Mike wrote this song on his own. He said at the time that it was about “a friend,” but on MTV’s The Ride, they basically came out and said he wrote it for Chester, to help him get sober. Also, did you spot that the body rising up was Chester? It shows Chester’s spirit leaving his body in the beginning, and then you see the spirit singing through the first verses. Then at the bridge, the spirit goes back into his body and his body rises back to the rooftop, where the band is playing. It definitely speaks to the fact that he’d lived with suicidal ideation for a long time. Or at least, he knew his addiction would kill him if he didn’t change.

whatiwasgoingtosay Of course he wrote it for Chester, that's why Mike was so hurt when Chester didn't get sober after the release of Meteora. That's why they take so long to create and release MTM and that's why Mike create FM and Chester DBS. I think 'Believe me' in Rising Tied is for Chester.

It helped me too. Not really personally, but in my writing. I have a charscter with anger issues, who desperately to get over them, but not let others help her with it. She wants to be the tough one. But a tough one who's not angry all the time. Yet it has basically become her default emotion. So when she first sings it, she's slowly getting more and more emotional, ending the song by slamming her hands into the piano, breaking out in tears and angrily stomping away. Then at the end, when she finally overcomes her anger issues, she sings it again, finally having broken her habit

I’ve been studying in cinema, history of art and photography, and even thought I finished my studies now and have seen a lot of artistic work during my time in university and college, this song is still, at 35, the one that had the biggest impact/influence in my life ever. And I go back at when it was released, and the years following. This is truly a musical masterpiece all together with its videoclip, because its essence can be felt right down your spine while your watch it as a whole, and understand its context. It generate a strong emotion that took its whole sense with the life of its singer, and unfortunately, its death as well.

kingmaker15 One of my favorites! I told my hubs and my best friend i want the messenger and leave out all the rest played at my own funeral. I am making a list. I have many health issues that have manifested themselves over the last 4 yrs and one of the 3 cardiac conditions is very dangerous and makes me a ticking time bomb because of another mental disorder that affects my heart. Long qt syndrome and adjustment disorder are my mortal enemies. But i have to do the best i can to control it on my own as well as many other problems. 2 things i always say, do not let your health (especially mental illness) control your life, learn to control it instead. And the other is one my psych put into perspective for me. Do not call it "MY" such and such disorder, condition, syndrome, or illness because then you allow it to define YOU, but call it "THE" such and such disorder, condition, syndrome, or illness because only YOU define you, NO MATTER the diagnosis/diagnoses. Much Love and Light to you!

The sync is sadly out again, hope you can fix it. The body lying on the car and then flying up was actually Chester. You can see him land at the top of the building and start singing. This song was written by Mike. He wrote it in 2002, in matter of few hours and sang on it. The lyrics didn't change since then, it was just rerecorded, finished (for example added live strings), Chester sang on it instead and the song was ready to mix. Mike wrote it about Chester, he wanted the song to be a help for him. Chester fell in love with the song instantly (he considered it one of his most favorite songs), though the song was not played live until more than half a year after the album was released, likely due to it being very emotional for Chester to perform. He had problems recording it and started crying multiple times in the vocal booth, however he still managed to record all vocals for this song in a single day. Since its debut, the song became a standard part of their setlist, it often featured piano intro and extended outro, in which Chester sang with the crowd without any instruments. Interesting fact about this song is that though it was written in matter of hours, Mike wanted to write a song like that for about 5 years (that's what he always said, but it was probably 4, as Mike often thought Chester joined the band in 1998, while it was a year later, I guess there were too many things to do for them and he just doesn't remember it, or maybe he does now, as he didn't mention it was twenty years since he met Chester this March, so I guess he now knows it's nineteen years ago, because Chester first met them in March 1999). He wanted to write song with this kind of theme, wrote multiple of these, but he was never satisfied with the result, so they were never released, until it clicked perfectly and Breaking The Habit was created. Chester was sadly suicidal long time before his death. He mentioned he wanted to commit suicide before meeting the band, however they saved him and he found a new reasons to live. Chester was likely suicidal during the making of Meteora, then again, two years later, after his divorce. Then he married his second wife Talinda in 2005, but he was a mess due to his alcohol addiction caused by the divorce. After his death Talinda revealed he once left home in 2006, drunk and with a gun. Luckily he was found by the police before he could do something. Since then things got better. Seems like alcohol was making him suicidal. Some alcohol was found in his room after he was found dead. Not much, but for cured alcoholic, even small amount can cause feeling extremely guilty for drinking again, open up all the other wounds, make you go crazy and if there is no one to stop it, even cause suicide. That's probably what happened, unfortunately :(

