"Candle In The Wind" was written by Elton John & Bernie Taupin in 1973 in honour of Marilyn Monroe. Elton later used the same melody but changed the lyrics to pay tribute to Princess Diana in 1997. It was changed to "Goodbye England's Rose".

Yep, rewritten for Princess Diana's funeral, "Goodbye England's Rose." I had to wonder if you picked this out for Queen Elizabeth's passing. I remember watching Sir Elton perform this for Princess Diana back in 1997, without a dry eye in the house, and wondering how in the world he kept it together when he sang it. LIVE. In front of everyone not only in that church, but globally on TV to literally the entire world. I'm wondering if this will be a part of QEII's funeral next week. All that said, I still prefer the "Norma Jean" version you've reacted to here.

Her actual real name was Norma Jeane Mortenson (that's Jeane with an extra E). Her parents were separated when she was conceived, but her mother still used her 2nd husband's surname on Marilyn's birth certificate. Her real father is believed to be Charles Stanley Gifford, the foreman where her mother worked. Norma Jeane later adopted the surname Baker from her mother's first husband, .

I felt the same way. I did a paper on her in school so I did a lot of research about her. Mind you, I was in high school in the mid-late 90s, so the research was done at the city library because we didn't have the internet then. But I do remember seeing newspaper articles about the fact she was found in the nude. I kept thinking, why does that matter? She's in her room, on her bed, in her own house. I'm 15 years old trying to figure out what is going on. I mean, in my opinion, the fact that passed away seemed a bit more relevant but, yeah. It's just rude is what it is. Just rude and unnecessary. She went through so much in her life, she struggled and fought for her life and career, only to be reduced down to being found dead and naked. "She is worth a hell of a lot more than that."

@@txheadshots I agree. 100%. She really was treated like she was disposable. I wish she would have been able to hear this song though. However, if you want a hype song for next Sunday, react to "Yours Is No Disgrace," by Yes. n the Eagle Vision documentary on the making of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Taupin said the song is about "the idea of fame or youth or somebody being cut short in the prime of their life. The song could have been about James Dean, it could have been about Montgomery Clift, it could have been about Jim Morrison ... how we glamorise death, how we immortalise people." According to Taupin, the song is more of a take on fame and celebrity than an ode to Monroe: “I think the biggest misconception about [this song] is that I was this rabid Marilyn Monroe fanatic, which really couldn't be further from the truth. It's not that I didn't have respect for her. It's just that the song could just as easily have been about James Dean or Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain Sylvia Plath, Virginia Woolf. I mean, basically, anybody, any writer, actor, actress, or musician who died young and sort of became this iconic picture of Dorian Gray, that thing where they simply stopped aging. It's a beauty frozen in time". In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2014, Taupin disputed the implication that he was a Monroe fan: "She is absolutely not someone I admired a lot as a kid or anything. She was just a metaphor for fame and dying young, and people sort of overdoing the indulgence, and those that do die young she just". On the song itself, he stated: "I think it's one of the best marriages of lyric and melody that Elton and I have ever put together. But it doesn’t change the fact that I wasn’t particularly enamored by Marilyn Monroe". The single release of the original song reached No. 11 in the UK charts in 1974. At the time, it was not released as a single in the United States as "Bennie and the Jets" was chosen instead.

Goodbye, Norma Jeane Though I never knew you at all You had the grace to hold yourself While those around you crawled They crawled out of the woodwork And they whispered into your brain They set you on the treadmill And they made you change your name And it seems to me you lived your life Like a candle in the wind Never knowing who to cling to When the rain set in And I would've liked to know you But I was just a kid Your candle burned out long before Your legend ever did Loneliness was tough The toughest role you ever played Hollywood created a superstar And pain was the price you paid Even when you died Oh, the press still hounded you All the papers had to say Was that Marilyn was found in the nude And it seems to me you lived your life Like a candle in the wind Never knowing who to cling to When the rain set in And I would've liked to know you But I was just a kid Your candle burned out long before Your legend ever did Goodbye, Norma Jeane Though I never knew you at all You had the grace to hold yourself While those around you crawled Goodbye, Norma Jeane From the young man in the twenty second row Who sees you as something more than sexual More than just our Marilyn Monroe And it seems to me you lived your life Like a candle in the wind Never knowing who to cling to When the rain set in And I would've liked to know you But I was just a kid Your candle burned out long before Your legend ever did Your candle burned out long before Your legend ever did

If you love story telling you should check out Elton John's Ticking. It's a long song and a deep cut, but it's story is still sooooo relevant today. And as a bonus it's mostly just Elton John and his Piano...

