Very good information and well explained! For some of the other viewers who are interested in roof construction in different countries or who may even travel to work in other places. On the point where the crown rafter meets the end pair of common rafters, in good practice, we would face this pair of rafters up with a triangular "saddle board" a type of gusset board for the hip rafters to rest firmly rest against to ensure that they obtain full bearing because the hips can sometimes have a plumb cut about 1/3 longer than the common rafter plumb cuts. The crown rafter in between is also built down with a triangular block of the same rafter thickness and this enables a longer plumb cut on the crown rafter similar in length to the plumb cut of the hips. Therefore we adjust the position of this end pair of rafters to allow for the thickness of the saddle board and the hip rafter length calculations still meet at the center of the roof on the plan. Where the hip rafter meets the wallplate it is standard practice for us in Ireland and the UK to notch the hip rafter over a corner tie, or dragon tie, a very secure tried and tested method.

A future DIY project Im thinking of doing is a (3.7 x 4.3) 4 post hip metal sheeted roof 'gazebo' with exposed structure (no ceiling lining) without underpurlins, However will add collar ties to the commons only. Is this possible as your model indicates underpurlins
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Aniton Yes that is fine as the rafters wont be supported. You will just have to make sure that you are using rafters that are big enough to span the distance without the need for the purlilns.

Hi thanks for that video.question. Why are pearlings needed the roof will support itself without them (between installing the main roof and installing the pearlings)?
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mate, the Purlins are there to support the rafters. The Purlins are supproted on struts that transfer the loads down to the walls. If you remove the Purlins the rafters will have to be bigger to carry the load. Hope this helps

Hi Mate, thanks for your comment. That's a pretty specific request and to be honest not something that I would be looking to do in the near future. The erection process would be the same it would be the layout of the roof that would be different. This series of videos may help with that. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6e2pnegeZeNqdE

hi is it possible to remove the joists between the 2 beams? This would allow for a high central ceiling area.
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, you really dont need the ceiling joists at all if you dont want them, you could run your ceiling lining up the rake of the rafter until you get to the collar ties, or you could also beef up your rafters and do away with the collar ties as well and just have a raked (sloped) ceiling. Hope this helps

The position for the last pair of common rafters is half the span minus half the thickness of the ridge, you forgot to mention that!
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed, i did mention that the 1/2 span was to the centreline of the rafter, which was all the detail i wanted in this video as it was just ment as an overview. Just another small point, to get the edge of the rafter you would have to deduct or add half the rafter thickness, not the ridge thickness. Thanks for keeping me on my toes anyway.

@edthompson9337
@edthompson9337 4 жыл бұрын
Further to my earlier post and your reply, none of the common rafters come to the centre of the span, the centre of the ridge sits at that point so therefore you would half to take half the thickness of the ridge away when calculating where the last pair of common rafters sit.
@edthompson9337
@edthompson9337 4 жыл бұрын
It's the same when you are working out the length of the common rafter, half the span minus half the thickness of the ridge, as the plumb cut of the rafter doesn't sit in the centre of the span!
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed, yes i agree, none of the rafters actually meet at the centre of the ridge and in order to calculate the length of the rafter you have to deduct half the thickness of the ridge however this doesnt apply when setting out the position of the centring rafters. The centre of all the members have to align with the centrelines of the roof.