This song was Chester's favorite song and shakes me to the core hearing it after his passing. I'm in tears because the saddest part about this song is that it could be interpreted as breaking the habit of addiction. But when you watch this masterpiece of a music video Chester is showing us he broke the habit by jumping off the building killing himself breaking free of the pain. His spirit leaves him and becomes one with the other people struggling. It's like I can feel that spirit right with me now as I listen to it. Haunting, devastating, and their deepest darkest song.

Chester used to break down while they were trying to record the song, because it hit too close to home for him :') He had a shitty childhood, his parents divorced and he lives with his dad, who was working all the time. And he got abused for years by an older acquaintance, then he started doing drugs and drinking, which started his addiction. He had a toxic relationship with his first wife and lived in poverty as the band worked at their first album. So yeah, no wonder this song meant so much to him.(And btw, that's just an abbreviated version of the whole story, you can find out the whole thing in more details on his wiki page.)

Rheza Nurprasetya That song reminds me of my Dad who passed in 2011 after 13 months of battling stage 4 terminal cancer. They diagnosed him sept 2010 and gave him 2-4 months. But at 2 months i had gotten pregnant with my son after 6 yrs of trying, 2 losses, and told i would never carry past 1st trimester due to fertility problems. My 2nd and last loss was in june that same year and nearly took my life too. A week to the day of that one my sister in law lost her and my brothers twins. She was a week behind me in her pregnancy. After his diagnosis and 2 months after finding out i was pregnant again, she found out she was pregnant again. My dad held on those 13 months to meet his 13th and 14th grandbabies first. I had my son July 21st (after almost losing him several times too) and my neice was born sept 10th. He passed oct 5th. But not only does waiting for the end remind me of him by lyrics basically explaining his battle but also because the night he died some of us gathered at my sisters house and my brother in law was playing it on repeat. It is very cathartic to me to listen to it.

I remember when the album One More Light was released. Alot of people didn't like Heavy, and just wanted that old Hybrid Theory Linkin Park. But they forgot to ask if the song is good. There was alot more to Chester than just yelling. He has such a beautiful singing voice. One More Light was an amazing album, and it showed you don't need screaming to be a good rock album. If you want the old Linkin Park, then go listen to the old Linkin Park. Bands evolve, and I think they evolved very well.

Mike wrote the lyrics for "Breaking the Habit" and showed it to Chester to give him that final nudge into wanting to get help with his addiction, and when Chester read the lyrics, he just broke down and cried and it finally gave him that final courage to go into rehab and started seeking help with a therepy. This song became his #2 favorite of theirs to perform over the years. Then at anytime if Mike seen that Chester was really struggling with depression and sobriety he was one of the ones that would pull Chester back from that ledge. #Team Bennoda 💜😭💔

He actually wrote it before he even met Our dearest Chester... But as said by Mike, he couldn't find the missing piece...these words were written but not completed....and when Ches came into the picture, it came to him. As it felt to Mike for all the time, he had been waiting and the missing piece of the puzzle was Ches, after getting to know his sad struggles that he fucking unfortunately faced... This song is so damn special for more than one reason... The deep friendship between theSe two amazing people (Chester..the awesome Bennington, and Mr. The Mike Shinoda), the struggles of our beloved Ches...and so so much more. It is deep, unbiased, pure, raw, honest and all so v inspirational. Chaz, this is one of your fav. Song..... and I know why ..and how...and what ... About it. Chester, you have been the bravest, most sincere towards your art, towards your life and everything..you are the purest soul,my Chester and Iam so damn proud of you... Everything about you makes me smile and make me the happiest person alive...I love you so so so so so so very much.... More and more each day. #MakeChesterProud #fuckdepression #320Changesdirection

