I was having a beautiful day in Beacon when I suddenly heard some gibberish that sounded something like "Hodee do'!" and "conebread!", and I turned around and saw several Negroes loafing on the corner, whereupon I promptly left Beacon. Will not be returning.

I am from Nelsonville, right next to Cold Spring and south of Beacon. Most of my father's family is from or lived there over the years. It was more of a home away from home for me. The folk singer Pete Seegar lived in Beacon for many years. Pete and Don McLean were friends and co-perfomers. They worked the Hudson River Restoration and the sailing ship - The Clearwater.

Your enthusiasm about climbing that hill (or mountain?) was infectious! Beautiful view indeed. There are so many gorgeous places in this world but there is something magical about Hudson Valley. I hope to head to Beacon soon!

Raised there, remember the town when it was on the skids. Important bit of town evolution is opening of interstate highway bridge and closing of ferry service I think in 1963, along with development of route nine sprawl from Fishkill to Poughkeepsie sucked whatever economic life blood was left after the factories started closing down.

can we drive to the top of BEACON HILL ?

i lived their for a few years back in 2007 to 2009, beacon wappingers falls and fishkill, great little towns across the hudson from Newburg. And though Newburg was said to be one of the nations worse crime ridden towns, i have to say i didnt see anything of the sort, though i was living across the hudson in wappinger falls. It was simply one of those towns that long fell into poverty after white flight and the areas major founding industries had long ended. but in my years there i did see the beginning of growth and the influx of startups and that revival. The area didnt have much in terms of good jobs, but there was a good bit of retail, the Gap east coast distribution facility and IBM. Also some great universities on the way up towards Poughkeepsie such as CIA culinary institute of america. A beautiful location for certain. with even more beautiful small outlining towns all just a short drive away. Beacon is one of those town that also was moderately poor, but also a wealth in historical realestate. Like cold springs you knew this was yet another hidden gem that eventually people would find out about, as there are plenty of colonial mansions. and awesome homes. The bad part is the fact it will push out the locals which is not cool at all. Both the town of Beacon Fishkill and Wappingers falls all seeing tremendous growth, and though the commute to NYC is long, its really no longer than say going out to those further location of long island. great to see this video.. i do miss living there.

Love your videos. How would you compare Beacon to Cold Spring?
@DestinationMan2 жыл бұрын
They're very similar. Beacon is much bigger so there's more stuff to do there. But Cold Spring feels less touristy with fewer crowds. You can't go wrong visiting either one...it's only 12 minutes by train or car between them so why not do both! :)

@@DestinationMan You need to visit Hudson, NY further up the river and it will change your view of the Hudson Valley forever. Reachable only by Amtrak if traveling by train.

Yeah the weather will still be nice. And an added bonus is that it would be peak foliage season.

No offense to anyone, I think Beacon is the most overrated Hudson River town. I was not impressed when I visited.
