Ben found farming like many 1st generation farmers, he wanted to contribute to something different than the standard food system. After building a working farm, he started to hit a few bumps in the roads and soon hit rock bottom with one decision to make: “I have to either run this like a business or like a homestead, but only one will pay me”. He decided to run it like a business and has never looked back. From adding imperative infrastructure to scheduling time away from the farm off season. Ben has maximized his farm scale for success.

That was absolutely riveting ! He makes so many good points, some of which I have had myself....like bringing in inputs at the sacrifice of other land. A concept that is mirrored throughout society - we cause the degrade of other areas of the world to make our corner look great. The break part is very important but I think what resonated with me the most was when he was talking about the bad advice he, and many homesteaders, are getting in the romantic notion that is being portrayed. It is hard work, extremely hard work and unless you track things, you won't make a business out of it. And so right about breed selection! So glad you interviewed Ben. His advice is spot on! Love his processing plant setup! Thanks Ben! And thank you for a great interview!

It's very interesting how ppls lives develop over time, yet we use our same skills. "Systems" does naturally develop from something like an organization right to farming (Joel Salitin). Smart guy.

Hello you mentioned Indiana. I’m in Texas now but originally from northwest Indiana. What part of Indiana did you live in. We actually had 80 in Roann Indiana and in my late 20s we moved there and farmed there. We had chickens, cows, and pigs. We raised our own grain, hay and silage to feed our animals. We did this until my mid 30s we sold that property and moved back to northwest Indiana and bought 10 acres and scaled back our operation we still had pigs cows and chickens to feed our family and sold halves and holes of pigs and cows. We are now doing this in Texas.
