The ironic thing with all these cheapskate video's is the people are really inefficient at actually saving money. They do a lot of things that just cause inconvenience and discomfort without saving money and don't bother learning any basic bush craft that may be useful. There are people who live perfectly comfortably off grid and without money but they educate themselves on how to live off the land and work hard to enjoy basic comforts. It's like these people get more joy out of how hard they make life for themselves than actually saving money.

The egg thing is legit if I remember correctly. Unwashed can last weeks without needing to be kept in a fridge. You just gotta make sure to clean them well before use. But if you're in a situation where you got a working fridge, just clean them. Cleanliness is next to godliness and these people are DIRTY.
@homesteadlegion4419
@homesteadlegion4419 Жыл бұрын
Its true, eggs are sold like that in the eu and they last about 3 weeks at room temperature. Has to do with the natural protection of the egg, if you wash them you destroy that layer and need to refrigerate them.

stuff like this is almost always caused by some form of extreme trauma same thing with hoarders. living in discomfort to pinch pennies is never worth it creature comforts are easily worth the cost when they can have such deep impacts on your quality of life. and the mindset that using something you bought is wasting it never makes sense when i can just say you are wasting air if you aren't holding it in for 30 seconds before you exhale

My dad and his siblings used to share bath water as well because they were borderline homeless. This was back in the late 60's, early 70's. My dad was 9 years old cooking dinner for everyone while his dad worked all day and night and he had to cut an acre of grass with a push mower every week before he was 10 years old. They also had the "delicious" breakfast of rice in water as their cereal (yes they were struggling that bad) and my dad ended up dropping out of middle school so he could get a job to help since he was the oldest so i can understand being a cheapskate to a degree. I never had to go through any of that or worry if i'm gonna eat because my parents and siblings always made sure to take care of us so we didn't have to go through what they did.
@DavidStruveDesigns
@DavidStruveDesigns Жыл бұрын
There's a huge difference between sharing water because you live in a water-poor area of the world, or maybe you're far too poor for the water bills in areas _with_ plenty of fresh water supply, and sharing water simply because you're too cheap to pay the water bill in an area with abundant or at least unlimited water supply. It can be _extremely_ difficult to properly manage water supplies in water-poor areas, and so reusing the same water for multiple uses is a smart way to go. Earthships use this technique to stay "off-grid" and independent. You use the same water to shower/bathe, then perhaps to water plants, and finally any left over is used to flush toilets. There's a reason you can buy special toilets these days that have a sink on top that drains directly into the toilet cistern. It's a clever idea and really every house should do this!

Oh no that ground fridge got to me. 55 degrees is way out of temp range for meat, and to keep it for a week?! Oh Lord. There’s ways to do a ground cellar/fridge correctly but that ain’t it. I understand doing what you got to, but still you got to do some things the right way or as close as possible.

Man the moment Chad started having that inturnal conflict I knew that it was just going to go even further downhill. And even though I don't live in the US (live in Canada) Nikki mention about the American health system and stuff hit hard. The amount of stuff I've heard about medical and dental stuff in the States I can understand when situations like the women did is somewhat normal in certain parts.
@Triple-Four
@Triple-Four Жыл бұрын
Yeah the american health system is really bad. I get $700 a year on dental insurance which is only enough to fix 2 teeth a year. I've had to get 14 teeth pulled because i couldn't afford $20,000 worth of dental work. They'll pull plenty of teeth but won't fix them all because of insurance.

All of this was commonplace when I grew up. lol. That was in the 60’s. They shouldn’t make those boys sleep w them. That’s weird. Only the little bitty kids shared a bath but I can see that if you’re poor the husband and wife might also. We had no central air or heat. We did have one small propane heater and at times we had an electric blanket. The den and kitchen were the warmest cause mom hung blankets in the doorways. My Louisiankinfolk used moss as toilet paper and ate things such as snake when needed. We flushed the toilet w the bath water. We have a lot of good memories and great resilience because of it.

I'm from NYC, and I went on a camping trip with my friends church last year. There was this woman named Shelly, from Mississippi. She's really friendly, but she had this method of washing cups and dishes where she apparently just dipped them into a pot of dish water and dump it back into the pot to use on the next cup. She did this with my sister and said "trust me, it's clean. This is how we do it in the country, city girl."

Yeah the ground fridge _does_ work, if it's done properly. For one you don't really want the door exposed to the outside like they have it. Ideally you have a concrete basement buried deeper in the ground, so there's ground _all around_ the room, and _then_ you store things inside, or inside a further cupboard or insulated box within the basement. Those are the original pantries. It's how things were done in the centuries before fridges were invented, and if you wanted to keep things frozen you filled up part of the room with ice and voila - a room-sized freezer! Some old estate properties around Europe still have "ice houses" on their land, and you'll find most of the usable part of the building is underground. It's actually why so many properties used to have basements in the first place, and why the kitchen was often located there (though usually seperated with thick stone walls) - close to the raw ingredients needed for cooking and it means you don't keep them out of the cool/cold air too long. Over the centuries those basements became smaller and then with more advanced building techniques became pantries that you could have in a ground-floor kitchen rather than a basement.

Chad and I both grew up poor. I had a clean home and food in the kitchen… maybe not a lot food or the most nutritious, but I didn’t go without. I got free lunch from the public school that I went to as well. My Dad knows how to pinch a penny and so cutting corners is totally normal to me.Not sure what I would ever do if I had money because I never have. Chad has had more food insecurity than I ever had, literally not having food at times in his life. He’s talked about how Nate (from Renegade media group) would go out of his way to buy him food if they were hanging out because he knew Chad hadn’t had anything to eat. Thankfully we don’t have to survive that way anymore and things have been good for us. We have a dependable car, an apartment, food in our kitchen, and as you can see here- many items to bring us joy. We’re thankful for that, but we still digging our way up. This woman said she preferred to live like this like it was a “game”, but I’m not so sure. $1,000 a month goes quickly. I don’t think she should be blamed for having to take matters into her own hands with her teeth. It’s an incredibly sad thing to think about, but many folks can’t afford dental care. Until the past few years, Medicaid didn’t cover dental for adults. Healthcare in the US is bs & her knocking her own teeth out to save a buck is the truth poor people have to face.
