Not even close! The first heavy metal acts are considered to be Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, often referred to as the “unholy trinity”. Led Zeppelin released their self-titled debut in 1969, while Black Sabbath and Deep Purple put out influential records in 1970. Metal began to branch out into sub-genres, with glam and hair metal acts like Motley Crue and Poison spearheading the movement. Thrash metal became huge, with bands such as Metallica and Megadeth reaching ever larger audiences, thanks in part to metal acts being played on MTV, which started airing in 1981. Metallica owes it all to the iconic early metal innovators!

Your reactions are so good, you really get it, I can tell. I’m a Metallica fan since 1993 (age 13). When I discovered that stuff my head was exploiting, it was the first metal band I got really into as well since up to that point I was mostly into classic rock. I remember telling to myself “wow metal kicks ass” and yes it does but I didn’t realised that was not just some “good metal”. That stuff is beyond legendary. I literally can’t find the words to describe my emotions. 30 years passed and every time I hear these albums my heart breaks, every fucking time. How could I know that at the age of 13 I was listening stuff that will be considered as classical music in some years. Seeing you listening to that stuff for the first time and especially when I see you get it right away is priceless. Today I’m a musician myself and I listen to a lot of music from Jazz to Trip Hop to Electro to Black Metal to whatever the fuck else lol but the first 4 Metallica records are literally untouchable by anything or anyone. Fun fact: Although Master of Puppets is my favourite Metallica album as a whole, Fight Fire With Fire and Ride the Lightning are my fav Metallica songs! They’re just sick as fuck!

Yes, Cliff played on this, and there are a couple of songs that really highlight what an amazingly creative player he was. First, For Whom the Bell Tolls starts out with this crazy chromatic riff that he came up with, and James added the "dun dun, dun dun, duhhhhhh" power chords underneath it. It also has the instrumental, The Call of Ktulu, which has solos from Kirk, James, and Cliff (kind of like Orion on Master of Puppets, only this song has a very icy wizard type of feel to it).
@joshspunkrockgarden991410 ай бұрын
Also, when you get to Kill 'Em All, the song, Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth), is a Cliff Burton bass solo that is also one of the craziest "guitar" solos of the era, and it leads into Whiplash, which they had recorded with a different bass player on their No Life 'Til Leather demo without the solo before it.

This song and album was my introduction to Metallica in 1985, I was already into Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Dio, etc. but I had never heard anything this heavy, it blew me away. This solo is one of Kirk's best if not the best IMO. I remember hearing it back then and feeling like it really conveyed the sorrow of someone about to die, and the riff that kicks in before the solo starts is epic, really cool to see you catch that riff/solo and rewind.

If you want to know why cliff is so great check out Anesthesia pulling teeth , cliff'em all 1983 Chicago. This solo is the reason Metallica recruited him in 82. It took roughly 6 months for cliff to finally except, but the band had to do was move to San Francisco.
