Hello everyone. It's a little trickier than just strengthening. I have watched, followed and did every exercise that Matt recommends for the past 5 years. First, it has helped me become much more flexible as I started with a completely locked left hip. I'm still not able to go for long walks without suffering for a day or 2 afterwards. It's not just your hips when your whole body has been misaligned for many years. When my hips loosen up, then it's my neck and shoulder that hurts. I still do these exercises, but I have started also doing Pete Egoscue's , Pain Free (new edition) book movements. You must relax the tight muscles to get your body back into full alignment. It's working along with the strengthening. I'm 71 and have avoided ship replacement for 6 years.

Me, too. My hip and back will be fine then neck and shoulders start up. I think it's because of the shoulders tensing up to compensate for the pain the hip and back are causing

Get a soft neck brace from Chemist and wear it after walks. Build up time you use it grafually. After use do some gentle movements to relax shoulders. Gently massage opposite hip and leg with no paim. This will ballance the electrics in your nerves.

wow.I am a 77 year old ex-dancer with a PhD. in Dance Education! I am also scheduled for either a cortisone shot or a hip replacement. NONE of my doctors recommended strengthening exercises. And I did not think for myself. I am so grateful. I know these exercises, of course, in fact, I spent 3 years in Paris doing the CANCAN! But I panicked because of the actual pain. I had physiotherapy, which did not help but none of these exercises were prescribed .... The pain only started a few months ago with not having any pain before, which is weird to me. And, I have always done sport, ballet dancing, swimming, thai chi ... and never had any injuries nor pain in my hip.. So their prognostic makes no sense to me ...

@@billiejeanbaccus159 It does hurt but moving helps. Trust. Start slow and be kind to and listen to your body. Discomfort is OK but pain = stop. Pain isn’t bad just a sensation our body uses to talk to us. Note how many reps created actual pain. Take a day or two and try again at 1-2 reps below what caused pain. Use heat, ice etc (whatever works for you) after each set of exercises. Also try micro doses of them by 1-2 exercises during day - waiting for microwave or stove, talking on phone, brushing teeth etc. Bal with ones to loosen and relax hips and pelvic floor muscles - start slow again and listen to your body. Just search YT incl Feldenkrais by Taro. Doing something consistently is better then nothing - within YOUR pain threshold. A few visits for in person assessment w/a physical therapist can help. Google your area and read staff bios or call for their experience w/ YOUR situation. It sounds cliche but relaxing incl meditation etc esp at night and when stressed helps (or laughing even crying). Anxiety/anger triggers cortisol that can incr inflammation. Not bad but whole other topic for you to google. Our mind is very powerful. Hope any of this helps. There is light. FWIW I’ve had chronic pain incl OA for ~25 yrs. It’s taught me a lot. Namaste PS: Never compare. Focus on your body and path.

I agree. I had no idea what was going on with this injury - couldn’t find it! I am (67) and still playing competitive basketball, tennis and also cycling. I’m not a drug-store solution dude. Yes, lots of these injuries happen due to age. But, it happens due to stopping!!! Keep going folks, just stretch and workout more consistently. For cyclists, our sport is a body tightening machine. I work in physical therapy with the geriatric population. I explain to people every day that I will not be able to help the joint itself, but I can strengthen all the muscles around the joint for added stability, increased mobility, and way less pain. Sadly, the majority of people do not want to put in the effort and opt for some form of surgery. Then I see them again in a few months, still in pain (or worse pain), and we go back to square one. The body is amazing and can heal itself from just about anything if given the correct tools.

OMG! I love this video. I was diagnosed with OA in the hip but am told the pain I describe does not coincide with the degree of damage in the joint. PT did not help me...they were way to aggressive and hurt, setting me back even more. I have since determined that I have three things going on with the whole joint (bursitis and tendonitis/ligamentitis included) and am putting together an arthritis management program to help. The range of motion limitation is my current issue to resolve. Your video explained more about what I can do for my issues than I got from anyone else in the healthcare world. I am going to continue stretching...I have problems straightening that joint, but I am definitely going to add these exercises to my workout regimen, perhaps alternating with walking on off days to help me keep moving. Thank you so much for this video. I am subscribing and will be checking out your website.

Hi Matt! I’ve been living with chronic pain since early 2001. I’ve tried injections in my spine and have been on numerous medications. The fact is, these treatments amount to placing a band aide on an severe deep cut. In other words, not efficient enough to truly help. I’ve had physical therapy, but therapists can’t do anything after you go home. I appreciate your approach to pain. Treating the entire body to pain relief that can be attained. You are very knowledgeable for being so young. You seriously look like my son…lol. Most times, I feel that youth is wasted on the young. Not true for you! So glad I found this video. I had been having hip pain for about 4 months. The main cause was violently, improperly rotating my hips open when my golf swing went wrong for a couple months. Secondarily, my pilates class encouraged overstretching hip flexors with your knee on the pilates reformer (sled). I knew if I went to an orthopedist, he'd probably find arthritis (I'm 61) and blame my problem on that, despite the fact that arthritis is long-term degradation and my symptoms came on in a hurry. I tried a bunch of stretches and they didn't help, and sometimes hurt. One day I just decided to rest a dumbell on my thigh and lift my knee (much like the first exercise in this video). I told the orthopedist that it was the one thing that seemed to make things better. His response was that he would expect that to make things worse, not better, and as expected, he blamed arthritis. Lo and behold, i find this video and it recommends exactly that exercise, along with two others that also seem like they will help. I am so glad to learn from this video that there may be a muscle / training way to fix this problem. Thanks for posting it.

