Due to herniated disks I have done belt squats for 30 years. Made my first belt from seat belt straps taken from a junk car. I use a landmine or sometimes a cable machine. If the feet are not planted properly in relation to the weight it can hurt the knees. Little practice and you will figure it out.

Interesting. How much weight do you think the seatbelt straps can hold?

Works even better if you stand on lengths of 4x2 laid flat. Gives you greater depth of squat.

For those who are less flexible, this is harder to get into position than Lee makes it look. You may need to add a few canvas loops or heavy duty carabiners to get hooked in and then you won’t be parallel. No biggie just start where you can and depth will come and you can progressively lose the loops and just step in as Lee does. I’m not there yet. Hence they have machines and all sorts of other approaches. It’s infinitely safer for the back and is therefore worth all the effort and expense.

Been doing these for a while now (coincidence, loads of films about them on You tube)& prefer them, (never been a fan of regular squats, however I will say that the 'landmine belt squat' is 'slightly' different to the 'vertical belt squats' in that the landmine type forces you 'slightly' ''forward for a slightly different effect..but both very good IMO,.

I purchased a Spud Inc hip belt last year, very good piece of equipment. I prefer doing these on boxes, just make sure you're standing in front of a rack so you will have something to hold onto in case you lose your balance! Thanks for posting!

One good recommendation I found is the Coachulla Iron Hip Belt Squat attachment. What I love about it is its customize depending on the size of your power rack saved me a lot of money from buying a hip belt squat machine.

Lee, thank you for the great video and your passion for instructing tried and true techniques that mitigate injury. A special thanks for the clear guidance on how to use just the carabiner and Spud Inc belt when attaching it to Landmine setup. I’ve seen a multitude of DIY videos that incorporate lanyards, etc. But those videos inadvertently confuse the ease of hookup you taught during your Spud Inc video tutorial. We only need the Spud Inc belt and carabiner to attach and execute Landmine Belt Squats.

Lee, in order to mimic the motion of squatting and taking the hips down far enough so the crease lands below the knee would you be able to stand on small blocks or even a couple plates and still use the landmine for this movement?

Hi Lee, This is a fantastic alternative to regular squats. It sucks that I had a landmine and olympic bar that I just sold cuz my lower back was killing me from doing rows and deadlifts with it. I have some blocks that I've been using for belt squats, but you're right, balance is an issue and pretty scary at times. Thank you so much for the great idea. Time to get on craigslist to find another landmine and bar

thanks for this vid. I have the spud inc hip belt in bright yellow same as yours, and I tried hip belt squats the way you show in this video, I put my barbell in the corner of my garage. Awesome burn in the quads. I was doing them standing on 2 plyo boxes but I like your variant better, I felt them much more in the quads doing it your way

You could also just use two bumper plates on the ground as your "platform", it's stable and it would give you extra three inches of depth.

Though undoubtedly true that someone standing on big blocks like that guy in your video would be well advised to have life insurance, you could stand on a pair of yoga steps for a few more inches of range of motion without much risk.

What is a good interval to take photos of yourself? If it's too soon I can lose motivation from not seeing any progress.. if it's too late I don't get the boost and that motivation of seeing the progress to push me further and harder.

Hey Liam, this is purely a hypothetical here, but what are your thoughts on combining say a hip belt squat with a powerlifting Safety Squat Bar, ie; while you do a hip belt squat, add a SSB onto your shoulders? Do you think there would be any pros to doing this, if you're trying to put on mass? I know it sounds a bit nuts but the idea certainly has me thinking of maybe giving it a shot. Thoughts?

The sizing of these belts seems to be a common issue in reviews. Any guidelines? According to the spud Inc site anyone over 150lbs should get the Regular size. That's a huge range.

I can't remember what size this belt was and I no longer workout at that gym anymore so I can't check to see. These days I use a proper belt squat machine that we have at the gym I'm training at now so I haven't done the landmine belt squats recently.

This is my all time favourite way to squat. I use the exact same setup. However I find that I have a little confidence issue with the carabeena. I have had it slip a few times while loaded and have ended up landing fair square back on the bar between my butt cheeks. Can you think of another way we could secure the spud belt around the bar with a little more security? I was thinking about wrapping a dead resistance band around the bar first for some grip but I reckon it will be fiddly.

switching from barbell squat to hip squats , is just switching the pain from across ur back to the thighs
@johnswaim3919
@johnswaim3919 6 жыл бұрын
Jack Daniel If you mean "pain" in the sense of pushing boundaries to incite growth, what's the problem?
@thor1186
@thor1186 6 жыл бұрын
I don't have a problem to incite growth, I was just commenting in how Lee mentioned he liked the straps for hip squats because he use to use a chain & it caused a lot of pain, as in discomfort. my pt was after not doing barbell squats for 20 years I noticed w/ a pad I came close to my old max, w/out a pad I can't. it's the pain of the barbell which I need to get used to, so I do a barbell squat w/ & w/out a pad to deaden the nerves on my back to workout w/out the pad. so if u or ur gym doesn't provide a strap maybe build up to withstand the pain & build up to a higher weight

I’ve ordered one from Spud without trying it. But how does it not pull on the lumbar spine? It appears that it would pull the spine slightly forward. Any thoughts?