Elton John is truly the the Greatest of all time. I don’t know how many times that I have heard this song but man it just sent chills all over my body. When I was a teenager in the middle seventies I would sit out in my car and listen to Elton on my 8 track player in my 1967 Chevy 2 I really miss those days. The seventies had by far the Greatest music 🎶 ever.

"Candle In the Wind" (Goodbye Norma Jean)" is a tribute to Marilyn Monroe who's real name was Norma Jean, written in early 70s and at least a decade after her death , by Elton John & his long time writing partner B. Taupin. Despite of how the world seen her as very beautiful and glamorous and someone that had everything, she lived a troubled and lonely life despite all of her relationships & the ppl surrounding her, her success came at a price. She had a very hard childhood then once she made it in Hollywood, like so many others, she was forced and controlled by the industry to become someone she wasn't and to do some things maybe she wouldn't have done other wise, changed her entire identity and appearance, having to pretend to be "dumb" although she was intelligent and she was looked at as a as a sex object and not really taken seriously, she then fell into addiction which is what is supposed to have been the cause of her demise at the age of 36. Altho Elton John says in the song he was too young to have been able to have had the chance to know her, it's clear that this song comes from a place of empathy and IMO he can relate to the treatment and life of a highly famous celebrity through his own experiences and perhaps also to things in his own personal life and childhood. This song humanizes Marilyn and honors her in spite of the publics negative views and disrespectful comments and reports about her at the time of her death. It's very heartfelt and sensitive to Marilyn Monroe the woman aka Norma Jean. Also in 1997, soon after the tragic accident in Paris that took the life of Princess Diana, Elton John revised, re-recorded, and released another version of this song, "Candle in the Wind (Goodbye England's Rose)", in tribute and memory of her, which he did know in real life and admired and respected with most of the world...her death was felt and mourned globally, she too also lead a lonely life and also left the world too young too soon.

This song is so profound. It really makes me cry when I just sit and listen to it. In relation to Marilyn Monroe, and then later when he wrote the version for Princess Diana when she was taken so soon. Excellent reaction from you both, as always. You can never go wrong with Elton John. He is a musical genius.

Amber nailed it. Elton John's major strength is musical arrangement. That's why Bernie, the songwriter, partnered with him. Now, as far as piano playing, there was one before Elton who had meteoric acclaim. He went by Liberace, and I believe even Elton would defer to him as the better player.
@catz4m8z2 жыл бұрын
Credit to Bernie Taupin too. Elton is def a genius with his arrangements and skill on the piano but Bernie could knock out some pretty amazing lyrics too! Just a fantastic team.

The arrangement is credit to Del Newman. He replaced the incomparable Paul Buckmaster who had done Elton's arrangements previously, and is the arranger on songs like Drops of Jupiter by Train. Del Newman did a stellar job on the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. Check out the song, I've Seen that Movie Too for an amazing string arrangement which marries in an utterly spellbinding way with the guitar arrangement.

I would also suggest (and have done so) Neil Sedaka as a piano-playing singer-songwriter in the Elton mode as someone they would like. The later Sedaka, I mean. I think Elton saw this in Neil when he resurrected his career.

I saw Sir Elton in concert perhaps 20 years ago. It was a great show, just him and a piano, no big stage show. And at one point he played one of his piano compositions. No lyrics, just the music. And I realized I was sitting in a stadium watching the Beethoven of our era. He's really that good.

Norma Jean was Marilyn Monroe's real name. He changed the lyrics for Princess 👸 Diana when she passed. He was good friend of hers. They asked him to sing it at her funeral service

Marilyn Monroe's real name was Norma Jean Mortensen. Thus the change her name line in the song. They made her use a stage name more fitting to sell her sex appeal.

There is a performance of this song from Australia that is absolutely gorgeous. Sort of the iconic version of this song. I suspect the reason people have been requesting this one lately is because of Queen Elizabeth's death. The last time Sir Elton performed this song was at Princess Diana's funeral. It was her favorite of his songs (they knew each other well because they both supported AIDS charities) and he wrote specialized lyrics for her. Have you reacted to "Levon" yet? It's probably my favorite Elton John song. Deeply emotional, with an undercurrent of anger that is very interesting.