Congratulations on feeling better. I have degenerative hip osteoarthritis (worse in the left hip). I have gone through substantial muscle weakening, and I started back in the gym over the summer for increased cardiovascular fitness and range of motion exercise (inclined treadmill, elliptical, rowing machine, and bicycle) in addition to outside bicycling and paddle boarding to offset my decreased hiking ability. I also started weights targeting my hip adductors/abductors/flexors/extensors. They are incredibly weak, and I max out at 30-50 pounds (might not be weak for some, but this is weak for me). I am getting ready for surgery because my pain has increased, I am unable to walk pain-free without a cane, and my quality of life has diminished. I say all this because strength training might not be enough. It is not for me. I will keep strengthening my muscles in preparation for surgery to live my best active life. Good luck!

I have done yoga 3x a week for years (thank goodness) and did lots of physio after the injury. My doc recommended a hyaluronic acid injection but I found Aquafit instead and I am improving! My yoga teacher likes to inform us about anatomy and was talking about hamstrings the other day which led me to do a little research and concluding my Biceps Femoris needs attention (as I sometimes feel heat and pain just to the left of my left knee). Looking for Biceps Femoris stretches led me to you. I've now watched the video above and am excited to have you confirm what I am experiencing ... improvement with attention to muscles. ATM Looking forward to more of your excellent videos and avoiding a hip replacement in the future. Thank you! I would very much like to see your follow up hip video. Kindest regards .... Liz

Thank you. I was told I had hip arthur from xray. That was not the reason for my doc visit and I have never had any pain there. This helps with understanding and to have insight of how to stregthen.

Sounds like great advice. Diagnosed with hip arthritis, despite cortisone injections x 4 & R hip replacement, only have limited range movement and plenty of pain. Only regular exercises keep things going.

I would like a follow along video. I have a shooting pain from top of hip to knee. Xrays and MRI shows no bone issues. Have done some PT exercises that helped but I believe too much sitting in my recliner during covid caused the problem. PT helped but I feel like I need some other exercises and this video seems right. I will definitely do these exercises. Loved what you said about arthritis not necessarily being the culprit. I believe in food as medicine and avoiding Rx. I am 70 years old, vegan and on no Rx. I cured my acid reflux by what I avoid as food and I want to fix this hip problem completely without meds too. I hope this works.

Matt, You make so much sense! I'm trying my best at these exercises but am very tight at inner thigh/groin which is causing alot of knee tracking with pain and severe muscle spasms. Any videos that you can refer me to for this?

I was a ballet dancer for 20 years. I’ve spent years with chiropractors and have done tai chi, qi gong, yoga - but I still find your exercises surprisingly simple and effective! Thank you! ❤

Hi. Would love the follow on video . Had hip replacements for both hips and it’s not been great . I had a damage to glutes on both sides before the operation. I think your video so far has been great so thank you. Got desperate thinking I can never get theses hips better and I am a horse rider . Only ridden once and omg my hips nearly killed me after. But I am determined to get better. Horses are my joy.

These videos are amazing! Thank you! They are so helpful after finding my arthritis diagnosis. I've been in pain on and off for 7 years sometimes limping severely Which is hard as a carpenter since we need to do heavy lifting. These videos are making sense and giving me back control. Thanks! Would LOVE that downloadable video to exercise to. Thanks for all you do!

Matt, thank you for your hard work in uploading these videos. I am 69 with a one year history of a painful right hip. It seemingly started after I started doing hip stretching exercises after being told by a trainer I had poor flexibility in my hips and lower extremities. Never had any bad nor hip pains before. I could have overdone the stretching exercises causing some injury by pushing on with the stretching despite warning pain symptoms. Finally was diagnosed with osteoarthritis by an orthopedic surgeon with x ray showing joint space narrowing and acetabular spurring. No bone on bone yet. After viewing a multitude of videos, I am getting to believe that muscle strengthening is the key. So I have become hooked to your videos, and am very interested in your follow along videos.

Love your videos...such great advice with a gentle tone which is so critical to adopt a slow and steady wins the race type of program and stick with it. I have found your videos so helpful! I ended up with a hip replacement because I discovered after trying for 4 years to avoid surgery that I had a necrotic hip. But your information was super helpful getting me back to full functioning, running, jumping, aerobics...and playing with my grandkids...I'm turning 66 in 2 weeks! Thanks for the humor ...laughter makes it all easier!

Great video! I could really use the follow-along video for this. I am about to start some PT for a strained gluteus muscle and I want to see how much I can help my hip out before I start.

I love your videos! Your presentation and demonstration is awesome. I hope you are a yoga teacher, too, because you’d be great. I feel so much better after watching these. I was told hip arthritis because I was having hip flexor issues and getting “stuck” while going from sitting to standing. I’m like, huh? Two months ago I was fine and doing body weight exercises and walking 3 miles a few times a week. How’d I get hip arthritis in a month? Be that as it may, I’m taking your approach first. Thank you for sharing this wealth of info and helping the world have happy hips.
