I initially bought the U8N, but I was unimpressed with its black level performance. The hardware is there, but the processing is too weak to fully take advantage of it. As a result, the U8N suffers from severe fluctuating letterbox bars. Sometimes they are inky black, while other times they look like what you would expect on a $300 LCD TV. Truly terrible performance in that regard, which makes the TV unwatchable for me in a dark room. Then I moved to the QM851, which I liked better. It had better motion handling, slightly less impressive color production, but improved black level performance with one caveat-the letterbox bars still fluctuated, though to a much lesser degree. This is simply unacceptable to me on a TV with so many dimming zones, so back it went. On a whim, I decided to try the Samsung QN85D with very low expectations because it has significantly fewer dimming zones than both of these models. However, to my surprise, it absolutely destroys both the Hisense and TCL when it comes to overall black level performance, shadow detail, and letterbox bar performance. The letterbox bars are inky black and do not fluctuate; you can watch it in a completely dark room without distraction. The shadow detail is the best I've ever seen on a mini LED, and the color production is outstanding. The peak brightness capabilities fall behind the Hisense and TCL, but nonetheless, it's still brighter than you're ever going to really need. I used to own a Samsung Q8FN, and I was always impressed with its black level performance despite very few local dimming zones. Samsung seems to use an extremely solid algorithm on their TVs that feature panels with excellent native contrast ratios and fewer dimming zones. The QN85D is virtually the only Samsung TV in the past six years that uses a panel with an excellent native contrast ratio and fewer dimming zones, rather than a poor native contrast ratio with a high zone count. Native contrast ratio is so important even on a panel with substantial local dimming zones, and I don't know why Samsung moved away from this-except for this TV and this TV only in the past six years. Anyway, it's a great TV, and everyone is sleeping on it! I think it's the best mid-range mini LED on the market right now.

This is by far the best comparison between these two TVs. I really like that you showed old content since many of us still like watching older shoeless from time to time. I prefer the higher contrast with the TCL. I just really hate the TCL remote.

Great video! Quick follow up to your reply on Steve’s video regarding SDR vs HDR settings across these TVs. Does the Hisense U7N allow for dedicated calibration adjustments in SDR vs HDR picture modes within one input? Meaning if my source is always HDMI 1, and it switches between SDR and HDR depending on content, does the Hisense allow for me to dial in SDR settings that do NOT carry over to HDR? And visa versa? Learning the TCLs SDR settings in SDR Movie picture mode carry across to HDR10 movie picture mode if on the same input. Dolby vision seems isolated and separate on tcl. If the Hisense U7N allows for better control of the settings in my case I may let my friend know to swap out the tcl for the Hisense. Thanks so much!

The real question is, which of the TCL and Hisense tvs will last the longest? The Sony most expensive likely less issues and will last tne longest but quite expensive.
@stopthefomo2 ай бұрын
It's been consistently demonstrated that TV durability is directly related to (1) price and (2) panel technology type. Edge Lit is the worst regardless of price point. Among miniLED LCD TVs, generally paying $1000 or more gets you better durability. So a cheap Sony under $800 is no better than a similarly priced TCL QM7. This has been the conclusion of Consumer Reports. HOWEVER, this is different than customer support attentiveness which Sony is pretty good at.

hey FOMO, I have a question that only you might know the answer to. I bought a Sony Bravia 9 (yes the $3k B9), and I was trying to change the picture settings for Twitch (android tv app). It turns out absolutely none of the picture settings apply to this app for some reason. For instance, If I lower the color range all the way down to 0, the picture is still in full color. Also it looks like the Twitch content is not being upscaled at all by the Bravia, so if the stream is running at 720p60fps, it looks pretty bad. Should I contact Sony support to ask them why Twitch is preventing all picture settings from being used from the TV? Right now I'm using my ShieldTV to run Twitch, outputting the hdmi signal to 1080p and using the Bravia to upscale it to 4k. Looks much better than the internal Twitch app at least but this is not a long term solution. Thank you

But I can’t yet figure out specific value for motion settings to get rid of artifacts or judder while watching 24fps content. This is killing me. I use Apple tv 4k, so I mostly watch contents in Dolby vision 4k60 output. I see three options for dolby vision (IQ/Bright/Dark) but I see judder when watching let’s say Hobbit movies in HboMax or 24fps youtube videos. If I set motion settings then i notice artifacts. I had zero motion issues in my previous Vizio M507. Any suggestions on setting up the motion options when you use Dolby Vision output from Apple tv 4k60.
