I need to try Uni....live in Oregon and a LOT of ours get harvested and shipped around the world. Not too hard to get from what I understand, just go down on a minus tide and poke around the deeper tide pools and rock. Not sure I'll like it, but worth a try once at least!

Hiro, read the Bushido Shoshinshu. Great book. Read it in English 20 years ago, and it's what the author said was closest to the "spirit" of the Japanese! A lot of great stories in that book. Uni is such a unique flavor bomb of salty, sweet, and umami. It’s like the cream butter of the sea that instantly melts on your tongue. Some can be earthy, nutty, or sweet depending on freshness and age.

I would sometimes, if I didn't feel like running out to get some salmon or tuna, I would just make myself some rice maki with a little soy running down the middle or maybe with some carrot and cucumber and tofu if I had some. Technically it's the genitals... if you look closely, there are hundreds of tiny eggs. Lower life form genitalia though isn't really gross. I don't stand for eating the genitals of higher life forms, like bull's penis... if you've eaten a hot dog before, there's a good chance you've had animal genitals.
