I had groin pain & my hip was giving way & I was frightened of falling. My GP a sent me to a physio who referred me to the local gym. Luckily they had a well being centre with toning chairs. I lost a lot of weight, then after my trial joined the gym. From there I also started aqua aerobics , learned to swim , do yoga & use the gym. At 75 I am the healthiest I’ve ever been. Have only occasional slight pain, no longer use a walking stick. Have just bought Will's book.

What are toning chairs? Tia 😀
@MayfairMagic2 ай бұрын
@@maryc6091 They're a set of 8 electric chairs with various settings which give you a gentle full body workout lasting 6 minutes per chair. Doctors Physio's & other health professionals can refer people to them. So there are people who've had stokes, injuries , recovering from ops, have Parkinson’s or MS etc can go to get moving again. You are then encouraged to do a gym induction of 6 weeks for harder workout. There are also a set of toning beds. I've moved on from most of that & do the pool activities yoga & the gym.

I had hip replacement surgery 7 weeks ago. I was up hours after surgery, and after 10 days was walking without any assistive devices. Because I felt so good, the hard part was not over-doing it. I needed no PT. I am 73 yo and was fairly fit before surgery. The important thing was having good balance and upper body strength to take the weight off my surgical leg and move around easily in chairs and bed.

That's a great result. It underlines the benefits of getting oneself in good shape before surgery.

Wow, what a brilliant, informative and hugely useful discussion between two experts in their field. I have followed Will for over a year. His dedication and knowledge shines through his books, videos and weekly emails. This video gives extra insights to current thinking and practice from the different perspectives of surgery and physiotherapy and how they interplay. Hope to see more in due course.

This joint (no pun intended) video is excellent. It is me you are talking about. I'm 77. Stopped HRT at 65. Familial osteoarthritis, knee, hip, thigh, lower back pain. Weight gain, slow walking, muscle loss. Difficulty getting in and out of car. Two years ago I was doing the Capital Ring walk around London, two exercise classes a week, and travelling around the world. Now can't face a flight of stairs. Fantastic information. Thank you both.

Hi I'm really interested in your comments but not sure if you mean you were better or worse for being on hrt ? I'm on it and got horrendous hip and groin pain, struggling getting in and out of car and stairs kill me. Please let me know Sue.

@@suepartington8570 If you have progressive osteoarthritis of the hip, HRT isn't going to reverse it. From the symptoms that you have described, my advice is that you should have a formal clinical assessment and up to date radiographs of your hips. Hope this helps.

Thank you both so much for this video. It's made me think about my condition and how to hopefully strengthen my body and joints before any surgery and also lose some weight. You are both so informative and caring.

Thank you So much for acknowledging hormones. I am on hormone replacement and wish I'd started it much sooner. That one study did all women such a disservice, and that needs to change.

Thanks for your comment. HRT certainly helps but the decision to use it needs a careful personalised assessment.

I am a 78 year old man and I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my left hip in July 2020. I started a specific exercise programme using exercises recommended by two specialist Orthopaedic Hospitals and four months later I was back to normal. Since then I have performed these exercises twice a day almost every day and I lead a normal life and can walk five miles or so easily.

Very informative. Like the vitamin D advice. I have osteoarthritis so hopefully will never need a hip replacement. I have an extremely painful shoulder cuff and if I lift my arm too high the pain is unbearable. My gp has given me Naproxen tablets for this and recommended physiotherapy but I can't get on the waiting list just yet (gps are a bit out of touch with NHS waiting lists). I walk daily using a lot of your tips Will. Any advice you can give me. I also find Chinese balm helps. 😢

Thanks for your comments. I'm pleased that you found the video helpful. Shoulder problems are very troublesome. Rotator cuff degeneration and tears usually respond well to an injection of local and steroids, but most GPs don't do them. If you can afford it I would see a private shoulder surgeon for a diagnosis and opinion. NSAIDs like Naproxen and physio are very helpful for most people and definitely worth persisting with this treatment.

I’m confused… Mr. Latham is a surgeon but not an MD? ??
@Lathamhipsurgery2 ай бұрын
MD is the US medical qualification. In the UK universities award Bachelor of Medicine degrees eg BM. Specialists then do professional training and exams that qualify us to work as independent consultants. It’s similar to Board Certification in the US.
