Woo Hoo!!!! Led Zepplin live. No one had ever heard anything like this before and we loved it, it went with the dazed and confused state of mind many were feeling at the time. And Page and the violin bow! Minds were blown.

This scandanavian tour was only because of the Yardbirds breaking up, so Page put Zeppelin together but had to do 8 gig's that the Yardbirds were contacted to finish, so for the remaining 8 gigs they called themselves 'The New Yardbirds' but straight afterwards they called themselves Led Zeppelin but got their first real tour in Denmark etc and even did a few more TV live shows. It's a Cello bow he uses on Dazed and Confused but only for a couple of minutes on this and the album version.

Awe man ! I wish you had reviewed the performance from the Madison Square Garden concert. It's much better than this early performance. Try Whole Lotta Love from the Madison Square Garden concert next. Also Stairway to Heaven from the Madison Square Garden concert.

If you are only going to listen to one live version of Dazed and Confused, then it should have been live at Madison Square Gardens, 1973. That's the definitive version, and will blow you away. These Denmark performances are great, but don't even begin to touch the levels of the MSG performance. They do give you a glimpse of early Zeppelin. But MSG Dazed and Confused is a must.

It's so great that you're doing these things this way. So much to be said though. The Improv things were the best thing about it at the time. Improv was much more common then than it is now. Well at least anything that was heavily influenced by jazz. But it turned into a rock thing before very long. They were Masters at it. I have never heard this particular live performance and there are some spots here and there and especially near the end when they keep repeating those sixes, it's like wow, and so much of it Rivals all the cool modern really hardcore stuff I've seen like in small venues here in Lawrence Kansas which has an incredible music scene but we get to see people from all around the world from Asia and Italy and all around the United States and it's these young two young adult kids and young adults basically I guess, that have just come out of this cauldron from anywhere in the world and they embody what's current about this. And when I go listen to something like this,, at least you noticed his bass part for sure, it was the Rhythm Section as a whole, with bonzo, but all of them are so tight as you say. I think that nowadays we're just so used to hearing music that is always perfectly regimented in some way that takes a while to kind of get back into the mindset of what it was when you expected people to take solos and improvise and for the band to take some risks during live performances. This was actually the norm for a long time for many kinds of colloquial music. But even at this early stage, that just erupts out of the landscape and they blow so many conceptions out of the water. But I have played in bands for many years and it's one of the most difficult thins to let yourself get way out there and then bring it back in a coherent manner. And yet they did it over and over again. There is a certain mastery and art to doing that well like they do.

In the Denmark show there are points where Page deliberately doesn't come in when he's supposed to, he's just prepping them for the gruelling tours ahead, musical hiccups (not that they needed it). There are also some parts when Plant doesn't sing the correct lines (deliberately probably in response). This was part of their onstage chemistry because one moment the band wouldn't know where Page was going and in another Plant could respond in kind. It's like they were battling but at the same time best mates because they would always get back and land perfectly. If you have ever seen Greta Van Fleet, the lead singer mimics Robert Plant entirely in body language, and he does this thing a lot where he looks to the side. Robert Plant was always looking to his side at Page because they were looking for cues from each other in body language in where the next note was gonna be, if they were going off musically in this moment or going middle road for that part of the song. It is music for music's sake, just for the joy of artistic expression. It's not like it was conveyed to each other, they just had to watch and go with it, Bonham and Jones were masters of improvisation. When Greta Van Fleet's singer looks to his side he aint looking for a musical clue lol. Sorry not ripping GVF don't really care just trying to make a point. Edit: I actually think the singer is pretty good kinda wish he'd strike out on his own and flourish but he never will because they are brothers in the band: This was a kind of underlying aspect of all their live performances, and it is one part of many other things that made them what they were: Master musicians.

Tomorrow (August 12, 1968) is the anniversary of Zep's first rehearsal in a basement room in Gerrard Street. The first song they jammed on was The Yardbirds' Train Kept a Rollin'. The Yardbirds based their version on the Johnny Burnette version, who had in turn based his on the original by Tiny Bradshaw. When Zep first started, they used to play some of The Yardbirds' songs to help fill out their set, such as Train Kept a Rollin', and For Your Love, as well as the Garnet Mimms song As Long As I Have You. Yes, you could definitely see a bit of "newness" within the band in this concert, however they were locked tight. Some of this could have to do with the small stage area, but Jonesy was easily visible instead of lurking in the shadows next to the drums, Bonzo was still the Beast, Jimmy wasn't doing as much strutting and kept his face low (or maybe it was just the long hair), and Robert had not fully ascended to his "Golden God" status yet definitely had stage presence. I personally didn't hear what you meant by transition difficulty; I'd definitely tell you if I did. Jonesy did say that you always had to concentrate and be on your toes during a Zep concert because the improvisation would go everywhere and anywhere.

Watch the entire RAH Concert film from 1970. They were captured at their early peak and in their prime. It’s an incredible show as good as the Stockholm show. Probably better because the kids reacted better!

It's really hard to find live recordings of Robert Plant singing in key or sounding remotely close to the studio versions. Heard a few which were decent but not many.

Communication breakdown is not really blues! It's pretty much proto metal and punk! Music was changed after this album came out!

Nobody had heard anything like Communication Breakdown before. Some will say the MC5 kicked off this sound, but "Kick Out the Jams" was released in February 1969 (a month after LZ1) and it didn't really chart until May of that year.

So glad this Denmark performance is available - they were already firing on all cylinders, but the audience were pretty unenthused - polite golf claps 8-P Bit of a different opinion in that Zep didn't exactly create heavy blues / rock. As an example directly related to this performance, Page started developing his version of "Dazed & Confused" during the latter days of the Yardbirds - you can find live performances on YT.

Great, early Zeppelin, they freaked everyone out in 1969, I am a witness, for sure, having played both the first and second albums the week they came out. For an even better version of Dazed and Confused, try the 1973 MSG version from the Song Remains the Same soundtrack, it is a superior version. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

Always good to hear any Zeppelin but if u watch any dazed and confused live it has to be the MSG 28 minute one. It showcases the genius interplay between each member and why they were classed as legends. Never seen musicianship like it. The riffs and Jams in it are unbelievable! One of my favourite live pieces to watch ever alongside jimi Hendrix- Woodstock improvisation, live at woodstock, The Who- My generation 14 minute version live at leeds and The Who - Young man blues at Isle of Wight 70. Great channel tho. Loving it!

Just a couple of months later the band became a total monster. Listen to 4/27/69 at Fillmore West. It’s absolutely sick. Page’s guitar tone is the filthiest on record

Yeah…..Jimmy painted that guitar himself. He went on tour later, leaving this guitar at home. A good “friend” of his house sat for him while he was gone, when Jimmy got back, his friend excitedly told him he had a surprise for him. He showed him this guitar, which he had stripped of all its psychedelia down to the wood…and I think he painted it brown. Jimmy still has that guitar, but I dont believe he has ever played it since. Good story…but I wonder what kind of “friend” would think Jimmy would be happy to have one of his guitars messed with? Obviously didn’t “know” him at all.

In the early days, up till probably 72, they were more concerned with playing proficiently. By 73 it starts to be about the show. Not that the playing wasn't still good, but it (especially Jimmy) started to get sloppier. Sadly by 77 some shows were not good. Drugs and booze were also a big factor.
