On the 15th April 1989, the face of English football would be changed forever. 97 football fans would go to Hillsborough to see Liverpool play Nottingham Forest in the 1989 FA Cup semi-final, and would never return home. What followed was nearly 30 years of scandal, cover-ups and a search for the truth about what really happened that day. This is the story of one of football's greatest tragedies; this is the story of Hillsborough.

I'm not a sports fan, but this disaster is utterly haunting, heartbreaking and an outrageous injustice to the families, Liverpool, Sheffield, all football fans and to all of us. I consider it a crime against the entire country. RIP & much love to all affected.

Peter Jones's summing up of the empty ground at around quarter to 5 on the day, for Radio 2, was heartbreaking, poignant and spot on. The capacity of the central pens was set at 2,200. It actually should have been 1,600. The Leppings Lane terrace had not had a valid safety certificate since 1979. Pens were introduced after the trouble in 1981 on that terrace. 2 just after, and another 2 in 1985. Yet the capacity of the whole terrace, 10,100, wasn't adjusted for the introduction of the penning system. In the summer of 1986, a police inspector brought up the possibility of building separate turnstiles for each pen, thus ensuring that each pen wasn't overcrowded. That idea was rejected due to it being too expensive, according to the club. Semi finals were hosted at Hillsborough again in 1987, yet there was a 20 minute delay of the kick off due to Leeds fans not being able to enter the ground on time because of traffic problems. There was crushing problems at the 1988 semi final on the Leppings Lane terrace. It was a death trap. JFT97.

Experienced a body crush at a football match when I was a young fit man, always thought I would be able to handle any situation but the reality was terrifying as to how hopeless I was and just resolved to being injured. The weight and heat from bodies was unbearable.

I remember this so well. We had The Scum newspaper back then. A decade later I was fully fed up with main stream media and gave it all up. Still not owned a telly since 1998. As a non-fan of football, I really didnt see your final comment coming and burst into tears as the music came in. Nice short and to the point. A big hug to all the fans xxx

The horrible thing is (apart from the fact that this happened at all - it shouldn’t have!) that cpr is almost useless on people with asphyxiation from crush injuries. There’s nothing left to inflate with breath. That people who just wanted to go to a football match should die in such an awful way is testament to the extreme disdain with which authorities treated all football fans back then - and Liverpool fans especially. As proven by the attempts to blame the fans in certain parts of the media and politics afterwards. RIP the 97. I’m not a Liverpool fan but settled down at my cousin’s house to watch the game that day as we both loved football. Those scenes will forever haunt me, and that’s just from tv. What the people went through who were there was pure horror. 💔

I was only 10 at the time of this tragedy but even as a child when it was the main story on the news and they showed those images of the fans being crushed and lying on the pitch it was pretty surreal and you kind of understood what had happened just from the scenes and all the police that were there but for them to then try cover it up by falsely lying in the report about Liverpool fans rushing the gates and being drunk so that they could cover up the truth was just disgusting and I'm so glad that the club the fans and the families finally got the justice that they had fought and campaigned for for so long and cleared Liverpool of any wrong doing after so many years in this horrific event....jft 97 ynwa

