the pitch. Foden had no case to be in that game in the 2nd half. An outlet like Gordon or Watkins could have helped relieve pressure from the Serbs, but it’s baffling how ordinary fans can see the issues & the manager and his coaches can’t. Ivan Toney would have been a useful counter to the Serb’s physicality and winning 2nd balls. Don’t get me started on the Trent inclusion. Like the first caller alluded to it’s like they are including players because of the name on the back of their shirts

The second guy based his opinion on the end result not the game itself. You can tell with how your team are playing compared to others when looking to the upcoming games and what struggles they will face. It's not looking good, I agree with Mr Vindaloo, you got the talented team there ready, its time to kick their butt into gear and go to work, take risks, charge at the goal, dont play it safe when you're only 1 goal up. This conservative strategy and playstyle from Southgate is taking the sting out of this team. One of the reasons why teams like the 70s Brazil were so good is because they went for it.

Serving us "coma" more like, very poor manager tactically, wasting a great pool of talent,, but his face fits with the FA so it will stay safety first.

Kane was out there doing a rashford no effort in closing down there centre backs he should of been easily taken off a half time,It wasn’t working for foden also and Trent Arnold should never of started.

These pundits love Southgate and blame the players yet everything is Ten Hags fault. Where's the single standards guys. Southgate is mac n cheese without cheese or seasoning

How hard was that first caller trying? Nice one. Also enjoyed Souness saying “we” re England 😂

Bellingham show boating with four jinks instead of passing through to Foden who was stood waving his hands was in a space to move forward and shoot. It's a team game no player can do it on his own.

Have to half disagree here. He's surrounded by other quality players, but the managers tactics were a shambles

Alex what you talking about?? we have the best side again for years...Southgate keeps doing the same thing everytime, we go 1 nil up and then we sit back and hope to defend for the rest of the game. We did it against Croatia in semi's and did exactly the same against Italy in Final...nothing changes with his set up.

Southgate tactics are far too negative. We go one up and we just protect what we’ve got. Best attacking talent for years.

I love Steve's call to kick it off, he was talking absolute waffle, but don't give me Korma, give me Vindaloo is possibly the most iconic thing I've heard in years 🤣 The tournament is still young and you don't start your toddler off on a vindaloo, so perhaps there's hope 🤞

It's early doors and it was a win, at the end of the day, but the signs are already there of the same kind of timid strategy and poor decision making at the business end of the tournament. Nothing I'd like more than for Southgate to prove me wrong, but frankly I'm very confident he can't. As Simon often says, he's simply not an elite manager. Lovely bloke, but we need a ruthless decision maker.

Thats it for another 4 years. England will soon be sent packing despite having the strongest group of individual talent in the tournament and Southgate isn't going to change his 'tactics' any time soon. The Serbia game was awful. A match we could and should have been scoring goals in turned into a 'just adequate' 1-0 win. Southgate's ability to subdue the nation is second to nobody. He probably won't even get sacked.

Right After this Euros whether we Win to Lose. Southgate HAS TO GO. With this type of energy in our team, we need a proactive manager who can see the problem and address it ASAP. SOUTHGATE MUST GO

Talksport or England need to hire that first caller Steve, guy could genuinely inspire them England boys before a game.

Southgate plays not lose, rather than plays to win. With this approach and mindset you don’t win in life, let alone in football.
