Mustaine is arguably the godfather of thrash metal, the influence of his frenetic and frantic way of playing can be heard all over kill 'em all, that and his own work in megadeth would go and influence so many guitar players who never had heard metal being played that way

Dave Mustaine (singer and guitarist) was originally the lead guitarist for Metallica, they kicked him out due to substance abuse just before they recorded Kill Em All, and he was replaced by Kirk Hammett, alot of the music on Kill Em All and some on Ride The Lightning was written by Mustaine and was pissed when they used it, he formed Megadeth just to get back at Metallica, for 20 years there was nothing but rivalry between the two bands, but they've made up since then
@tonysoto8949
@tonysoto8949 Жыл бұрын
You ever heard of Slander? He was not kicked out for substance abuse. They all did drugs and drank, Dave unfortunately was a violent drunk and that caused Lars to get nervous because he would get into fights and Lars was a little Bee otch. Then there was the incident where James Hetfield kicked Dave’s Pitbull puppy for chewing on a bass guitar and Dave knocked him out. At that point James and Lars started looking for his replacement. On a long road trip to New York is when they fired him and dropped him off at the bus station with his dog and no money. And that the very short story about what happened

@@ooop8725 and they succeeded. There is no question Megadeth has made better music. There is no question that early metalica success was the influence of Dave’s musical style. Metalica cared enough about Megadeth that James taught or tried to teach Kirk the Spider Cord technique. You are confusing pop popularity with quality of music. I’d be stupid to argue that Megadeth is more popular because that is not reality. Same goes for saying Metalica is better than Megadeth, only someone stupid would claim that.

Leader Dave Mustaine was the original lead guitar for Metallica along with some of the song writing and lyrics for Metallica's first 2 studio albums especially kill them all. The hero for both bands originally was Metallica's late great bassist Cliff Burton. He knew music theory and really showed the guys how to put music together in a well structured manner. Heavily influenced Master of puppets.

oh man I am so excited that you checked out metal! So I can tell you the effect on the guitar that you were talking about (8:34ish) is the sound of the strings bending. Lots of metal guys played with Floyd Rose tremolos. it's a guitar bridge- won't nerd out on this. Anyway, it lets the player do these dive-bomb kind of string bends. So as that tone is getting deeper, it's because the mechanism in the floyd rose allows the player to bend all the strings by pulling or pushing on a metal arm: the whammy bar. Yep they're called that. The tempo changes and contrasting intensity that are common in metal are most likely the influence of the hardcore movement in the 1980s. I am skipping over (sadly) important bands like Iggy and the Stooges and MC5 from the 1970s in the interest of brevity. While the Sex Pistols and the Clash were playing punk rock that was basically up tempo stripped down rock and roll riffs, American bands were playing much less orthodox riffs that played with dissonance and favored aggressive playing. East coast and Midwest bands tended to be the most aggressive and intense. That is until Black Flag happened. If there is 1 song from that era I think you NEED to check out, it's called "The Bars." Black Flag is THE quintessential California hardcore band. Bloody amazing. There are many other bands from the west coast worth checking out, but have to skip them here. This style was really built around the mosh pit. The parts where the tempo slows down are what I'd describe as the creepy crawly movement in the pit. People are moving in a circle probably with intense but slower movements. Then the band goes hard and all hell breaks loose. That whole mosh pit thing is common to punk, metal, post punk, alternative, and grunge to name a few. In our case here, bands like MOD, DRI, SOD, Cro Mags, Agnostic Front, WarZone, etc lived somewhere between raw and unpolished hardcore to very precise and very fast speed and thrash metal. Out of the thrash metal bands of the 1980s came the big 4 of American metal: Anthrax (from NY, a little goofy, more thrash oriented. great band), Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. They all have that common origin in aggressive punk and hardcore and they all take it in different directions. All of those bands are interesting and very talented. I would encourage you to explore the sort of metal that happened in the UK, specifically Iron Maiden. They are theatrical, historically dense, operatic metal, and they are BRILLIANT. I suggest Powerslave as a starting point. That album doesn't have a bad song on it. They have a live album called Live After Death that is tremendous. it covers about 3 albums worth of highlights (Power Slave, Peace of Mind, and Number of the Beast). Bro, please enjoy your journey. I hope this helps!

I was born in 1976, which put me as 18 in 1995, so I was mid teens for this music, just the right time to have been born to not have missed this or been born so far before it to not recognize the talent of this music. This many years later the hair on the back of my head still stands up listening megegadeth. Oh, and there's a reason you hear metallica in Megadeth's music, that's because the singer here and rhythm guitarist was the lead guitarist for Metallica, they kicked him from the the band and used his music for their first two CD's.

You should really do The Mechanix off their first album, Dave used to be in Metallica and they performed that song (it even appears on the No Life Til Leather demo), but after kicking Dave out of the band right before recording Kill Em All they changed the arrangement to become The Four Horseman. Dave included The Mechanix on the album specifically as a “fuck you” to Metallica, I’d love to see what you think of the original compared to the far more developed Four Horseman. In My Darkest Hour, Five Magics, Peace Sells, and Hangar 18 would also be awesome

4:05 Dave Mustaine wrote this song after he said "Give Ireland back to the Irish" at a concert in Northern Ireland and it caused a riot between the Catholics and Protestants. What he's saying in this line is that when people think of "holy wars" they think of Israel and Palestine, but as he said, "It might be your homeland," such as in Northern Ireland or even America.

