A little fun fact, some of the lyrics from this song are actually from Audie Murphy's own poem and the title of the song is the title of Murphy's own book "Hell and Back". He directed his own WW2 movies and starred in them too. THE CROSSES GROW ON ANZIO Oh, gather 'round me, comrades; and listen while I speak Of a war, a war, a war where hell is six feet deep. Along the shore, the cannons roar. Oh how can a soldier sleep? The going's slow on Anzio. And hell is six feet deep. Praise be to God for this captured sod that rich with blood does seep. With yours and mine, like butchered swine's; and hell is six feet deep. That death awaits there's no debate; no triumph will we reap. The crosses grow on Anzio, where hell is six feet deep. Audie Murphy, 1948

The "folk-ish" style you mention is because they wrote it like music you hear in Old-West movies. This was because Audie Murphy acted in a number of spaghetti western movies during his film career. My favorite story of Murphy was when he, while wounded and out of ammo, jumped into a disabled tank's machine gun turret and held back advancing Germans for over an hour by himself. Keep in mind the tank was burning so he did this while choking down smoke. It's also said that moments after he climbed out and regrouped with reinforcements the tank's spare shells caught fire and exploded. If that ain't some action movie shit I dunno what is.

Yo Alex! Great reaction! For a little more perspective, the lyrics of the song, in many locations, are taken directly from his autobiography (which I have read and it is amazing!) and the footage you saw was from the movie in which he portrayed himself. This happened because the actor originally cast could not get it right and since Audie was serving as a technical advisor, he was convinced to take the part. The section "bright, a white light, if there be any glory in war" is actually his dedication in the front of the book to two of his fallen comrades which the band used as tribute to him. I highly suggest reading the book. The movie could be too dated as it was released in the 50's. To further show who he was, his sister signed a document to get him into the military at 17 after his mother's death and he was soon off to war. All those medals were awarded before he turned 21 years of age. This song makes me think--what was I doing at 21? Thanks for doing this one. These reactions are great!

More brilliance from Sabaton! I love their music but their lyrics are so so good. That conflict you mention makes them the speedball of music... great tensions and dynamics.

Sabaton is coming to an North America tour in October, if you want to catch them live, they are, according to me, one of the best band live!