Only partial justice has been done. And that was after the Hillsborough independent panel report in 2012 which exonerated the Liverpool supporters of any blame concerning the day of the disaster & that The South Yorkshire Police were to blame as were Sheffield Wednesday FC who never renued the safety licence after the 81 semi final where Tottenham fans were crushed And injured. And also the verdict that overturned the deaths as accident to unlawful killing as of 2021 to 97 people (Andrew Devine died after being on life support for over 30 years in July 2021) becoming the 97th victim. But still knowbody has ever been charged and help accountable for there actions on the day Super Intendant Duckenfield. Bernard Murray. SWFC club safety officer Mackrell. The list goes on. Oh and the sanitization of Police statements on what they did on the day. Many of the normal PC's were forced to change there statements of what they did that day or it was done without there knowledge and a lot of normal Bobbies did help on that day and suffered PTSD just like the Fans. Right from the start of the story of Liverpool fans breaking down Gate C when it was Duckenfield who ordered it to be opened was the beginning of the lie. And story's of drunken tickitless fans arriving at the ground late. Also the media reaction from the Camera men turning there cameras around from photographing the game to taking pictures of dead & dying people crushed up against the perimeter fences ignoring there cries & screams for help ,watching while people's faces turned white and lips And nostrils turned blue. And also in particularly The Sun Newspapers front page headlines about Liverpool fans pocketing the dead ,and assaulting Police officers and urinating on officers trying to help .An absolutely abhorrent and downright lies to smear the fans reputation and to sway public opinions on what they called " The Truth" What the Liverpool fans ,victims & family's got was only that the deaths were unlawful killings and that they were not to blame. This as well as being the longest running legal case in British history is also the BIGGEST cover up and injustice of the highest order. Superintendent Duckenfield should have gone to prison for this as quite a few other high ranking officers should of too. Duckenfield just escaped in the Private prosecution when the jury was hung (that's a 50/50 guilty/not guilty decision made by the dury) and has again I think in 2019 got off again. Please read the Hillsborough Independent Panel Report. It's available online to the public. I am not a Liverpool fan I support Carlisle United. And was 11 years old when the Hillsborough Disaster happened. It was my first year of watching Football and at the time being so young you know it's bad but are too young to understand it. And have your childhood to live. But ever since the 20th anniversary I've taken a real interest and watched just about ever documentary ,footage available. And also read Phil Scratons book "The Truth" and read the entire Independent Panel Report. As well as the survivors story's on the Hillsborough Disaster website that are more horrific than this video and harrowing to read. Without the shear determination of Professor Phil Scraton & later culture Secretary Andy Burnham (On the 20th anniversary) when Liverpool fans erupted into "Justice For tge 96" I doubt we would have had the Hillsborough Independent Panel..so huge respect to both men who fraught for the victims & family's justice. A lot of comments on this video like others are bigated , ignorant or darn right offensive. So before posting your comments do some proper research. And post something of value out of respect for the 97 dead. The victims family's who have fought tirelessly for justice. And those people who have died because of suicide or early deaths due to stress as there are many attributed to the worst sporting disaster in the UK and the BIGGEST misscarage of justice or injustice not only in England but in the entire world in sporting terms. It has nothing realy to do with Football anymore as times have changed and Hillsborough legacy is that we got safe all seated stadiums for the top two Leagues in English Football. But its about human lives ,normal , honest & hard working people who have loved ,lost ,suffered and fought tirelessly for JUSTICE For the 97.

My Dad and I stood on the Leppings Lane terrace, about 2 months before the disaster. To see our team, Manchester United, play Sheffield Wednesday in a First Division game. We were directed to the pen in the corner, by the banked terrace, because the central tunnel was closed off by police and stewards. That was around a quarter to 3. You could see where problems could occur. On the day of the disaster, we were at Old Trafford, watching United getting beaten by Derby County. We heard bits of news about some sort of trouble at Hillsborough and that the semi final was delayed. It involved Liverpool fans we heard by people around us on the Stretford end who had little radios. I always remember my Dad saying " I wonder if it's at the Leppings Lane end? ". As we knew what it was like. Sadly, it turned out we were right.

A catalogue of mistakes and neglect and discrimination lead to this disaster. After Heysel all British football fans were treated like cattle, pens put up in stadiums, which led to the death and injury of people who just wanted to watch the club they loved. And no one has ever faced criminal charges for it. It's a travesty. A few years ago I visited the stadium, not on a match day, the gate was open, so we could see into the Leppings Lane end. Thousands of people herded through such a very small area and 97 to their death. It was haunting. I couldn't believe that decision was ever made to allow that.

I don’t blame the rank and file officers who were out on the pitch trying to rescue the situation and gave honest reports afterward, many noting the serious lack of leadership they were given. It was the police leadership, and especially Duckenfield’s leadership, that caused so much damage. I doubt Duckenfield had ever seen a match in his life, and he simply took on leadership into one of the biggest match on the calendar. He could not handle the situation and became no more than a deer caught in headlights. He ordered the gate opening that caused the crush, then said the fans forced the gate. Had leadership admitted fault at the time, I would at least see them as honorable, falling on their swords as they rightly deserved. Instead, they completely rewrote police reports to hide all blame toward themselves and try to shift it to an easy target: the Liverpool fans. Shameful, absolutely shameful. I don’t understand how anyone in leadership has not gone to jail for their actions that day.