I'm glad you've finally reacted to Breaking the Habit, my man Flow. I like your analysis and interpretation of the song. Although this song has multiple layers and ways to be interpreted. This song was written by Mike specifically for Chester to help him with his drug and alcohol abuse. In a way you can consider the meaning behind the song as breaking all the bad habits, but if you search a bit deeper into the lyrics; you'll find it to be a bit more tragic. He says that he doesn't know what's "worth fighting for", struggling in confusion. Eventually realising that he can't get over his addictions as he will " never fight again " - it implies that he's about to give up as this is "how it ends". Now the sad part here is that his revelation was that the only way to escape his habits is by suicide. That is the bit of clarity he saw before his eyes filled with depression and confusion. If you pay attention to the animated clip, the person who jumped off the building is Chester, as you can see time rewinding itself where they perform the song on top of the building. There's a reason why this song has to be my favourite song of all time. When I was struggling through heavy depression, there were many instances where I felt like I was breaking from the inside. Except I was known to be a happy cheerful guy, so that was the front I'd normally show to others. I didn't want others to involve with my inner struggles. Faking a smile until you're home as things slowly went from bad to worse, I started to get the urge to completely give up on life. At the end of it all, I've managed to pick myself back up. But throughout the journey I've had this song on top of my playlist for over 10 years. I may be mentally scarred and bruised for a lifetime, I may have to deal with recurrent depression. But this song helped me get through it all. I'm certain many others were influenced greatly as well. It's ironic how such a dark, sad and depressing (yet beautiful) song became my biggest inspiration. I'm not the type of person who would easily share this kind of detail, but for today I'll break those habits and say #fuckdepression

I think the lyrics pertain to someone who doesn't want to keep fighting with someone else. Mostly it's the lines: I don't want to be the one The battle always choose 'Cause inside I can realize That I'm the one confused He knows that the arguments are going nowhere I don't know what's worth fighting for Or why I have to scream I don't know why I instigate And say what I don't mean Signifying that the singer doesn't want to continue battling I don't know how I got this way I know it's not all right/I'll never be all right So I'm breaking the habit He sees his fault and wants to change, when the chorus switches to "I'll never be all right", I feel like he's saying that the effects might be too much for the relationship

Hey There from Russia, man. I just want to say thank you for this experience I had watching your videos. As a hardcore Linkin Park fan, I appreciate this so much, you can't even imagine. You've got my subscribe and a ring bell on everything you are about to show us!! So here are some of my suggestions for you as a young blood in Linkin Park Family, cuz i'm 30 years old and i've been listening to LP for 18 years now and I've got something really interesting for you, so you might check it out if you want: 1. There's a lot of fans of your channel, that used to see other stuff but Linkin Park, so don't forget about them, and maybe take a pause on reacting LP for other good stuff, like The Carters, New Drake's Scorpion, 5 releases of Kanye West's production, even Grandson (the one featuring Mike Shinoda on the track "Running From My Shadow"), new album by Houston's Finest Trae The Truth, or whatever you want. you subscribers will say a lot of thanks to you. It's not a critisism, I like what you are doing and i want you to keep it up, But we must be gentle to all the audience. 2. Talking about Live Shows, I'd Highly recommend you to stream one of the best LP performances - Rock Am Ring 2014 (kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4XEqZJnjbumqtE). I swear blood, this one will be mindblowing!!!! (can't wait to see this stream, if it happens, BTW) And you should also check out the performance on a Red Square in Moscow, Russia 2010. I can put my name on it, you will never see the sickest croud, than This One on that show! 3. I'd Also recommend You th check Mike's solo project Fort Minor, and Chester's Solo project Out of Ashes. These ones were very influential to me, when they were released. I'm really jealous to some point, because in you I can see a younger me, being literally blown away by their music. It's a great pleasure to see someone falls in love with the band, just like i did when i was a kid. I really feel like you enjoy it, and this feeling makes me proud, that there are still some bright minds, able to understand this band and the impact of their matherial to the music as the whole. Linkin Park made my music taste, made it vesitile, not fixed or stuck on one direction or genre. and this is why they are the no.1 band for so many beautiful people all around the world. P.S. And, if it's possible, i'd like you to make a reaction video for one of my favorite bands Phantogram. For some reason, i'm sure, you will like theit music, this band is amazing too, and I found them only because I listened to LP, and was, and AM still hungry for new music and styles. P.S.S. Да, я действительно из России, Санкт-Петербург (а изначально - Петропавловск-Камчатский). Спасибо, парень, ты сделал мой день!!! Hope you'll find ways to figure out the last part of a message))
