Robert Downey Jr‘s performance is a prime example of satire. I love how it was written and performed.

Jay Baruchel doesn't get enough love, he does such a great job as the young idealistic actor, the only one that actually did any research for his role....

You know, Robert Downey Jr. was actually nominated for an Oscar for this movie! He lost to a deceased Heath Ledger (who played The Joker - honestly, he'd have won that award, dead or alive, that performance was gold), but still, like Tugg Speedman said, it's an honor to just be nominated (and I still think it was an Oscar-worthy performance). This movie is one of the best-written comedies of the 21st century. The execution is, at times, a bit flabby (it could be tightened up a bit, but that's always an issue with comedies, where jokes can come before story), but before I saw this, I never knew Stiller was as talented a writer as he clearly is. Also, I can't imagine how hard it was to convince a studio to greenlight a film with a white actor playing in blackface (even given the fact that RDJ is playing a white CHARACTER who thinks it's okay to portray a black character, so the blackface serves an important function in the actual story being told), let alone pull it off with almost no backlash (more people were offended by _Simple Jack_ than they were by Kirk Lazarus).

One of the best and cleverly written comedy film in decades, not to mention the acting from this all star cast. RDJ clearly went all out and did a phenomenal job! Tropic Thunder and Talladega Nights are my favorite comedy movies. They don't try too hard with the comedy like most comedies and it's just legitimately funny. 🤣 Robert Downey Jr, Jack Black, and Tom Cruise had the funniest moments in this movie. This movie had a lot of star power in it with all the big name actors which is one of the reasons it's so good. Ben Stiller did a great job with this movie.

An ridiculously hilarious movie. I don't worry about the black face any more than I worry about the Wayans brothers in the white face for the film "White Chicks." And true to RDJ's dedication to his character, he even did the DVD/BluRay commentary in character. RDJ absolutely nailed his part, but everyone was outdoing everyone else. Tom Cruise, Danny McBride, Nolte, Stiller - even in the small details, like everyone calling the Kevin Sandusky character by different names every time they refer to him. The nerve of RDJ's character to reference 400 years of repression is absolutely epic.

The blackface scene seems to have aged poorly to many young viewers, but the reality is that they were making fun of the actor himself for his cluelessness in doing it. In fact, the entire movie did nothing but mock and ridicule every single aspect of Hollywood from the actors, to the directors, to the studios themselves.
@heldandhold24839 ай бұрын
It has aged just fine. The fact that some younger people don't get what is going on is not the fault of the movie. Tropic Thunder was heavy-handedly making fun of the fact that Hollywood has a shameful history of using white actors portraying other ethnic groups instead of hiring actors that actually were that ethnicity (whitewashing)... dating back to the beginning of movie making in the USA.
@camannwordsmith7 ай бұрын
I don't think it has. I've watched dozens of reactions to this movie, and most reactors (of all ages) get it. Especially Black reactors, who understand that the film is mocking actors who take these kinds of roles. That's why the actual Black actor is there. Black reactors are in on the joke, and most of them will tell you that RDJ's character is by far the best part of the film. Every now and then, there's a person who misunderstands it, sure. But the *vast* majority know exactly what's happening here.

What are you talking about? I said I didn't know the name of the actors' they were playing in the movie. Do you really believe I didn't know who Tom Cruise is, or Jack Black, RDJ or Ben Stiller? Instead of trying to find something to complain about, actually watch, listen, and understand first. I literally named some of the actors in the beginning of the reaction. SMH & that was a joke btw because everyone knows that Tom Cruise isn't that thick in real life.
@konrad143010 ай бұрын
I'm from central Europe, some may argue its eastern part of it. Especially our western neighbours who see us as buch of backwards. But that is not important. Obviously I can't speak about how black people feel or should feel about blackface. But at the same time I very much doubt that Heimdall was black or valkyries from norse myths were black. Also what's more important they made several movies and tv shows especially Netflix, where they race swapped actual real people to black. One is offensive and the other way around is inclusive?
@ItsAlaana10 ай бұрын
I think I understand what you are trying to say but forgive me if I didn’t. It’s very hard not to offend someone in this day and age. Me personally, I wasn’t offended at all while watching this movie or any other movie like this whether it’s being done by a black person or a white person. As long as it’s not being done in a hateful or malicious way, it is fine with me. Especially if it’s for comedy.