From an Interview with Dave about the incident in County Antrim "These guys were having more fun than I was, even though I had already seen a couple of drinking partners smile all the way down. I had a shot of schnapps and some of everything else and went back out. "Full of everything and looking out at the crowd, a song I had heard by Paul McCartney popped into my mind, and I thought, 'If it's good enough for Sir Paul, it's good enough for me.' "I walked up to the microphone and said, 'Give Ireland back to the Irish. This one is for the cause.' We slammed into the Sex Pistols song Anarchy In The UK, which we altered to Anarchy in Antrim for the occasion. "It was like I had set off a bomb in the audience. It divided the crowd right down the middle, Protestants and Catholics. "We were escorted out of town that night in a bulletproof bus, although I still didn't realise the enormity of my gaffe." A day later, Dave started writing the lyrics to Holy Wars which would feature on their album Rust in Peace and reached number 24 in the UK charts and the Top 10 in the Republic.

Metallica and Megadeth didn't do a "renaissance" of metal. They pushed the boundaries of what existed then. Specifically, their music was at first described as "speed metal", and later renamed as "thrash metal", which is a mixture between heavy metal and punk. When you ask about what effect is on Mustaine's solo, that's kind of the amazing thing about it. He actually used very minimal effects and not even such crazy distortion by metal standards, but on that big solo he basically just turns up the gain and lets it rip. But the sound you describe as "like the strings are gonna come off" is pretty much just Dave's amazing riffs and blinding speed. You can't fake that with effect pedals. Trust me, I've tried 🤣🤘🏼

4:48 kinda, though Dave Mustaine, the founder and only original member of Megadeth, was originally the lead guitarist of Metallica. That's why they sound similar.

I wish all reaction channels would look up lyrics and background info on the song. This is the first video I've seen on your channel, but I subbed just for that. Maybe some band background info would help, as you would've learned what you will from the comments about Dave being an original member of Metallica. Haha. Either way, great reaction!

Nevermind, left the comment while watching and saw that you gave them a goog at the end. Didn't show the Metallica association. But that's not on you. So I pretty much appreciate your whole approach to reactions!

The reason early Mettalica sounds like this, is because Dave taught James Hetfield his own Spider Cord technique, which allows a guitarist to move up and down the neck of the guitar faster. It’s just a placement of the fingers in the neck that allows you to get from string to string with less space to cover on the neck. There is video of James Hetfield teaching Kirk Hammet, Dave’s Spider Cord which James knew they would need to play all of Dave’s riffs on Kill Em All and Ride the Lightening. In the video however it shows James getting pissed because Kirk couldn’t get the Spider Cord and also Kirk is more of a Wah Wah pedal using guitarist who had never been known for his shredding speed.

Wow this is total nonsense! There I sno video of James teaching kirk the spider chord technique, which by the way Dave didn't invent and Metallica don't use. Metallica sounds like they do because of James's style of writing nothing to do with Dave

the reason they sound similar is because dave mustaine from megadeth was the lead guitarists in metallica before kirk hammet

Mustaine doesn't use effects on his guitars.. He creates all the sounds out of that guitar himself on stage.. Dude is an unrivalled beast of a guitarist.. I would look into Mustaines history considering some of your comments here.. There is no Thrash without Mustaine.. The thinking man's band.

That's the thing, there's lots of good thrash music outside of what metallica did. Just people have to venture out there and try other thrash bands. Especially from that 80s era.

When Dave Mustaine was fired from Metallica and formed Megadeth w/ bassist David Ellefson in 1983, fans of Metallica kept writing letters to the band to be a "fast thrash metal band"... and they obliged when they debuted in 1984. But Mustaine did not want to replicate Metallica's brand of thrash metal... Megadeth's first drummer was a jazz/ fusion drummer (the late) Gar Samuelson, who brought an unpredictability to Megadeth's music and set the template for the future of the band. While Metallica were not the most proficient of musicians, they were a combination of 2 British bands - Motorhead (speed and attitude) and Diamond Head (melody, rawness and delivery)... and some of the riffing style of Venom (the band). Diamond Head were a British metal band from the late 70's/ early 80's that had a very raw sound, but also had a flair for melody and striking song structures... Metallica could not play Iron Maiden or Judas Priest songs live, but they could perform Diamond Head songs... Critics thought they were going to be huge, but by the mid-80's, Diamond Head had floundered and broke up... Metallica covered a few of their songs and gave them enough fanfare to reform numerous times over the years... As of late, Diamond Head only has founding guitarist Brian Tatler in the band, recording and touring... (the original vocalist was Sean Harris). In contrast, Megadeth were as proficient as they got in metal... Dave Mustaine was a shredding lead guitarist and riff master who created most of the music... his lyrics were cynical, nihilistic and political at times... Megadeth had the proficiency of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, the attitude of the punk legends the Sex Pistols, and a touch of Diamond Head (a band Mustaine was a huge fan of). David Ellefson was a very technical bass player... and Megadeth always employed exception lead guitarists alongside Mustaine (Chris Poland, Jeff Young, Marty Friedman, etc.) who could give Megadeth that dual-lead guitar attack w/ complimenting styles (which Metallica did not have... they alternated between lead & rhythm guitar) and drummers who were just beasts on the drum kit (Gar Samuelson, Chuck Behler, Nick Menza, etc.)
