No bath or pool for 6 weeks post surgery!!! I'm a pool person...swim and exercise daily before surgery, but struggling after 14 days with horrible swelling and bruising in my operative leg. They pain is unbearable.

How can water exercise be done at 3 WEEKS? I’m three weeks past surgery and my wound is only partially healed. My surgeon said definitely no pool before SIX weeks. I thing this is very misleading!

Interesting for me since I had both hips replaced 6+ years ago. Went into the doctor and asked if I could do them both at the same time. He asked if I was doing the exercises in the book they gave me. No. NO????? I do swim about 5 miles a week ( only 5 then, 12 to 15 now...) and I have been doing Tai Chi for years. Oh, you are a perfect candidate... I was surprised that they didn't tell people to get into the pool for getting ready and for recovery. I was back in the pool at about 4 weeks (would have been in at 3 weeks, but had a reaction to the adhesives on the bandages), and walking miles before getting back in the pool. I would cool down after my laps by walking in water about mid chest high, walk forward, backward and that side step she does here. Went in 2 years later to have a knee replaced. Back in the pool in 3 weeks. In preparation for getting the knee done, I picked up the side stroke since the flutter kick bothered my knee. The scissor kick works both the ham strings, and the quads, and of course, you have to swim on both sides. Back in the pool at 3 weeks with that one. The poor doctors, nurses, physician assistants, and therapy were not ready for some one who was physically and mentally prepared for the surgeries. I went to maybe half of the therapy sessions, mostly because they knew I would put in the work outside the clinic. First week post surgery was the most difficult, mostly because I couldn't sleep for more than about 1 1/2 hours because I couldn't roll over and sleep on my side.... Biggest adjustment after the surgery for the hips was getting used to standing upright again. Took a year or so to get the hip flexors straightened out again..... Turned the 'life guard' side stroke into the old over arm side stroke, which, unfortunately was dropped from competition in 1900 in favor of the much slower breast stroke. Oh, after the knee, they told me not to swim breast stroke, which I never could figure out anyway.... That kick.....

I had my right hip replaced and need to have my left hip replaced on. Currently, 2 months after the first surgery, I cannot start walking after riding from sitting for a short while. My legs have a hard time getting going. It’s as if my mind cannot force my legs to move. But after I walk a few steps, then it becomes easier. What causes this?

I am 11 days post-surgery. I am 15 ears older than Shelley, and I think that makes a bit of a difference. I am slender and was very active before surgery. There is no way I could walk that far in another week and a half. I think she is exceptional.

Does the incision need to be fully waterproof for the pool? I’m being told not to swim for first 12 weeks to avoid infection.

I took the stitches out after 2 weeks and Was told the scar was fine. I was in the therapy pool straight away. Swimming is one of the few exercises you can do before 12 weeks as long as you don’t do breaststroke

They were most concerned that the wound was totally healed before getting back in the pool. They have come a long way with bandages, and there may be 'water proof' bandages now. For me, peeling an old bandage off and putting a new one back on every day would have been a problem. Hard on the skin. If it didn't stick on properly, it wouldn't be water proof. Ask your doctor. As for breast stroke, I don't know, never could do that one. After getting the knee replaced, they told me not to try breast stroke....
