Have you ever seen someone so revered and famous who seems so practical, down to Earth and grounded. Her courage is indubitable and so greatly needed. To pair it with my fave violin concerto the Sibelius might help me finally unlock this music. The Schonberg piano concerto op 45? Is even later and I don't know what it is ; while the violin concerto I someways makes conventional sense. Obviously, I'm reading and hearing it wrong!

Gosh I love these questions! Posting in composers' groups. Good to know he had the same "Ack - I need notes!" feeling as us mere mortals.

This is such a beautiful work, my favorite violin concerto. I grew up with the Zeitlin/Kubelik recording.

I love that in her recording pairing the Schonberg and Sibelius concerti, she says, "I've always thought it was the SIBELIUS that was weird."

What sparked her interest in this concerto. Of course she plays the Berg but im not aware of any recs she has made of this period 1930s in particular besides the Barber or Menotti concerti.

I love Schoenberg and I'm a violinist, but this concerto has been slow to grow on me. Thanks to Hilary Hahn, I can say that I've learned to really love this piece, as she's done an incredible job bringing out the color and dialogue that's in Schoenberg's score. Fun also to see Randy Schoenberg in this context, who really does look like his grossvater!

Very interesting. Did S. really say, when told that a player would need 6 fingers on the left hand, "Very well, I can wait"?

Tonality is a bubble with definite parameters Arnold not only mapped exactly how and where tonal language ends but damned if he didn't build a Space Station out there where he lived out most of the rest of his life . Intrepid cartographer.
