to be fair, in the books i think it's explained that to reject this offer would give the emperor the excuse he needs to erase house atreides, so it's a bit of a dead-if-you-do dead-if-you-don't situation. dunno if that's brought up in the film

The third option was exile, but Leto was a proud man and thought that on Arrakis he would at least have a fighting chance if he can make an alliance with the Fremen. He underestimated how much money the Baron was willing to blow on this vendetta.

@@Akm72 It is a bit more complicated than that but sure. To give you the jist of it, the Emperor has power in the landsraad, because of his elite troops, the Sardukar. But Thufir Hawat, with the help of Gurney figures out two things. 1: The sardukar are trained on the Emperors prison planet, and they're though, because of the hostile nature of the planet. 2: Arrakis is even more hostile, therefore the fremen must be tougher than even the sardukar. Leto, is already more popular in the Landsraad, than the emperor, and if he could ally with the fremen he would have stronger troops too. Then he would only need to marry the emperors daughter, princess Irulan and he could ascend the throne that way. This is why he never married Jessica. It almost worked. If they hadn't been betrayed it would have worked

I'm just starting the books, please don't specify if it's different 😅 But in the movie I just thought that betrayal was literally going to be for nothing, why they would do that expecting that the other party would uphold their end; it was so many lives traded for 1 where really it was obvious it would not even be for 1. It was a weak story point.
