Yay! Fiona is becoming quite a beautiful hippo, isn't she. She appears to still very friendly with her keepers, too. Go, Fiona! Yeah, we really do need more frequent updates on her, please!

We just got back from your absolutely beautiful Zoo. We drove 7.5 hours to visit Fiaona. It was our 25 th anniversary present to visit the zoo and meet her. We loved it and thanks for the continued love for these beautiful animals and flowers.

I’ve used the same training on my family’s 15 year old Shih-Tzu except Oreo gets insulin injections twice a day. I volunteer at the St. Louis Zoo which is where I learned about the training. After my parents taught me how to give the injections, I poked Oreo on the scruff of the neck a couple times with the needle while the cap was still on to get him used to where I would be injecting him. He is pretty skittish when my parents do it, but he stays pretty calm when I do it since I got him used to it.

Hippos are actually one of the deadliest animals in the wild. You gotta be awfully brave to goose one with a needle, even if they are trained!
@hiko735 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure they are aware of that, thanks :)
@Powerranger-le4up5 жыл бұрын
You should look into a video of a lioness at the Topeka Zoo. She is completely calm as they draw blood from her tail. It does hurt a little, but she knows what’s going to happen and stays still. She knows that she gets extra treats when she participates.

How's Fiona's father Henry?
@KateriEcho5 жыл бұрын
Henry passed away in 2017, sadly. He got sick and went off his feed, the staff worked very hard to treat his symptoms and find the cause of his illness and Henry fought for a couple months but in the end he had lost a lot of weight and just couldn't recover. I am not affiliated with the Zoo, this is info I learned reading up on the Cincinnati Hippo family online.

Why do hippos have tails? Doesn't seem to help with balance or flies. Hippo tails are really interesting, I've never had a close look like this before.

There are two possibilities to prepare hippo tail: The Texanien and the Austrian way. For the first one give the tail a good rub with a juicy souce and babecue it for serveral hours till the tail is soft and tender. Yummy! For the Austrian variant of hipp tail prepare a brooth of vegetables and bones and simmer the hippo tail for several hours at low temperature till the tail is soft and tender. Yummy! The Austrians would serve smashed potatos, thin slices of horseradish (horse...) and apple souce to it! Enjoy!
