Oh, I think so. He was stern, and arrogant, and a megalomaniac. BUT he had his "good side." My teacher's teacher studied with him for a long time. So some stories came down to me, like this one-- David Raskin, the composer of the song "Laura" & AS's student, once was really depressed because he thought he couldn't write anything beautiful. AS sweetly said, "Vot about Laura? That's one of my favorite songs."

Thank you for following through on this rather wacky idea. The world needs more of this.

According to Allen Shawn's book, Arnold would prepare the kids' lunches before school. He would actually make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and cut them into the shapes of instruments. Now THAT'S hard to picture!

They all look a little like Arnold Schönberg

There is certainly a family resemblance. It's obvious they are Schoenberg's.

Also he gets misrepresented. I read in an article that "He announced that he had invented a system that would guarantee the supremecy of German music for the next hundred years!" (You know the quote) Not true. He made that remark privately in confidence to a student, who then blabbed. He didn't "annouce" anything. And it wasn't like "GERMANY WILL RULE THE WORLD!" It was more like, "Those Frenchies think they're so smart, but we got 'em! Just wait and see!"

Charming :) Maybe he was less of a hard-ass than his reputation suggests, at least with his family anyway....

It seems like more than a few composers had that kind of personality (think: Beethoven, Brahms). Maybe you have to be an egomaniac of some sort when you're in that position and half the (musical) world is probably against you.

So this is what spawns of the devil look like. Not exactly what I expected. I'm kidding, I'm kidding. I don't think I've ever seen an interview with descendants of a composer before. Interesting. I wonder if any of them are musical...it didn't really seem like they were.

The musical world, and the un-musical world too. And probably more than half!!
