It's not about age or exercise. There is no need to put everyone over 50 in one category. Instead of telling people what exercises to avoid, why not show how to do them properly, so people at any age don't harm themselves. All exercise is for everyone. we just need to know how to do them correctly, where to start, and what speed and resistance to apply. Stay healthy, people over 50! 🤗

The point of this article is to avoid poor form in various exercises. It’s not to say you can’t do deadlifts; it’s to say you should use the proper form. I’m 66 and have done deadlifts for years. I’ve learned the proper form for this exercise from experienced instructors.
@mishkathlay2 ай бұрын
You clearly did not watch the man’s video. And he has clearly stated this has nothing to do with proper form, as even a 20 year old can be injured using improper form. He is specifically stating that people over 50 should not do WEIGHTED deadlifts or squats. Which is rather outrageous. We need to continue those compound movements with increasing weight as we get stronger.

I'm 52 and nearly a year out from shoulder surgery due to overuse. I spent my forties doing frequent volume-heavy weightlifting, and Dr. Livingood is right about most of this. If you like weightlifting, just make sure you get great coaching, you learn proper form, and you don't lift more weight than you can do with proper form...or you will pay the price. There are so many alternative movements to heavy weightlifting back squats and deadlifts to build your strength and not tear your joints apart. I also highly recommend implementing mobility and balance exercises. Hot yoga has been a big game-changer for me.

I think everyone if they have the determination to do it can get in shape at any age. But do it slow just as you are suggesting. Trust me I had colon cancer and couldn't work out for a while and when you are older you have to start slow. I am 60 and have been doing these exercises for years. I am conditioned to it but I have to agree Form and Control is everything. I tend to do more mobility workouts now but when I do a strength workout I tend to use lighter weights and pay attention to Form and Control. When running, form is very important. I have slowed my running down and paid attention to looking up and keeping my hips pressed forward. This stopped me from running on tip-toes and straining my achilles tendon. Form again. I could recover quickly from injuries when younger, but I am much more cautious now. I good video, but as a counter argument, I would say we have to push the envelope to a degree, just do it properly.

It’s not the sitting but poor posture from weak back and core muscles. I’m 80 and no back pain despite severe back pains in my youth. Then I saw a picture of my slumped, weak posture and realized why I never hurt when I do gentle yoga regularly. It strengthens muscles and corrects posture. Look at any 1950 movie of secretaries typing at a desk- ramrod straight, and no one ever heard of Carpel Tunnel Syndrome or even backaches in those days from them. Beautiful posture from strong muscles and no pains. If you sit slumped with your head forward you will have pain. You need to slowly balance that problem with yoga “cat-cows” and “Cobras” and “half locusts”. Build slowly. They cured my back pains. Good luck. ❤❤❤

BIG difference in energy, workout flexibility, and weight loss! It's not that we are old, it's that our body does not have the limber attributes of the younger body. Just is what it is. Working out smarter has kept me from having injuries, which let's face it, one hospital lay up can really degrade the body. ❤

I'm 71, and this week scrambled up and over a 1950m NZ pass that required ice axe and crampons but didn't bring them. 6, 10, 3 hour days, and didn't feel anything but tired so did two 5+6 hour days a day later. Keep moving folks - slowly but surely. Stretch, yoga, pilates, extensions, some weights.

This is advice only for people in poor physical shape. Most of your tips relate to people who use poor form and/or are undergoing rehabilitation from injury or previous neglect. Anyone who has participated regularly in physical activity and is in reasonable shape doesn’t need to avoid these exercises, just watch your form and choose more effective exercises in some cases. If you’re over 50 you’re not automatically a basket case. I’m nearly 70 and don’t need to be swaddled in bubble wrap

@czealtamahawk12283 ай бұрын
Am mid 50s and am still doing most of these exercises like when i was 30s. Most "utub" experts says you're too old to squat or dead lift. Think depends on conditioning. Also, take time to stretch and warm-up as we mature. Nourish joints, bones and mobility daily for active lifestyle. Funny thing is they're not over 50s and they're now an expert of what we can and can't do.
@dalemonn27823 ай бұрын
Of course it depends on your condition, but he is speaking to potentially half a million people so he would have to generalize. And yes, he is an expert. Would you not follow the advice of an oncologist because she's never had cancer?
@arunaniermann20033 ай бұрын
Best you can do is just ignoring all these experts 😁. I do all this like you like in my teenage days and absolutely don't feel like 55😊
@arunaniermann20033 ай бұрын
@@dalemonn2782 To be honest I am always suspicious about all the experts, and especially since 2020. And you find one oncologist saying this and another saying that. Fact is that we all have to die one day and better to enjoy the rest of the time with dancing and all the good things to do. My experience and the experience from many other hobby dancers as well is that dancing keeps your body flexible and your mind also. Such a shame that in the Western World dancing is regarded lesser worth or minor to ball and other sports. At least my impression. And unfortunately quite few boys and men do it. In India also many boys and men enjoy dancing and take lessons

The modified versions of these exercises that this Doctor is showing are absolutely correct. I have osteoporosis that continually is getting worse and I eat properly, take all the right vitamins, etc., but I exercise daily and these modified exercises I do daily. This Docto is spot on with his modifications. My physical therapist showed me the proper modifications I need for my medical condition and this Doctor is right.❤❤❤❤😊

@DrLivingood HI Doctor. I purchased your book a couple of years ago. I'm 67. Eat healthier, exercise daily but our bodies still break down as we age. I loved this video with the modified versions. The negative remarks that some people put on your video upset me because you truly care and want to help people heal properly and naturally. My Doctor's get upset with me because I refuse to take Big Pharmer's poison. More Doctors should be as knowledgeable and educational towards your patients and viewers. I am grateful that I found your channel and purchased your book. Thank you so much. God Bless you.

However this video is very helpful for those of us who at 50 felt like we had been run over by a trailer truck!! 😮 Any movement is painful and we lost our flexibility and vitality. Please make a video with a workout routine that is appropriate for those of us over 50 who are aching all over. Thank you!! 🌹

I am 52 and do weighted squats and deadlifts and sit ups. However, I did not start out that way about 15 months ago. It has been a gradual guided build up as I have gotten stronger and with good form (I see a Kinesiologist and attend a perimenopause/menopause class). You must always engage your core when doing these and not go heavier than your capacity or you risk injury. Core engagement takes practice and eventual muscle memory. A year ago I could not do a sit-up. Now I can do a sit-up very easily and have a very strong core - stronger than it’s ever been. Sure, maybe don’t use weights for squats or deadlifts if you are weak and just starting out, but if you don’t increase weight, then you won’t increase strength. My personal motivation for weight training like this is battling and managing chronic pain and it has improved my entire body. Everyone’s body is different so personal training on how to do it properly is best, coupled with proper nutrition. Being over 50 doesn’t mean anything.

It's amazing what they can do these days!!!

Stretching more is key for me for my back. Never stop exercising just listen to your body it will tell you when to rest. Sometimes, we have to be still. Listen to your body, but dont quit exercising. We can because we do. We can’t because we don’t. No matter our age. I’m 80 , pretty much painfree despite a history of back pain in my 30’s and 40’s. I do some easy yoga regularly and some exercises almost every day. We must get stronger and more flexible as we get older or we decline and hurt. It’s up to us. The trick is to do a little, very slow movements, frequently. On and off all day. 3 minutes here, 5 minutes there. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY! It should always be comfortable and you won’t hurt yourself. If it’s new to you, do less, slower. Build slowly and you’ll get better as you age. Muscle knows no age. Good luck ❤
