Hilary Swank in Boys Don't Cry reminds me of Charlize Theron in Monster. To call it a "performance" doesn't even sound right as Swank, like Theron, truly inhabits her character.

As good and haunting as "Boys Don't Cry" is, it's not a movie you can watch again and again. Simply because it hurts. The whole story about Brandon Teena hurts. It's so utterly heartbreaking that a young man had to die because he was living his life truthfully..

We Christians are struggling with this, although as you know it is condemned by the Scriptures, but is a fact of life .. or nature.... As long as it doesn't hurt anybody else ... I know, it will be the parents but that's how it is, probably the person is born that way due to something specific still undiscovered during conception, so it would be an inadvertent fault because of the genes. It is so unfair, but it's better for future parents to know this could happen: better be prepared to deal with it instead of having someone beloved and innocent live a life of absolute misery. God bless you .

I watched this movie around eight years after it was shown. As a gay kid growing up, I was shaken by this movie. Maybe in the late 90s to the 2000s this movie wasn't seen as much of a statement, but now, it's something we have to see. It is heart-crushing that the story of Brandon Teena continues to this day, just with different names in different countries.

There's not a day that passes that I don't think of Brandon Teena and wish that I could reach into the past and reassure him that he wasn't alone. I am beyond grateful that this movie was made, that Hilary devoted herself to the role, and even more so for those who have watched it and shown understanding and acceptance. Please remember, there are other transgender individuals going through similar, or the same, as part and parcel of their daily life, simply for being who they are, with no help or protection from those who have a duty of doing so. Personally, I am comforted but also terrified, as my own life is almost mirrored in many ways, to Brandon's as depicted in the movie - Comforted that I'm not alone, regardless of how I feel sometimes; terrified by the similar, and very real danger of coming to harm at the hands of others. And I know I'm not alone in that. I don't understand. I'm still the same person. Just because your favourite crisps change their packaging doesn't mean you stop buying the crisps. ;) #WeAllMatter #OneLove

Would've gone with Annette Bening, but I find it hard to argue with this win. Not only is her performance good but it was from a small film and Swank, an unknown actress at the time, practically cleaned up through the awards circuit because of how amazing her performance was. So I have great respect for this win.

The Academy got it right. A win ahead of it's time. Not only did she physically portray the characteristics of a person uncomfortable in their own body, she really shows the physicality of a young man. And her quiet scenes are heartbreaking, as she starts to unravel by the abuse and neglect surrounding her while trying to stay true to themselves.

Why all the hate on this movie? It is an illustration of not only Brandon's story, but the story of all others who suffer hate crimes. Hilary mentioned that at the end of her speech. I believe we all should just accept each other for the beautiful people that we are. I don't care what someone's religion is, their political views, their race/ethnicity, or their sexuality. Everyone is unique, and no one person could possibly hope to truly identify or know another. So don't judge, because you don't know.

When Hilary won this Oscar, she was living in the Lower East Side of New York...she won an Oscar, yet she didn't have a dime to her name. She took her Oscar to the local baker and asked the baker if she could have a loaf of bread...The baker provided her with bread "happily ever after".

While shooting "Boys Dont Cry" Hillary was living in Santa Monica, homeless and in a car which was parked in the parking lot of my work place Kelly Paper 1601 Olympic Blvd S.M As a normal procedure and being MGR. of Kelly Paper one of our ways to show our customers appreciation was offering free coffee and donuts for the " first come first serve " early.birds that were at my door 7: 30 am. Arriving about 7am each morning I notice a vehicle with two women laying down underneath a blanket inside their car. It personally didn't affect our business or customers whatsoever, so I let things go as they did, but knowing who these ladies were. Soon after, surely cold and hungry one of the women in the car decided to enter my place of employment for a look around. One of my emoyeee brought to my attention who this new customer was. " Thats the Karate Girl, she a actress " Crispin Escamilla said quietly in my ear. I immediately walk over to welcome and introduce myself. Standing right next to the coffee machine I offered a cup of Joe and a donut for both her and whoever was in the car ( her mothe) This became a normal and everyday occurrence. Noticing her hair was shortly cut I soon asked why did she cut her once long and flowing hair so short? " I'm working on a new movie Boys Dont Cry. Call it a hunch, a premonition but I asked her for a favor. After you hit the big time and win a Oscar for Best Actress award, just remember us little people ,( me and my crew) who were there with open arms everymorng while living in your car in my parking lot. Im sure you'll do a memorable performance and win. With a big beautiful smile she responded " I wont forget. About a couple of years later I opened up the calendar section of the times, and there she was......nominated for a oscar. Later that same year there she stood again.....but this time ...holding and winning a Oscar for Best Actress in 2000. A proud moment in time. Oh how lovely it woukd have been had she mention me and the boys at Kelly Paper who personally believed in and predicted her amazing accomplishments........I never saw or heard from her again. Did she brake her promise she made to me by forgetting the little people who believed in her? Most likely. But I can't help from wondering while homeless living in a car in my parking lot, has she ever thought or remembered me and my strong beliefs and encouragement I gave her. If this comment ever finds you...I'd like to congrate you in your amazing occomlishments. Oh how lovely it would have been🤔

I greatly respect all of your opinions and value them. But, don't hate me, Annette Bening gets on my nerves, sorry, simply cuz I don't get her. As great as she can be in a movie (American Beauty is her best performance so far), there's still something missing in her acting and I can't quite put my finger on it. Is it complete and total depth? A kind of "holding back"? Still a bit on the surface? She doesn't "penetrate" me as the other actresses we mentioned do. Correct and illuminate me if I am wrong, am I the one whose missing something? Thanks for listening.

tbh I don't completely understand the views of transfers but this was one of the best performances. she played this role soo well. We see a lot of movies where there's men as transfer but we never really saw it the other way around.
