Kind of random how this was recommended to me but the shift started when rappers started focusing on one liners here and there with a good hook on a sick beat ... That quickly changed to a good hook on a great beat... Which transitioned to a good beat. As a big fan of hyperpop and industrial hip-hop I think that you're spot on thinking that the people creating the sounds are dope but the copycats kinda ruin it. Message doesn’t matter because our society doesn’t value much of anything apart from immediate gratification and elevated pleasure. Music is a reflection of the culture at large. Intentionality and depth of meaning are no longer honored, thus the extremes of the opposite are. The message is a part of the emotional connection a listener experiences and most listeners use rap music as an escape from their actual reality in exchange for exaggerated hedonism. It is blissfully ignorant to say there are not degrees of maturity within art. And the best art that has stood across time was deeply meaningful… because it had to be to have such an impact. At the end of the day, it depends on your perspective and the scale at which you are comparing to. (BTW; This only applies to music consumers not casual listeners.)

What people don’t understand is that the vocals we hear in modern rap r not 100% computer manipulated. It takes a lot of work and talent to manipulate vocals WHILE recording. The problem with the newer acts and the voice effects, is the all of the bad ones. The ppl who still sound bad, lack breath control, etc. At least when older artist did those things they still added a bit of their own to make it great (tpain could sing regardless, rapper's "funny" slang/voice was mostly due to cultural differences ie snoop and them sounded like cali guys vs run dmc for example). These new artist have nothing that seperates them/makes them unique besides class fr because sadly internet culture has ripped off and watered down everything. So even once you get past/over the voice effects, theyre still just talking about the same stuff as the next person compared to older music and the stories they told.

the real talent, the real want to put in effort to put something thought provoking out, has died. It's unfortunate, i just make music for myself now and i feel a lot more fulfilled. What people fail to realize is hiphop and rap in itself was a form of music that was created by black people as a sociopolitical movement. So the serious topics, the skill to flip words around and use metaphors and similes was the goal and it was the peak of talent in the culture, it also pissed the government off, which i love, because people that weren't of our environment got educated on what was really going on. They DO need to have a message in their raps, but hey, i enjoy new age rap, if young black guys can still provide for their family, cool bro. Hiphop Generationally changes! The 70s was about MC'ing and vinyl chops, which sounds nothing like the 80s which was more about production and catchiness. 90's Rap got more interpersonal and aimed for real life matters but it got shunned cause story's were different. For example people hated Andre 3000 cause he made "Different sounding music" now he's is hip hop. I just think when the unexpected happens that it is more provoking and interesting. I don't think its cause they're not making sense, it's that communication style changes. An example would be trends. This new Generation is ACTIVE IRL meaning twitch streamers are the new rappers. Rap music is built for a generation to feel apart of and if you don't understand then you're not in the "circle of awareness". This means trends reflects lifestyles! In other words you're old and your not the focal point anymore! Growing up my rappers were Lil Wayne, Gucci mane, Early odd future with the wild music videos, ROCKY integrating Soundcloud producers who had a new electronic take on hip hop and Kanye in his PRIME. Basically we were all online and slowly integrating themes into our social lives and these artist facilitated towards our movements. I remember being young and seeing how Soulja boy made the superman go viral or seeing my older cousins freak out if the Jabbawockees were in a music video and the films step up and stomp the yard were major. Socially music felt important, like you either with it or you had no idea about it but it's not as important as it is today. Now hip hop is reality tv with so many characters. Everyone wants to be the main character instead of playing a role in sound but you need Characters to explain a story! Now we're just watching everyone introduce and explain character arcs and lores. I think thats so cool it makes the music a lot more fun to be apart of although thats also whats cheapening it! It just made hip hop Jarring cause how many times do we have to listen to someone re-invent the wheel but people like Yatchy make it interesting cause he's important but he's doing his own thing completely, In the world of newer artist, for example Yeat created a language that adults don't understand but trust me when I say his target audience fully gets it, are well aware of where he is coming from and feel apart of his arch! It's all digital tribes and who's at the centre of it! It's dope to see this Generation do their thing!
