I couldn't imagine going through the loss of an impactful sensei. But my sensei told all his students (and I obviously). That if he ever dies, that he just wants us to carry the flag of Jiu-Jitsu and pass it forward for legacy. You can't stop training, but taking a break would be understandable.

This made me spooked and I texted my first coach who I haven’t talked to in a long time.

I cried when you mentioned your mother, because i do something like this for my own mother, who passed away recently. She collected some herbs(mint) before she died and sometimes whenever i eat something i put some of it on my food. I hope this good deed reaches her on the other side. I hope all of them are in heaven brother. thanks for your video

I went through this with my Kyokushin Sensei (BJJ and Kyokushin are the martial arts that really stuck with me), I felt that by training at the dojo I was there for his son who was also a sensei, I actually had the thought of no matter how bad I'm feeling it has to be 100x worst for him. I actually felt I was helping his son by coming to class because it was showing him that "we're with you". Also the one's I like are the 24 hour charity rolls in memory of the person, with the money going to a local charity etc.

been following you for the last 8 years man and honestly just hope you know how impactful your videos and thoughts have been in my BJJ journey. this video is just one of so so many of yours that just screams vulnerable honesty while at the same time showing you how to overcome loss etc... One of the realist channels out there, please keep doing what you're doing Chewy!

I'm very sorry for the school's loss. May the mentor rest in peace. Wonderful words of wisdom straight from Chewy's heart and own experience. It really is the grieving process, and I love the suggestion to honor the mentor. This reminds me of when Leandro Lo passed away, and how great the pain the world of jiu jitsu felt.

Hard moments. I remember this instructor, charismatic. he had a big school, big impact in his students lives. BJJ black belt under Royler Gracie, living in the french eastern part of Canada. When he left, God blesses his soul, his shutdown. His brother, also a multiple stripe black belt, didnt want to take over the school, his grief was so heavy, he even moved out of the province. Then, the good things came up, cause his best upperbelt students, some of em, opened up academies which are still open till this day. I belong to one of em, the student that instructor trained make some of the best instructors I've had the opportunity to trained with.

Sorry for his passing. Never easy when a coach, mentor or impactful boss dies. I don't think he would want people to be sad about his passing , train in his memory.

I know how he feels. Lost my Professor Keith Owens a few years ago. I put off training for awhile, now my daughter is training again and Im going back soon too.

I lost my coach in the middle of me finishing my bachelor degree which I always talked to him about. He was my first black belt Ralphy Sembex, and one thing I learned is how to move forward after he passed on. I hear a lot that I roll like him and I take that to heart. Keep morning bro

Sorry for his loss and the entire dojo’s loss. I think you gave some solid advice Chewy. I think the tribute idea is awesome. I pray, therefore I’ll offer my prayers for them. 🙏
