They covered this and Blitzkrieg as B-sides for Creeping Dearh, but they do fit right in sonically for Kill Em All. After Cliff died they got Jason and did the Garage Days EP. This caused quite a stir back in the day because the song choice was so original and they were so good. Helpless was another Diamond Head song. The Small Hours was a Holocaust song, taken from a live album because Holocaust never even recorded it during the life of the band. The Wait by Killing Joke shows their punk influence, and Crash Course In Brain Surgery was their first Budgie cover. Then there was a Misfits medley of Last Caress/Green Hell. Everyone in my high school knew Last Caress, even non-metal girls knew that song and sang it in the hallways. All these bands except Killing Joke had broken up by the time Metallica did these songs, and all reformed later due to the attention received. Just last night I got the 2022 remaster of Diamond Head’s first album and they write about how they now play some songs the way Metallica does them now.

@@homersimpson8414 completely agree. there are times when that's the case, e.g., I would argue that Disturb's sound of silence cover lends a completely different quality to the song. This one, I think, and much off Garage Inc., reflects that

Back in the cassette and vinyl days occasionally you'd buy a single song, you'd get the b-side track in the opposite side. Some of my favorite b sides from Metallica are 'so what' and 'killing time' - a queen cover. So what was apparently a cover from the anti-nowhere league.
@SantamanitaClauscaria2 жыл бұрын
Their Queen cover was Stone Cold Crazy. Great cover. Killing Time was originally performed by the band Sweet Savage, one of the NWOBHM bands along with Iron Maiden and Diamond Head, but never got nearly as famous. Their founding guitarist ended up playing in Dio and then Def Leppard.

Words and music by Brian Tattler and Sean Harris of Diamondhead. This is a pretty faithful cover. Check out the original. Metallicas original record label was Megaforce Records. After the Ride the Lightning tour they were signed by Electra Records. At that point Kill em All was reissued and added Am I Evil and Blitzkreig. Both songs part of their live set years before. Eventually those cover songs were moved off of Kill em All and released on Garage Inc in the late 90s.

The great thing about this song and that Metallica covered it and other songs from this band is that Diamond Head was probably going to be just another forgotten band in the history of metal. After the studio recordings, you should definitely watch versions of these songs from the legendary concerts in Seattle in 1989 and San Diego in 1992 immediately after. Very powerful show and powerful sound. Do not even watch concert versions of other years. Bad sound and bad vocals. It was in 1989 and 1992 that Hatfield had the maximum expressiveness and fury in his voice.

Just do a deep dive of the whole Garage Inc. album. It’s a cover album and not a single bad song on there. Most of them better than the original and gave popularity to the original tracks like Am I Evil for example. They Metallica-inized the songs so hard that if you didn’t know better you’d think they were originals 😅😂
@paulmayden73442 жыл бұрын
James didn't write the lyrics for this one. As you said this is a Diamond-Head song. And Metallica does a pretty faithful cover. Diamon-Head was a HUGE influence on them and their style. Really if it wasn't for them Metallica would be a MUCH different band. Diamond-Head were the masters of putting a billion different riffs and grooves into one song. Really the only real difference in this from the original is James is a much more Metal sounding singer. Diamond-Heads singer is much more glam rock sounding even though his band wasn't really a glam rock band.
