FILMED IN HIGH DEFINITION
A place near and dear to my heart: Hillforest Mansion at Aurora, Indiana. It’s one of the finest examples of 19th century Italian Renaissance architecture, nestled in a small town, high above the Ohio River. But most of all, the front was intentionally designed to look like an 1800’s steamboat, as the owner, Thomas Gaff, shipped his goods up and down the Ohio River, on a fleet of them.
The top observation room looks like a steamboat pilot house, and provides a commanding view on all sides. The downstairs east and west wings will amaze you with their rich appointments, meant for elegant events and entertainment. The second floor shows the Gaff family rooms and a small museum within a museum. A truly beautiful place with a rich history, that dedicated tour guides will help you imagine.
I remember coming here, several decades ago, with my Mother. We both simply loved it, as a time capsule, showing how grand and fancy things used to be. A time when people with bold ideas and perseverance, made fortunes, and built amazing homes such as this one. If you love architecture and history, you will absolutely not be disappointed!
Open from 1 April to 30 December of each year, 1 - 5pm, Tuesday through Sunday, closed major holidays.
