The Urban Cowboy soundtrack, on which this appears, (and the band appears in the movie,) effectively sparked a nationwide country movement in 1980. Cowboy hats with big feathery hatbands everywhere and many rock stations suddenly switched to country. Notably the 50 kilowatt super station KOMA out of Oklahoma City, known nationwide as a rock station, switched to country as a result of Urban Cowboy’s influence. John Travolta sparked a nationwide disco movement with Saturday Night Fever, and then he did it again on the country side three years later with Urban Cowboy. Another smash hit from that soundtrack was Johnny Lee’s iconic Looking For Love (In All The Wrong Places,) which launched his brilliant albeit sort of short-lived career. He did have some great songs though.

WOW, that is some awful good fiddle playing. But I would have never made a deal with the devil. I wouldn't take the chance loosing my soul to the devil. Once you made that deal there is no baking out of it. The devil was known for his beauty and his talent for music. With that in mind, I would not have made that bet. Charlie Daniels did an interview with Bill Anderson. He said that was the first song he ever made playing the fiddle. And what is so amazing he said he just started playing the fiddle 6 months before he did this song.

I saw Charlie Daniels and Travis Tritt in concert (for my first time) in Oklahoma in December of 2019. Charlie was so dope and could still shred on his fiddle. He expressed his love for the USA, its citizens, and especially its men and women in uniform protecting our freedom and there was not one dry eye in the theater. He also saw a young boy in the front row who was dancing to the music and Charlie walked right over to him in the middle of a song and gave his bow to the boy. Pretty awesome souvenir and memory for that youngster. Now that he has passed I’m deeply saddened but also thankful that I decided to buy that ticket and drive from Texas to Oklahoma to see him perform. As I sat there just a few rows back I was amazed at how spry he was for being in his 80s. It just goes to show you that life is precious, health is paramount, and every day is a gift. RIP Charlie!

I have never heard a Charley Daniels recording I did not like. It is interesting how often the song credits almost always include the entire band listed as co-songwriters. CDB ant this song are often referenced in others songs including a recently released by Larkin Poe.

Yes he plays the hell out of that fiddle, I think you would like Orange blossom special, but I think you should check out saddle tramp it's a little long but I was fortunate enough to see Charlie the first time in 1976. 38 special opened up for them. The band was a little bigger back then he had two drummers and I'm telling you what a sight, if you listen to saddle tramp I think you will understand why!! I really enjoyed your reaction, and I enjoyed your reaction to Chris Stapleton live, at Austin City limits.

This was a huge f'n hit for Charlie Daniels. It became the song that everybody knows CDB for. Also a great storyteller with: "Uneasy Rider" - Tale of a long hair traveler ending up in a redneck bar in Jackson, Mississippi and talks his way out of gettin' his ass kicked. "Uneasy Rider 88" - Sort of a sequel except him and a friend end up in a rather flamboyant bar. Hijinx ensue. "Legend of Wooley Swamp" - Great ghost story about an old man in the woods.

You need to check out the sequel, "The Devil Comes Back to Georgia". It's set ten years after this song, and the Devil wants a rematch. Johnny Cash narrates, Travis Tritt voices the Devil, Marty Stuart voices Johnny, Charlie plays the Devil's music, and Mark O'Connor plays Johnny's music. Mark plays three notes for every one note Charlie played in this song. He plays so fast, you'll swear his fiddle should have caught fire.
